July 2015 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Management Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

Re: July 2015 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Maruti Omni is approximately 30 years old model and is still among top 10 selling vehicles,Impressive.
Xylo, Sumo,Evalia ,Mobilio and Lodgy, all added still don't match the numbers of Innova. Ertiga is the only performer apart from Innova in the MPV segment. Given a chance Toyota would not mind selling it forever with price hike every year. Same is the story with Fortuner.
2700 odd copies of Xcent?? something is not al-right. Hyundai ships 6700 copies of Creta, would be interesting to see if those numbers can be maintained going further. While sales of Duster and Terrano have plummeted, Ecosport see an increase in sales.

Re: July 2015 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

The Dzire appears to be holding steady at the No.1 spot having firmly dislodged the Alto. I was curious to see how the new Jazz and the Creta fared, having seen the forum members bash them up for the apparent pricing blunders from the respective manufacturers. But the market seems to have given both these cars a thumbs up with that rousing reception. Let's see if they can sustain these numbers on the long run.

That apart, the Top 10 now has 6 Marutis, 3 Hyundais and just 1 Honda. Good luck, the rest of the players!

Re: July 2015 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Bolero and Duster numbers point to them being refreshed soon? Swift now selling a fair amount less than the Dzire.

Hyundai lost market in almost all vehicles but the Creta seems to have high demand if all those shipped are sold in the same month.

Some joy for the Nano and Safari+Storme, but the Zest and Bolt just keep falling. Don't understand why the Zest isn't selling, to be honest.

Re: July 2015 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

I would like to add to the statistics with figures for segment-wise market share over a period of last month, 3 months and 6 months. These numbers give a fair picture of each vehicles market share within its own segment and whether they are gaining or losing. Plus the percentage market share and overall segment-wise sales are colour-coded to reflect relative position.

Segmentation might not be perfect but I have done it to the best of my knowledge. Have also highlighted (in yellow) top 10 sellers for each month over the past six months. Hope this is helpful.

An interesting trend for July sales is that even though overall the number of vehicle sales has increased vis-à-vis last month and the same month last year, there has been a considerable shift in sales of vehicles among various segments.

B1: Increase in sales over the last month. Higher than the last 6 months average

B2: Highest sales in the last 6 months – Jazz contributing to making the pie bigger in the same segment

C1: Average sales, though less than Jun’15

C2: Drastic reduction in sales – lowest in the last 6 months. Around 35% reduction as compared to the average sales in the last 6 months. Creta & S-Cross effect most probably; Jazz could also have played a role, considering the increasing significance of sub 4 metre cars in crowded Indian cities.

Urban S/MUV: Around 50% jump in sales over the average sales in the last 6 months. Result of Creta launch (healthy 6783 units – straightaway among the top 10 seller) and initial shipments of the S-Cross. Next month is going to be really interesting with the official launch of the S-Cross and possibly the first full shipment of vehicles to dealers. Discounts can be expected on C2 sedans, especially from those manufacturers without any presence in the urban S/MUV segment – viz. VW (Vento), Skoda (Rapid), the lesser mortals – FIAT (Linea), Ford (Fiesta), Nissan (Sunny), Renault (Scala); the big one - the segment leader - Honda (City); and maybe even Hyundai (Verna) & Maruti Suzuki (Ciaz)

(Utility) MUV: Drastic reduction in sales – lowest in the last 6 months. Around 30% reduction as compared to the average sales in the last 6 months. Bolero falling out of the top ten, after a long time (possibly since 2010)

S/MUV: Lowest sales in the last 6 months, but not a drastic decline

Re: July 2015 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

So I see the Elite i20 sales dropped marginally from around 12K average to 10K average since Jazz was launched. Not bad, eh

And the segment itself has seen sales increase - finally, Indian customers seem to be accepting the premium hatch segment

But, what's with this phenomenal performance of Dzire? Here's a car that was written off as one of the most ugliest cars around and doing 20K sales. The AT was the secret sauce I feel.

July 2015 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Thanks Aditya. Good as usual.
Creta debuts in the top 10. So what does it take. The Honda City, Ciaz, Verna, Duster and Terrano.
C segment sedans seems to be the big losers along with the Duster with a marginal impact on the D segment sedans. Creta is carpet bombing this space.

The Sedans have lost 4% market share. 2% each to the hatchbacks presumably the swift I20 and Jazz, the SUVs the Creata being the main gainer. If this trend continues its bad news for Honda until the BRV slots in. They will
soon loose the slot back to Mahindra who seems unaffected.

Ecosport is still holding on well. It's a great product and at this price will hold on. Don't get greedy Ford. Keep the facelift Ecosport price similar.

Duster now needs to rush in the facelift soon or they will have ample capacity for the Kwid.
The next 3 months will give an accurate picture.

Re: July 2015 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Duster at ~1000 units, which is less than 50% of it's average monthly sales. Not sure whether it is the all time lowest since it's launch, my wild guess is that it might be so. Looks like the speculated Automatic / face lifted Duster will be a reality sooner than earlier reports which speculated October / November 2015 festive season launch. With exorbitant pricing of first the Creta then followed by S-Cross, this Compact SUV / SUV segment is getting very exciting.

If only Ford also joins the party and brings the Ecosport Face lift sooner, then the monthly sales chart comparison of Duster, Ecosport, Creta & S-Cross will be more interesting and generate more TRP than any prime time show.

Re: July 2015 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Thanks for the charts / graphs and tables Aditya.

Small observation: MoM comparison of "Top Gainers / Losers" should indicate Jun'15 and Jul'15, isn't it?

General Motors : Shipped 0 Sparks in Jul'15. What does this translate into?

Cheers!

Re: July 2015 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

If I may, it seems like an interesting past month even though the changes aren't by much. I feel the Jazz launch has affected 2 vehicles, one being the Hyundai Xcent, the other their own Amaze. This seems to be obvious since there's a near drop in demand of 2-2.5k vehicles for both the sub 4m sedans. However if going by regression statistics, this number will differ substantially from this month as Jazz will no longer be a brand new entrant.

Now the other change, I feel the launch of Creta has affected quite a few vehicles marginally, its only a guess but the Scorpio, Duster & Terrano are down by a couple of thousand units cumulatively. Maybe even a few dozen sales of the i20/Active too, have gone to Creta.

Now the most interesting part - to me its so obvious, the country loves the compact sedan body style & even higher than average prices of 6-8L on road does not seem to stop people from buying them in tens of thousands. Why not? Afterall its a kind of body style that is made exclusively for value & space. What does Ford do after they have gone through so much of work - establish a new factory, new brand ambassador, new design and what not just to bring an all-new compact sedan to India? This is exactly how a launch is NOT supposed to be. They simply started way too early with the marketing, promotions etc only to have a damp squib of a pre-launch. They've done everything but announce prices & give out test drives.. i.e the 2 most essential things. By now its already an old product before touching the road. I hope in future no teasers, pre-launches or soft launches happen for any car, bring them out with a bang one fine day and let the demand speak for itself - simple, beautifully aggressive marketing.

Re: July 2015 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

What happened to the Duster only 1000+ shipments? The lodgy is dying fast and how! The king of MUV is still the Toyota Innova and compact MUV remains MS Ertiga.

The Toyota Fortuner when it was launched costed 18.45L ex-showroom, Delhi and now even after numerous features and variants added and a price tag of 32L+OTR manages to sell 1500+ copies a month.

Sad that even though the Tata Zest is one heck of a car in the sub 4m segment, manages to be a market dud.

6k+ shipments of the Jazz and Creta!!! A good month for Honda and good start for Hyundai.

Toyota Camry still selling 100+ units for 3 consecutive months!! The hybrid seems to be working its magic.
