Re: Ever sold a car (used) for more than you bought it (new)?

I guess Yamaha RX100 would be at top spot if we talk about bikes in this scenario. In Pune,Kolhapur there are many people who have stocked Yamaha parts and do a good business out of it. People purchase a running condition Yamaha RX100 in 20k-30K range, restore it for for approximate 25K-30K and sell it. One of my friend who had spent total 50K on Yamaha RX100 restoration had got offer of 90K cash in Kolhapur.

I guess other than the Innova all the other examples have been out of production vehicles.

That is the appreciation of price is after the production of the same has ended.

Is there any other one who got appreciation for his car whilst it was still in production?

Anyone who owned and sold his RD 350 prior to say 2007 -08, will die off a heart attack today, if he just sees the price at which dead/junk RD's are going at currently. Don't even bother to ask for the prices of the one's which are in running condition.

Knowing how the market in Europe views old Citroens (apart from the classics like DS, SM, XM, et al), how on earth did you manage to sell a Xantia for more than you bought it?

On the same note, when I was living in the UK (2006), I really wanted to buy a BMW E28 5-series (didn't because of wife's objections), and they were selling for around 2000-2500 GBP. When I relocated to come back to India in 2010, they were going for around 5000 GBP. Today, for that kind of money, you will get really old and tired examples. Good ones are listed at over 8000 GBP.

Some classic cars have become appreciating assets!!

Re: Ever sold a car (used) for more than you bought it (new)?

Well, it use to be quite common in 70s and 80s when there was license raj and long waiting times to get premium on selling the vehicle.
Dad bought second hand Herald for 7k and sold her for 15k after using for 9 years.
He also got allocated brand new Bajaj under government quota and was getting double the price for selling it off from show room itself. Used for 10 years and sold for double the price.
The only exception which I see in today's world is Innova and partly the reason for this so called "appreciation" is that Toyota raises the price of Innova by 5L-7L across generations which subtly raises the price of old car.

PS: Many in my company buy Innova on Lease Policy and make money at end of tenure

A well modded/restored black Contessa is a huge hit among the youth today.
In addition any well maintained Fiat 1100D, Ambassador Mark 1, Contessa and SS80 can fetch a princely sum today.

Found the following 'somewhat' relevant threads upon search-
  1. Classic cars available for purchase
  2. Cost of classic cars when new

Re: Ever sold a car (used) for more than you bought it (new)?

RD 350 is king in this lineup!!
Then Toyota Qualis & Innova in cars, and RX 100 / RE in bikes too have that charm to attract buyers ready to pay more that the vehicles were originally bought for! Of course the list isnt complete.

Though I dont buy the "this isnt appreciation of asset since the inflation isnt taken into account" logic - game is same for everyone.

I mean, A Tata Safari (no offense to this legendary vehicle & its owners) would hardly fetch 50% of its original value after 5 years of usage (take inflation into picture and it reduces into 30-32% of original price) - in this context 10 years old Innova fetching more than its cost price is so so impressive, and I am sure even if inflation figures are taken into account, a respectable outcome is assured!

Ah the days!

During my MBA, we had a Yamaha RX 135 which a senior would sell to a college junior at the end of his MBA. The bike typically kept appreciating by about a 1,000 Rupees every year. My batchmate, who had the bike, sold it off for Rs 1,000/- more than he bought it for.

And history repeated itself every year!

This way the bike had remained in the Institute for quite few years, and the sweet sounding two stroke engine would reverberate every day in the halls of the institute.

Pulled it off.
Well, it is really the Smooth Ride that the buyer was most impressed with. It's Hydropneumatic suspension is very very good. In fact, the same suspension was licensed by Rolls Royce amongst others. Maybe that was my trump card.

Both my Jeeps, I sold them for more. Yes, I did spend a lot restoring them.

1994 CJ340 - Bought in 2008 at 2L, sold in 2013 for 3L.
1998 MM550 - Bought in 2012 at 2.5L, sold in 2015 for 3.25L.

Re: Ever sold a car (used) for more than you bought it (new)?

Funny thread.

We talk about absolute values when we compare the two prices but forget the multiple factor(s) that probably allowed such a case
  1. Inflation
  2. Additional $/Rs/etc spent on maintenance during the ownership
  3. The rare version/brand of car that is in high demand
  4. The likely chance that either the previous seller or the next buyer did a really bad deal

To add to this list, here's my contribution
2015: Purchased a 1+ year old Cannondale Quick 6 bike for $200
2016: Sold the bike for $250. Rode about 100-odd miles during the one year of ownership. Spent max of $20 in maintenance.

Factor 4 was the key for me; the original owner had no idea what his bike was worth; and it didn't feel right to me to go over $250 (I easily could have sold it at $300).

Re: Ever sold a car (used) for more than you bought it (new)?

Bought one of the first batch of Maruti "High Roof" Vans in 1985 for Rs. 64,000.00.
Sold in 1995 for Rs. 85,000.00 with 70K on the clock.
Probably spent a total of 10K in the 10 years I had it.
Buyer did not even take a test drive.
Van was sold in 10 minutes flat.

I sold my Honda Accord Coupe for a profit of $500 after using it for 1 year. I purchased it for $12,400 from a Nepali guy and sold it to a dealer in exchange for Nissan Pathfinder at $12,900.

Re: Ever sold a car (used) for more than you bought it (new)?

Yezdi Roadking bought for 7k in 2003. Sold for 30k in 2012. I don't consider this motorcycle to be a collectors item (Jawa Yes) but still fetched me a quite a bit. I could have got a little more. I was an idiot.

My Yezdi 350 Twin which I bought for 16k back in 2004. Have been offered 80k and for a motorcycle that isn't even road legal. Won't ever sell this lovely motorcycle.

My buddy back in Cochin who sold his ugly green top of the line Qualis for almost the amount he paid for it. It was immaculate though.

The old Royal Enfield standard cast iron 500 commands a high resale even though the motor longevity and design is suspect.

But why isn't it road legal?
