Cnbc had a feature on skoda fabia yesterday, and said that skoda fabia sedan with 80 bhp engines in petrol and diesel variants would be launched by skoda india shortly in a price range of 7-8 lakhs.[That car reminded me so much of the opel corsa].

The fabia hatchback will also be launched in such a way so as to take advantage of the excise duty cut for small cars, not much details about that though.

The News think is true. This is very well described in the October edition of Overdrive as Skoda's 2007 line up of cars for the asian market.

before launching the fabia skoda would better upgrade their service network and
reduce the service costs, otherwise a volume car like Fabia will not be a great success no matter how good it is.

May be in the beginning Yes, but soon people would become aware of Skoda's high maintenance cost. And in this price bracket, news/romours spread so fast and people are extra sensitive to cost/epxenses.

Any way I desperately hope that fabia's front lights are different from Octavia/Laura/Superb. Else shame on you Skoda

manas, the skoda laura is already available with the DSG transmission. it also features a pump dusse diesel engine.

i dont think the fabia will be introduced anytime soon, going by the autocar drive it seems to be lacking in interior space compared to fiesta, city and verna. also it will be priced higher than these. they wont be able to match the price.

this might have deterred them from bringing the car.

Well the Swift isnt a unique design. Its a copy of the BMW Mini Cooper. So why blame Skoda and Hyundai? Every car will have resemblances.

If fabia is launched in Indian market, it will be tuned to be some where near 100BHP (CNBC SPEED autoshow) to take on the fiestas and the city.. Now thats some thing good from a 1.4l car!! Fabia diesel would be a big hit.

a) Skoda has been huffing and puffing to service their Octy-Superb customers. A car like the Fabia would require them to service atleast twice that number of customers. Skoda must beef up theri service

b) Skoda's Octavia sold primarily as a Diesel. the 2.0 pretol and even the 1.8Tpi (Rider/RS) sold in very limited numbers. If I were Skoda I'd only release the Diesel and a 1.8Tpi versions - the Diesel to extend the brand image created by the Diesel Octy and the 1.8Tpi for the enthusiasts. Skoda will never sell as much as Honda or Toyota. If they do they'd trip over themsleves in servicing their customer base. Diesel/1.8Tpi

c) A midsizsed Diesel has a limited market esp since there are alternates (Fiesta and Verna) in the same segment. If the market can accomodate 3 players, Skoda's Fabia may survive here since neither Honda and Toyota have a mid sized diesel out yet. Is some ways this works in Skoda'a favour as they wont be able to serivce a larger market anyway Limited market size.

My belief is that like Ford, Chevy, and to a lesser extent GM (read as Chevy) Skoda will be a niche player (Diesel and Enthusiansts only) in the C-D segments. Neither of these can match the numbers Honda and Toyota sell and service (ok Toyota still does not have a C segment offering).

Considering their past record, I think they will launch the Fabia as a re-badged Octovia in India !! .. Or call it Linda or something equally ridiculous and price it sky high.

With the kind of support they have, they cant be a volume player. Their cars are indeed very good, but it takes more than that to be accepted in the volume game. If they indeed launch the Fabia, it would be awfully difficult to compete with the likes of Fiesta TDCi, Verna VGT, Elantra CRDI, etc even if they price it 'right'.

A reasonable amount of the success of Octavia/Laura is due to the fact that there is no decent diesel car in that segment. Sonata Embera diesel would cause some inroads here for sure. If Honda bring in a diesel here, the real game begins!

Roomster by mid-2007

Just read in Satuday's TOI, Skoda India MD Folc to be replaced.
Also mentioned that Skoda has plans launch Roomster by mid 2007.

I dont think they can afford to launch two cars so close to each other esp considering their a s s. They simply wont be able to cope up with the volumes.

Where does this leave Fabia launch then?
