This is a great idea of maintaining average car running every month. I will follow it from 2012. My new year resolution is to track the monthly kms.

For me the running is typically high in monsoon season where south india becomes really beautiful due to rains. The running comes down drastically in summer months. For example, I have driven about 15000 kms between Sept 2010 and Dec 2010. But Jan 2011 and May 2011 I have done 4000 kms. Again June to September of 2011 I have done 18000 kms. This October November and December have been very low for me due to lack of Vitamin M.

Civics,they do around 1.5k a month.

City i-VTEC,that does around 2k a month.

Innova/City ZX/City Type 2,these do around 1k a month.

Thus far around 1100 kms per month (Based on my usage over the past 45 months - By car around 43500 kms and by motor cycle around 7000 kms). Motor cycle usage has come down drastically over the past two years.

Anticipated increase in usage, post January - Atleast another 350 kms to 700 kms (based on one or two visits to Pondy from Chennai).

My personal driving ranges between 2500 - 3000 kms. per month between home and office and weekend visits to DLF-Gurgaon where my mom as well as in-laws live. Hence, the need for fuel efficient diesels.

Other cars at home run about 750 Kms. combined.

Oh boy, I'm hardly driving!

Considering my car's FE (~10 kmpl) and the fuel prices, I don't drive to work so that cuts off many miles I drive.

Given the terrible traffic on weekends, I'd rather rest my rear in the BMTC Volvo and travel worry-free than burn my clutch (which happened anyway!). God bless the wonderful B'lore public transport system.

The times when I selfishly take the car out are for drives and a late-night coffee.

This and maybe 2 ~600 kms road trips a year hardly translate into roughly 7k kms a year.

Do about 2500 kms per month on the primary car and 500 odd on the seconday vehicles.

Totalling about 3000+ kms per month.

I wonder if once compares from the time when this survey was started vs today if Kms per month have decreased due to increase in petrol / diesel costs and increase in traffic on the roads. i.e. if people are using other modes of transport increasingly even if marginally.

Sadly for me inspite of increased cost of fuel and increased traffic the amount I drive has only increased in time. And though the vehicles have kept getting better the amount of driving one enjoys in the vehicle has dropped expecially on city roads.

I have done around 23K kms in the last 14 months.. Average monthly usage being 1.6 K since I bought Diesel Fabia..
Previously it was about 8 to 900 kms per month with WagonR ..
So I can very easily say with Diesel you always tempt to drive a bit more.. In my case it has become almost 'Double'! Oh, I never knew that!

My driving clocks around 1000-1200 KM, out of which, around 1000 is highway driving. Our highways can be really stressful but me, behind a wheel and I don't complan. As my Dad always, lock me in a car from morning to evening and I'll be coming out happy for sure.
