Re: VW Up! spotted testing in Pune, totally undisguised, 2 and 4 door versions spotte

VW Up! reengineered for emerging markets. A larger and roomier Up!

Quote:
Autoesporte reports that the German engineers are working on expanding dimensions of the UP! Volkswagen will be increasing the space at the rear for the emerging markets. The UP! was introduced as a four seater in Europe. However, in emerging markets rear passenger space is a plus point if it can carry 3 people.
Volkswagen will increase the bootspace by moving the spare wheel below the body. The capacity of the fuel tank will also be increased. We expect the interior and exterior design to also go through some changes to make it cheaper to manufacture.

An AT Diesel if it came would be a segment first as also a 2 door version. Yes the rear does have the all black look of the Brio but somehow this looks more conservative and may apeal to a larger segment of buyers. The wider door windows does give a hint of the base model slotting in quite low.

Overall they do look quite different from the competition in that segment.

Quote:
Volkswagen’s UK division have fitted the VW UP! with a semi-automatic gearbox. Yes, this transmission is ASG and not Volkswagen’s dual clutch DSG that we have been so used to seeing on products from the VW group.
Essentially, it is an automated version of the 5 speed manual in which either the driver can choose to shift cogs or let the gearbox do its thing. Unfortunately, there are no paddle shifters on the steering; one will have to use the stick to shift gears. It is very simple to operate – to get moving, the driver simply selects D to drive or R to reverse. There is no ‘P’ setting either for park once you stop, just neutral position.

Quote:
Volkswagen claims that the automatic version of the UP! gives 27.29 kmpl – 0.59 kmpl more than the manual variant. The CO2 emissions from the automatic variant show a marked 3g/km improvement.

Autoexpress UK have reviewed the 5-door Up!, which comes with a 3-cylinder 1L 74bhp engine. Here is the link to the report:

Volkswagen up! 5-dr | Auto Express

The overall packaging is good enough to enable 6 footers sit behind each other, but 3 people in the rear could be a pain. It is a fun to drive vehicle, yet the ride is supple/ absorbent .

Link to Carpoint Australia's Launch Review of the VW Up!, which coincidently is priced at almost Rs.7.50 lacs in Australia for the base is attached here under:

I believe the Indian base version, could be lot cheaper because absence of Airbags & the City Emergency Braking feature, but still it could be amongst the costliest hatches .

I always wished to hv a 2 door car, but not this one. I m happy with my BEAT. I love POLO n JETTA though.

VW has decided that it won't introduce Up in India. I think the price structure of the Up revealed itself that such a small car won't fly in India, given our socio-economic state here. We don't believe in very expensive small cars, howsoever well engineered ( what is that!).

Here is what it means, in reality it boils on to the price!

Quote:
Volkswagen may launch a new low-cost subbrand by 2015 to take on rivals including Renault's Dacia and Nissan's Datsun in markets including Europe, two company
Quote:
The vehicles would be aimed at fast-growing BRIC nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China), but may also be sold in Europe, the sources added.
Up's testing in India could be to have data for the development of the low cost brand.

Cheers!

VW has confirmed that they are working on twin cylinder diesel (variant of the 1.6 4-cylinder TDI) for the Up! that produces 47 bhp power.

Link to Motorbeam report o the Up! diesel:

I meant for most of us Indians well engineered is not terribly important, at least not as important as fuel efficiency and low TCO.

Volkswagen Up! spottings continue in Pune

Earlier Report & Discussion

We'd first spotted the VW Up! back in November 2011 (Thread Link)

The spottings continue as VW tests the li'l hatchback in Maharashtra. This time, it was caught in Pune by motorbash.com. The Up! was shod with alloys wearing fairly wide tyres.

While there has been speculation that VW will sell the Up! in the Indian market as a low cost car, the company is having difficulty with meeting cost targets. VW is still trying to figure out how to localise it extensively and thereby, price it competitively. Selling a small & cheap car might not go well with VW's premium brand aspirations either.

Different variants have been spotted testing, including a 2-door automatic and 4-door manual. The interiors are fairly basic with exposed metal on the inside of the doors, and can carry 4 occupants. A 1.0L petrol (with an optional CNG variant) powers the Up!, and a 2-cylinder 0.8L diesel is in the pipeline. The Up! started life as a rear wheel drive with a boxer engine, but the models on sale today feature the more conventional front engine & front wheel drive layout. It is based on VW's city car platform and was unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. An electric-powered Up! as well as a turbocharged petrol are slated for international launch later this year. Škoda sells its own version of the Up! badged as the Citigo.

Instead of trying that ridiculous hackjob on the Polo to make it a sedan, I wish they localize and launch the Up! here. It could work if the top end Up! was priced near the Trendline Polo.
