VW announces Global Recall of 26 lakh cars (including for the 7-Speed DSG)

VW has recalled 2.6 million units mainly in China (7.5 Lakh vehicles) and USA (8 lakh vehicles) across models like Passat, Golf, Beetle and Tiguan.

Reports are in today that Volkswagen Group is doing recalling 2.64 million vehicles across the world globally. The issues range from a simple electrical fix, to a potential fuel leak and a final fix for the troubled DSG gearboxes.

Of the total 2.64 million, a massive 1.6 million vehicles cars will be fixed for the DSG problem. The solution VW has found is to change the synthetic oil in the DS200 automatic to a mineral one.

According to the official statement, synthetic oil is responsible for causing short circuiting. This problem is especially bad in countries with humid and hot environment and where stop and go traffic is seen. But VW wants to fix every DS200, no matter the location, to "continue to ensure customer satisfaction".

"Within the framework of further quality monitoring in China and Southeast Asia, it has been discovered that, with vehicles with a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DQ200), electric malfunctions could occur in the gearbox power supply if synthetic gearbox oil is used. This applies in particular if the vehicle is subject to a hot and humid climate, coupled with a high proportion of stop & go driving," Volkswagen Group states.
VW has sent advisories to owners in other countries of the affected models. Has any VW/ Audi / Skoda owner in the team bhp community received such alers / advisories on potential problems in their vehicles?


India still doesn't have strong laws to fix errant auto manufacturers and impose penalty on them. There was a recent ray of hope as India may soon have a recall policy.

Pls do keep this thread active everyone with a DSG DQ200, including me, if there is any news on an official or unofficial recall, by Skoda or VW. Most of us would be owning Skoda: Superb TSI DSG, Octavia A7 1.8 TSI DSG, Laura TSI DSG. Volkswagen: Vento TSI, Polo GT TSI. I am not sure if the Octavia is already coming with mineral oil as a precaution or rather guinea pig tests. Everyone, pls be informed, and try squeezing information from the respective dealers on the official recall.

When you think of it, it is pretty pathetic that a company would only act upon this, if so required by law.

That is pretty unprofessional, if not down right unethical.

Does VW have any plans of offering the Polo GT TSI and the Vento TSI with a 5/6 Speed manual gearbox? Quite frankly, it's the super unreliable DSG that's scaring off many like me from possessing the wonderful little pocket-rocket that is the 1.2 TSI. A Polo GT TSI 6 Speed manual with ESP would be just purr-fect!

There isn't a doubt that the 7-speed DSG has suffered severe reliability issues, leaving several owners stranded by the roadside.

However, what I'm shocked by is: It took VW 3 years to nail the problem?

Seriously? 3 years??!! Goes to show that VW is either terribly slow or didn't give a damn.

They probably thought to bask in the limelight since I think Toyota also suffered great quality issues 3 years making them relinquish the #1 spot to VW?

Also would this cover Skoda and their other sub-brands as well?

I'm not sure this is good news. We're all the replacements so far, all the mechatronics changes, just palliative? And VW had no idea all this time what was wrong? Have they got it right this time?

Also, this may be a very ignorant question but isn't the DQ200 a dry-clutch setup? If so, then where is the oil used?

What's also really bothering me is that:

1. None of the Indian auto car mags' site is carrying the story (as of now) while it was headlines enough for a broader publication like WSJ;

2. None of them hence bother to ask VW about the fate of Indian customers, while they carry other fresh articles on VW's discounts and so forth (Autocar India).

Shouldn't a auto reporter be calling VW's PR person, take VW India's official line and file a story ahead of WSJ? Common Autocar India, you can do better. And don't complain that you lose circulation to Team BHP!

VAG have all their bases covered, remember those roadblocks and 8 page supplements with a leading daily? The PR machine which provides expensive travel junkets for journos to experience snow driving and all India road trips for free definitely pays off at a juncture like this.

The journos will plug any brand that advertises in their publication, even old concepts like an ad somewhere in the magazine has been replaced with a fold out in between an "expert review".

I wonder what pushes them to continue with design that limits the quantity of lubricant in the gearbox, the Audi version is better because this has been modified, something like dual lubrication - not getting into the technicalities here.

Interesting! It took so many years of trial & error for them to identify the problem, and a surprisingly simple solution – replace of synthetic oil with a mineral one!

If this was the case, I wonder what fixes they were doing with their earlier recalls in some markets.

I hope they’ve got it right this time.

Not sure what he mean by that. They say it’s a Global Recall, and I don’t see a reason for excluding India from that.

Confusing approach by VAG, if true. Their explanation of probable cause (hot/humid climate, stop-go traffic) describes Indian driving conditions accurately. So, no recall for India just because our rules are lax?

Why blame VW ?? Unless government makes the mandate, no businessman would incur unnecessary loss.
If I or you were to head VM P&L in India, decision wouldn't be different.
It's like blaming the government when roads get flooded during monsoon, but we wouldn't vote or elect the right leader m
