Indeed, the responsibility of our and our loved ones safety rests with us. But we as informed consumers indeed have a right to expect more from Manufacturers beyond what is "mandated" by law.

Do we not criticize manufacturers who skimp on the LHS mirror?
Do we not appreciate manufacturers who provide safety features on all variants?
Do we not appreciate manufacturers who provide 6 airbags when it is not mandatory?

In similar line, why should we not blame Mahindra for this 6th seat contraption. It is outright unsafe and am sure no one disagrees with that. This completely nullifies that goodwill it generates by offering safety features across all variants. I could still accept if Mahindra officially called it a 5 seater and people would misuse it as a 6 seater. But Mahindra officially offers it as a 6-seater, which is IMHO criminal.

Just imagine, people do misuse their car buy traveling with kids/young adults in the boot. Would we accept it without complain if a manufacturer provides a seat there, to encourage such behavior? Mahindra definitely needs to be criticized for this, in my personal opinion.

From a comman mans perception i also somehow feel the 6th seat to be unsafe. But i doubt whether it is going to unsafe as we really project? with a lap belt in place there should be definitely some safety there for middle passenger. Of course there is no airbag for the 6th man, but then we have to rule out 90% of the cars in market just for that. Also we can very well blame Mahindra to why they havent made seat belt mandatory. Also Mahindra is stressing it as an occasional 6 seater and not full time one, however this statement is ambiguous and can be deciphered either way to our own conclusion.

Anyways to put all these queries to rest, i hope Mahindra comes up with a proper explanation with their test results and all to convince us.

Look at the gear lever position and your doubts should be answered. In the event of a crash, and with just a lap belt, your head will be pushed towards the gear lever. Just imagine how horrendous that could be.

All that Mahindra will say (and has said) is that they comply to current safety regulations (which does not mandate anything).

shashanka

Not specific to the KUV - but these days, every single car equipped with ABS also has EBD by default. It is only an added software function, and only serves the function of a proportioning valve. I don't know why OEMs still bother to mention it as a feature.

ESC / ESP (the same thing - but different names) is a completely different function though, and it requires different hardware (including additional sensors) and software.

Not really sir, not really! Even if it had a 3 point seat belt for the middle seat, I highly doubt if it would be enough for saving the 6th passenger; leave alone the lap belt.

WIth a lap belt his torso will remain in place, somewhere on the seat, but the head will surely be thrown ahead in case of a front crash and what do we have there?
A poking-in-your-face gear lever!! Enough recipe for disastrous outcome for the unfortunate 6th passenger!

I sincerely wish to see how KUV is passing the frontal crash test as an when it is mandatory.

Congrats on your booking. Honestly, I would've preferred the 6 seat variant not that I'm going to put anyone in that 6th seat, but just for the sake of that wide comfy armrest. Anyways...what is the delivery date given to you? Do post some pics.

+1 to that. And obviously the middle occupant has no protection in the form of an airbag either, which the other 2 front passenger sears are offered with.

I had the thought too. But, i felt that the arm rest is too wide for my liking.
also, i was afraid that it would interfere with my elbow while driving.

no confirmation on delivery date yet. The sales person will call me in a couple of days to confirm. ( I was told that i would receive a message from Mahindra which has not happened so far )

I too didn't feel comfortable having set the 6th seat as arm rest during my short TD. I had to lift the seat up before resuming my TD. As I'm not considering the vehicle, I didn't give much thought to this and my time with the car is limited, so will need more time to actually firm up the opinion about hand rest.

Probably whoever are considering this vehicle should do elaborate test drives checking out the comfort of the hand rest before finalizing the car.

A weird question from me... is there a chance (though not planned) that when the two frontal airbags deploy, can they cover the middle passenger as well ?
Personally I liked the middle row for armrest so much, but wont be using that for a person probably because of how it will be inconvenient for drivers who are well built. The primary reason people got for these tall boy is to have space to ride in a relaxed manner and not like a town bus. I also do like the option that I can now slide via the seat to exit in opp side in tight park spaces.
Here we are talking about frontal airbags wherein in US rules are made to have mandatory side and front air bags by 2017 and rollover airbags by 2018.

I was advised by my friend that don't add up accessories from Mahindra Dealership they charge u extra. So I am planning to buy them later after picking up my car from them, I just asked them for the coating, for which they advised that they will do it form 3M and charge 9000 for it, It includes underbody n upper body coating. Is it a good deal?

Thats also a good option. But seeing their price list for accessories, the basic ones seems to be fair priced like side beedings parking camera etc. You can check and take a decision. As far as coating is concerned, i personally dont prefer paint coating as a regular waxing once in a year or six months will keep the paint clean. Underbody and antirust coating and always good to have

Ok thanks for the valuable info I'll check out the prices outside n in Mahindra and take decision. As far as coating is concerned the sales guy already did it yesterday so It cannot be undone (just talked to him). M thing of buying bull bars for front & rear, rear spoiler and maybe a rear camera as it seems reasonable.
