About the Tata partnership, condor has mentioned already.

Real costs are much higher - the sales pitch assumes the cost the electrical energy used for recharging covers everything. This does not include the cost of replacing the batteries, tyres and other wear items, which is significant and possibly exceeds that of the average ICE vehicles.

This is why our "paisa vasool" citizens don't buy the Reva or even electric two wheelers.

Re: Jayem Neo – Tata Nano EV to be launched on Nov 28, 2017

Just as Tata Ace was seen as a step up by 3-wheeled load auto drivers - when it was launched, this can be a step up for autorickshaw drivers. The first batch of 400 cars is said to be going to Ola. So the economy & cost balancing would be working out in their favour.

Nano regularly scored well in Ingress / Egress in OverDrive mega hatchback comparo. The car had image problem. Running as a cab, that image problem is irrelevant. It can be more attractive than an auto(rickshaw).

The Economic Times comes out saying TATA motors is sitting on 6.2$ billion dollars in cash reserves. These high cash reserves can be attributed to because Tata motors is 80% JLR.

Re: Jayem Neo – Tata Nano EV to be launched on Nov 28, 2017

Good friend DJ Bro came across a Jayem Neo (Nano EV) prototype on the roads of Coimbatore earlier today.

His impressions:

Quote:
I chased it for 10 kms on my Jupiter. At first glance it seemed like a GenX Nano base model with black bumpers. But what caught my attention was that it didn't have any badges, not even a Tata logo. Also, the car seemed to be riding slightly lower than normal, judging from the lesser gap between the wheel arches and the tyres. Only the driver was inside the cabin.
I looked carefully for the exhaust but it was missing. In fact, there was no exhaust note at all. I could hear a small, typical electric motor whine throughout the time I chased the rapidly accelerating prototype.
The car had an air-conditioning system.
When I checked out the instrument cluster from right behind the car, I was surprised. Boy! That was the most massive speedometer display I had seen in any car. Everything else was bunched up around the fully-digital speedo display. The prototype also didn't seem to have any sort of gearing system. But I couldn't get to check that more clearly.
Acceleration was super-brisk, and the driver was easily keeping up the pace with the Swifts and the Celerios in open traffic up to speeds of 60 kmph. It felt so weird and different to see a Nano run on the roads so quietly, without it's usual engine thrum.
I checked the whole car from front to behind and the sides for the charging port panel, but there wasn't any visible opening panel anywhere. Maybe it was because this is just a prototype, and the mass production model will come equipped with a clear, visible exterior charging port.

Re: Jayem Neo – Tata Nano EV to be launched on Nov 28, 2017

The charging point could be inside the bonnet at the front, where the petrol inlet is, for the traditional Nano.

It doesn't have to be visible, especially when you have ample opportunity to conceal it.

Re: Jayem Neo – Tata Nano EV to be launched on Nov 28, 2017

Any birdies chirping EV news ? As per the initial news we should have already seen some action with respect to this neo, but i haven't heard much.

I am planning to settle with a automatic city only car which is also economical, and trying to see if this is coming anytime soon

On an added note, if the car was riding lower than normal, maybe the added weight of the batteries has led to a reduction in Nano's impressive Ground Clearance. Also, I can see Driver Seat Belt Sign and Driver Airbag Sign in the tell-tale lights of the LCD Based Cluster. Also a Door Open indicator instead of just a Switched On Cabin Lamp as in the present car. Should it be assumed that Jayem Neo or Tata Nano based EV will finally get Airbags and go a little more upmarket on the safety front? Can't see any indicator for ABS though.

Re: Jayem Neo – Tata Nano EV to be launched on Nov 28, 2017

An update is here:
  • Jayem Neo (Nano) has secured Rs 1.24 lakh in government subsidy.
  • Neo will most likely make its debut with Ola.
  • Sources say Jayem will supply 1,000 Neos to Ola.
  • Neo is still under development and there is no deadline yet for the retail launch for private buyers.
  • Mahindra e20 and Tigor EV get the same subsidy amount.

Just out of curiosity, what happened to this Jayem Nano EV project? Could not find any recent news when I did a search on Google. Looks it's dead!

Nano probably cannot pass the upcoming crash test norms, hence might have been ditched. IF they had decided to make it compliant, cost of development would have shot sky high!
