Yezdi's are also going this way. My dad sold his in 2003 for ten times what he paid but that is purely attributed to inflation. .... Premier Padmini .. sold for 10K more than we got it in the early 2002 after 7 or 8 years. Inflation again!
If the Yezdi fetched 10 times the purchase price in 2003, then it can be counted more as the art of selling rather than inflation.

My dad's Yezdi D250 classic bought for ~12K in 1982 was sold in 2003 for 7.5K in immaculate condition. Have fond memories if it. Hard to imagine then that the Yezdi has become a collectible item given the price it commands now.

remember the late 1970's was a period of high inflation. I bought a Premier Padmini DX for 53k in 1979 and a year later my brother in law bought the same car for 68.5k. One must vector in the slightly higher taxes in MP, but ....

Apologies for diverging the discussion to 2 wheelers. I have a Yahama RXZ which has definitely appreciated in value from the time that I bought it till now. I definitely love my bike and havent thought of selling it but the prices on classifieds for the RXZ are definitely higher than the price I bought it for. Cant miss the fact that the bike is still an outstanding experience that you cannot compare to any of the new bikes. Love every moment of my bike. I hope the bikers agree to this

Re: Ever sold a car (used) for more than you bought it (new)?

Not Car but I have something to share about our Rajdoot Bike.

My Dad bought a new Rajdoot 175 Bike in 1978 for around 5500 Rs. Its not in use since 1995 but its been painted and chromed around 3 times after that. Last in 2005 we got an offer of 14000 Rs for the bike. Its almost 3 times the price we bought .

Obviously, now it should fetch only scrap value as motorcycling trends have drastically changed in the past decade but its still in very good condition.

Re: Ever sold a car (used) for more than you bought it (new)?

Yes, We have had a few:
My father's 1971 Ambassador Mk2 bought for 15K in 78 sold in 88 for 25K!
A Maruti 800's one bought for 80K in 1986 & sold 5 years late for about a lakh!
Another 800 bought for 1.25L & sold for the same price 5 years later!

This trend seems to have changed post 2000, when availability & market conditions started changing.

I picked up my bike direct from the factory, when traders had bought the land and were disposing off everything for almost peanuts. It was a cash transaction. There was no receipt as such. As a result, I do not have have any proof or registration documents. To this day, this motorcycle I own does not have legal documents such as an RC book to say that it is mine. As a result, I rarely use it. It is now in the hands of my best buddy fm tharian. Can't really ride it other than taking it around the block. When I had my Road King, I used the same papers from this bike as few recognized the 350 Twin. I do not know how to register this motorcycle. I'll have to cook up a story of sorts which I have not bothered doing in over a decade. All I can do now is source papers for a discarded 350 Twin, stamp the chassis and engine number and maybe then it can be considered road legal.

Back in the day, I had the option of picking up documents for a pittance but with all my savings gone towards the bike and cash borrowed from my father, I could not not even think of spending a penny more on papers. I should have been smarter about this back then.

Brand new Yezdi Roadking's were sold for as little as 10K. New engine block for as little as Rs. 500 a piece. For those we knew about the sale at the factory and who had the dough, they stocked up on every single spare for their motorcycles.

Re: Ever sold a car (used) for more than you bought it (new)?

I have a lot of examples from my previous cars and bikes.

Chevrolet Optra Magnum 2.0 Tdi - Bought for 6.15 lacs and sold for 6.15 after using for 8 months.

Skoda Laura 1.9 Td L&K bought for 7.65 lacs and sold for 7.45 lacs used for 6 months.

Royal Enfield Machismo 500 bought for 120k in 2009 and sold for 120k last week.

While vehicles are considered as depreciating assets but in many cases, if you have picked up a vehicle which is rare, the case would be opposite.

Re: Ever sold a car (used) for more than you bought it (new)?

Interesting thread - Reminds me of my initial ownership in this case it's the older version of Santro.

I bought a Santro Zip plus 2002 model in 2013 which was lying unused in our colony uncovered and collecting dust. I approached the owners - an aged couple. They owned 3 cars out of which the Santro was primarily used by the lady who apparently stopped driving from few years due to knee issues. Hence it had clocked just 40K in all its 11 years.
Though they never intended to sell the car they finally discussed and agreed to part with it for 1.40 lacs whereas I pointed out few rust spots & tyre conditions and we finally agreed upon 1.05 to seal the deal. All I later spent was 7K to fix the car and make it road worthy, used it for couple of years and finally sold it off for 1.10 in end of 2015 as it was getting due for fitness. Though maintenance was dead cheap for the car it wasn't to the tastes of a driving enthusiast.

The money was later used to buy a Baleno lxi - 2006 which costed 20% cheaper but with 100% more fun to drive.
Though it's a nightmare if you are in need of few spares, so far I haven't hit a dead end where I could never get one - used or new. Car still runs butter smooth - touchwood!

When I first started driving, I had bought a second hand Maruti 800 ( Pondy Registration) for Rs.One lac in 1992 and sold it for Rs.1.10 lac in 1994 after converting in to TN registration with a new number and using it for 2 years. Cost for conversion around Rs.2,500 in 1992.

Re: Ever sold a car (used) for more than you bought it (new)?

I recently sold my 7 year old Figo Diesel Titanium which had run about 74K km. Through OLX, I got few interested buyers, I had put a price of 2.95 lakhs. The first one to contact me sounded really interested, came down for a test drive within couple of days. He liked the car and offered a price of 2.7 lakhs. After couple of days wait, I closed the deal with him for that price. I guess it is a decent price for a 2010 April Figo in Bangalore. There are some dents and scratches all around, which I never bothered to repaint. And the front bumper had broken at the bottom. Hence the buyer justified his quote and I agreed :-)

The 2nd hand dealers were offering a price of 1.75 lakhs, so I feel what I got is a fair price.
