There's a Premier Padmini ,
belongs to a neighbour,really dont know how much KM's have been done on
the ODO but its a '75 Model,still in great shape and runs well.It has been repainted by the
owner several times and probably have gone through a engine overhaul but
whoa 1975 model is like that's 33 years, so i guess that says a lot doesn't it.

I've always been fascinated with the idea of buying a new car, and then keeping it with you for the rest of your life.

Imagine this,

• you save your salary and buy it new when you are a bachelor,
• then you get married and it is there when you take your new wife for a ride in it.
• Its there in every family photo,
• the children grow up with it alongside,
• it stays by you when you lose your job and retire. Now both old, you and the car look to each other for company.
• You get stopped by strangers, 30 years from now, who get all nostalgic by the car
• And then you pass away, leaving your beloved car to be kept in your memory

I'm looking for a car that would stand the test of time, and one that can be bought with a Bachelor's salary

Will look at doing a lot of research to zero in on the perfect buy - and we can live happily everafter

This is one car that refuses to die and fade away. It can still be bought for 2 lakhs, and there are so many cars that finding spares for the next 50 years would not be a problem.

It is a very basic no nonsense kind of vehicle that can keep going on and on. The MARUTI may not adjust to you, but you definitely can adjust to it

This one is a rolling piece of history. It can be repaired anywhere in the country and can be kept going for years on end. Its easy to live with and very practical, its available in diesel but is not value for money.

Eternal design, and solid build to last through many many winters. Easily availabe spares and the ideal DIY vehicle. Its never going to go out of fashion and can evolve alongwith you.

The model which is on its last legs, but one that helped a giant to get up on its feat, brought the company back into the black. Something that is again built to last but does not have too much of a soul.

Its available in diesel and petrol and is quite cheap to buy new, and is tremendous value for money

How about the Fiat Palio.... Very strong build and its looks will last for a life time

the service and parts availability is one thing which you have to keep checking every year, because its getting better every time

The PALIO is also a very strong candidate. See the plus points

1. Its not much in demand and can be bought at a bargain
2. Its built to last and last and last
3. Its spread all through the world, and parts can be shipped from Brazil, where it is that country's MARUTI 800
4. The petrol one is simpler to repair
5. Its got most modern features and I don't see it becoming completely obsolete in the next few decades

This one is definitely for the future. It'll keep going long after fossil fuel are drained out. Its built tough, but is going to be very difficult to maintain since there are only a few of them.

One definitely needs to keep atleast 2 sets of body panels and stuff like that is stock at home, just in case there is any eventuality

You can keep any car for lifetime as long as you are happy to spend unlimited amount of money to keep it fit.

If the cost of repair needs to be minimized, can't think of any better candidate than Maruti 800.

If i were to buy one such car, my priorities would be:

1. It should be spacious. From being single to family man, there would be obvious increase in space requirements.
2. At the same time it should be cheap to buy. That's because a typical bachelor would not want to buy an 8 lakh Sedan, he would most probably go for an hatchback.
3. Car must have exceptional after sales support. This is by far the most important criteria, since you can only keep the car forever if the after sales is good, and availability of spare part is not at all a problem.
4. Reliability of Engine, and/or other mechanical and electrical parts is a major criteria.
5. Car must look contemporary or better still futuristic, so that even after years down the line, you do not feel "out of the crowd" when amidst traffic consisting of modern cars.

Based on the above criteria, i can think of these (sadly 2 of them are not launched yet):

1. Suzuki Splash - Score well in all of the points except maybe 5.
2. Hyundai i20 - Score well on all points, but a point 2 is a bit weak.
3. Honda Jazz - Same as Hyundai i20.
5. TATA Indica Vista - A bit weak in point number 4.

OT here,

I would cherish a Contessa (though heavily modified). I have a childhood dream of customizing a contessa drapping it with decals of flames and writing Fireblade on the bonnet, having broad jet-black tyres with shinning alloys and of course nitro boosted to spew fire out of the silencer. If they made one such, i will cherish it for my entire life. I think it would resemble the old mustang in some way.
