Volkswagen Ameo 1.5L Diesel launched at Rs. 6.33 lakh

The Volkswagen Ameo Diesel has finally been launched in India, at prices starting from Rs. 6.34 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The Ameo Diesel is available in three trims: Trendline, Comfortline and Highline. Feature distribution amongst trim levels is similar to that of the petrol models.

Powering the Ameo diesel is an updated version of the 1.5-litre four-cylinder TDI diesel engine that now churns out 108 BHP. The slight bump up in power is a result of a larger turbocharger. There are two transmission options on offer: a 5-speed manual and a 7-speed DSG. The automatic gearbox is only available with the Comfortline and Highline trims.

With this powertrain, the Ameo has now become the most powerful compact sedan in the Indian market. Moreover, with the diesel automatic combination, the Ameo will rival the Maruti DZire and Tata Zest automatics, which employ a more basic AMT unit.

Safety features on offer include dual airbags and ABS as standard on all trims. The DSG variants also get a couple of additions as compared to the manual models. These DSG exclusive features include Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and hill hold control. The top-end models are equipped with segment-first features, including cruise control, rain sensing wipers, anti-pinch power windows and rear A/C vents.

Ex-showroom Delhi prices are:
• Trendline MT - Rs. 6,33,600
• Comfortline MT - Rs. 7,35,150
• Comfortline DSG - Rs. 8,50,150
• Highline MT - Rs. 8,16,900
• Highline DSG - Rs. 9,31,900

to VW for giving AT in comfortline and highline variants, premium of Rs. 1.15 over MT is perfectly justified, given that AT features ESP and Hill hold.

The swift ZDi AGS costs 8.57 lacs, the Ameo highline DSG is just Rs. 74 K more which makes it most VFM considering the more powerful engine, safety features and the advanced DSG, not to mention the timeless front end design

Kudos to VW

This is amazing; seems that VW is keenly taking interest in the Indian market and is very well geared up to give fight to no. 1 and no. 2 players when the new vehicle safety norms are implemented next year.

Sub 10 L diesel with non-compromised Autobox and long list of features !

What else one can ask for?

Cheers to VW

Re: Volkswagen Ameo 1.5L Diesel launched at Rs. 6.33 lakh

Not only is it cheaper than the less powered Polo TDI across the range, but even more surprising is the fact that they have priced the TDI DSG Highline almost on par with the current Polo GT TDI. How are they doing that?. Cross posting an image from another post showing the Polo prices.

That Comfortline TDI DSG at 8.5L is on par with the Zest AMT XTA and cheaper than the Dzire ZDI AMT. These two will have some more features, but in return you get stuff like Hill Hold, ESP and a far superior gearbox with a class leading performance.

So if they can offer a 110bhp Ameo DSG at the same price of the Polo GT TDI, I assume they should have no issues dropping the price of the GT TDI manual with an updated engine and also introduce the GT TDI DSG at similar price point as the Ameo.

Doubt that will happen though.

Re: Volkswagen Ameo 1.5L Diesel launched at Rs. 6.33 lakh

Excellent line up from VW and full marks for the feature list!

Also commendable that AT is not just restricted to only one variant.

Somehow I feel its a case of too late - the market has shifted away from the strong diesel preference that once existed.

But, if there were a diesel I would want to own, it would be a VAG group diesel <pardon the emission >.
And for such a customer, this is brilliant news!

Couple of observations / thoughts after the launch
- VW might have localised more leading to a better cost structure for the engine
- The Polo GT TDI will either get a price cut or get a DSG shortly.
- Its a strange world in here where the petrol automatic (GT TSI) costs more than a diesel automatic.

In all, kudos to VW for the launch. Good timing too, just a day before Navaratri sets in!

Absolutely right. I heard from an insider that there are so many components that they have localized.
For eg, It seems the parts of AC units which is Bosch in Polo has been replaced by an Indian Brand (TVS Is it?). Not just AC units, but lots of parts of the car supplied by Bosch has been replaced by Indian Brand so that localization will reduce the price. Even thickness of sheet metal used has a difference of 2-4mm or something it seems.

But still, to price it so aggressively, hats off to VW .

Excellent pricing by VW. If I had to go for a diesel car in the sub-10 lakh rupee range, it would be a difficult choice between the Ameo and the Elite I20.

I think it might happen that they drop prices of Polo TDI. No reason to have hatch and one with the boot at similar price and same configuration. We might actually see something good for prospective Polo TDI customers. Though I'm not one of them.

This is sensible pricing from VW. The Ameo diesel is the package that should click for them. If only VW can correct their after sales service and service costs this will sell like hot cakes.
As many members have pointed out Ameo is superior to its competition in features (some of them being segment first), handling, build quality and has a clean design. It is the only compact sedan to offer a DSG. Having the option of DSG in a middle variant too helps.
Let's see how much boost does Ameo gives to VW.

VW has clearly realized that aggressive pricing along with class leading feature list is the only way to put up a big fight against the segment king Swift Dzire.

I don't think VW will reduce the prices of Polo, however they might increase the price of Ameo after some time if they get good response. Also Polo is considered a premium hatch by the aam junta, so VW left the price of Polo untouched.

Re: Volkswagen Ameo 1.5L Diesel launched at Rs. 6.33 lakh

There are already talks of VW working on the new platform for Polo. It looks like they would retain only the GT versions of the Polo, and shelve the rest of the versions. As an already low seller, Polo, is preferred only by enthusiasts that too after Swift and Figo. Enthusiasts would prefer the GT over a normal version. Thus, it looks like the end of the road for higher than Ameo priced versions of Polo.

On the new platform of Polo (MQB A0 platform) for India, VW is struggling with its cost model as it seems a difficult business case as of now.
They could fast track the Compact /UV based on Polo as the case seem to be brighter with respect to pricing.

A new small car from VW is planned for 2017 - not sure if this will replace the Polo here as the Next Gen Polo is likely to be > 4m length and maybe appear as a premium hatch in India.

In such a case it will justify Ameo being cheaper than the 2018 Polo!

Re: Volkswagen Ameo 1.5L Diesel launched at Rs. 6.33 lakh

Just cannot believe the prices. Definitely a VFM among the sub 4m cars and now I guess VW is serious about India. The only real grouse I had with the Vento is about their diesel injectors. If your usage is less, beware about the injectors; a replaced injector got kaput within a year for the same reason.

Polo comfortline is costlier than the Ameo comfortline by 50k! Actually, I'm more interested in the Polo just because of the hideous boot-work of the Ameo. So is it wise to wait for a price cut for the Polo comfortline?

Can already imagine the long waiting list. Quite happy with their extremely aggressive pricing which proves that you don't need to compromise on safety at this price range. No double standards for the chassis like most manufacturers either. Diesel TL seems like a steal at that price.

Now if only they'd bring a new petrol motor for both cars and update the polo TL with abs as well quickly
