Tata Sumo Gold - Refreshed Sumo!

Looks like Tata wants to 'refresh' the entire line up in its portfolio. After the Vista, Grande now comes the turn of the good old Sumo!

- To be launched this month
- To come up with new 3L CR4 engine meeting BS4

Wonder if this new 3L CR4 engine is the same as the 3L Dicor that did duty on the Safari before.

Re: Tata Sumo Gold - Refreshed Sumo!

The Suffix "Gold" was used for the Sumo Spacio. Spacio used the 3.0L DI engine (same as the one in the newer 207) - both in NA & TC versions.

I dont think "CR4" referred to Common -Rail. For Common Rail engines, Tata is using "Dicor".

Also, I dont think Tata will spend to adapt the Dicor engines to the Sumo at this stage of the Sumo's life-cycle.

Re: Tata Sumo Gold - Refreshed Sumo!

Just wondering why TATA is keen on changing the naming strategy for their Common-Rail engines, considering the DiCOR engines have already made very Good Reputation in the Market & its sounds good too, while on the other hand CR4, though seems to be derived from Toyota's D-4D, but it does looks, feels & sounds cheap.

Safari DiCOR based 3L DiCOR engine was Good albeit an archaic unit, as was completely built on the 407 engine, with added Delphi-Common rail fuel pump.
But to compete against its segment rivals like New Bolero m2Di-CR, upcoming Force TRAX CRDi this engine seems to be good enough for Age-Old Sumo/Spacio.
The recently tweaked & updated TATA-CR4 engine series seems to be even better in Refinement levels.

Would be interesting to see what amount of facelift the good-ol sumo will get. Looking at the new-ly launched Grande, I dont expect much difference in styling than the Victa. Lets see

They have been using CR4 to refer Common-Rail in the Indica/go - the one with 25KMPL as its USP!

Re: Tata Sumo Gold - Refreshed Sumo!

CRtorquefan , DICOR naming with hatches were a failure IRC.

Sad for a 3L to make just 70bhp/223ishNm ! Give it some power and good brakes!

Re: Tata Sumo Gold - Refreshed Sumo!

@Safari lover, thanks for that.

@JK, the DI Turbo 3.0L engine makes 70ps / 223 Nm. If this new Sumo has a CR4 engine - meaning a CR, then it should boast better numbers. If yes, I expect it to be tuned for FE, and not for power.

Now, to think like a devil: if this engine is good, will I be able to retro-fit it into my truck ?

This might be true because I saw some Sumo's testing on NH4 near pune, next time I am going to check if they have 4x4 in it.

Yes, it will.

Right, Bolero Strom is discontinued, now all versions have M2DI I guess and no 4x4.

Re: Tata Sumo Gold - Refreshed Sumo!

I have seen these testing outside the Pune plant. Just passed by, didn't get a good look, but not much looked different, apart from some graphics on the side. It looked like the regular Sumo. Didn't see the insides or the engine so maybe thats where the change is.

The DI 3.0l engine with 70Ps is the same one doing duty in the Tata 207 and 407 where 7 refers to 70 Ps. But the new CR4 engine should be the modified one for better efficiency and lower emissions.

Re: Tata Sumo Gold - Refreshed Sumo!

Why Sumo is not selling among private SUV buyers? Any Interior Photos?
Any TD for this coming up from SidIndica?

Surprised BOLERO is also as much crude vehicle IMHO but bought at a significant 8-10K monthly volumes by buyers of all walks. Even Bolero doesnot come with ABS/AIR BAGS.
