Mahindra Scorpio Automatic - Production stopped

Dear All,

Mahindra Scorpio automatic's production has been stopped from this month as DSI, their sole supplier of Auto trannies has stopped supplying to M&M (and SsangYong).

People who are looking for an auto might want to hurry up fast and get some in-stock products.

The risk factor is that, in the unlikely event of a tranny failure, replacement under warranty might be a challenge.

Re: Mahindra Scorpio Automatic - Production stopped

I respect Mahindra. I was very happy when the Auto Scorpio was launched. Really felt proud at that moment as it would have been the first Indian Auto SUV at this price bucket. I doubt TATA Safari ever explored this option. After reading this news - I feel maybe Mahindra is coming up with something of its own and hence the said move.

If XUV5oo can come out of its stable - an auto tranny is like nothing in comparison.

Purely my views. Please correct me if I am wrong here.

I mean then what does M&M say if there is a failure with existing owners?

New owners may not choose to buy one since its stopped.

Re: Mahindra Scorpio Automatic - Production stopped

Firstly the Scorpio Automatic is what i would call as a Jugaad. Something thats got a mind of its own when shifting. I think M&M got an autobox for the cheapest price and desperately tried to mate it with their otherwise brilliant engine and everything went wrong. I, for one, am a total advocate for automatic cars but i would never touch a Scorpio auto with a 10 foot pole. When the up shifts and downshifts will take place depends on something no one knows. No wonder it is being phased out. I believe the Ford Endevour comparatively is brilliant....remember i said comparatively. I dont think there should be a problem of parts as M&M are not a small fly by night company and are trying very hard at building their image as serious car builders. the XUV 500 has proved that in a big way. I see this as a realization of sorts that they are not going to now depend on shoddy stuff and are maybe looking for a good box to mate with their engine. I trust Mahindra....somewhat.

According to Indian Laws spares must be made available for at least 7 years once a model is stopped. The contract termination will not be abrupt, but Mahindra will have sufficient stock to cater to the number of auto boxes' scorpios sold.

Secondly, My Santro needed a replacement power-window switch, that was not available in india, but it was shipped from Korea. On the same lines, on request, i guess the same may be shipped from SsangYong too (would be costly but at least available). Mahindra is improving its service standards and am sure it wont let down its customers

I am not sure about the reason, but i guess maybe the quality and volume expectations of Mahindra did not match up to the DSI Quality.

Mahindra was looking for trannies for Scorpio, XUV, Korando and Rexton , rumored on Verito and Xylo. DSI would really have to scale up a lot to deliver these volumes and also at a better quality than the current Auto scorpio.

Sad news. Hope its for the better.

XUV and Scorpio definitely need automatic transmission.

Verito too needs an AT box.

Sangyong vehicles would come with their AT boxes, as AT would be used where these cars are manufactured.

Is the AT manufacturer cancelled for

1. No immediate or future launch of Scorpio in USA
2. Mahindra looking for AT boxes from China, like Tata is planning.

That is bad news indeed! The XUV with a good auto box would surely be the icing on the cake for Mahindra. I'm sure there would be quite a few takers.

Re: Mahindra Scorpio Automatic - Production stopped

I read it in the magazine but IIRC on the TV show were Hormazd mentioned that the company (DSI) has filed for bankruptcy and that the task of finding a new supplier of auto boxes has been given to Ssangyong which is why first the stoppage of the scorpio automatic and delay in the XUV automatic
