Maruti Baleno Smart Hybrid caught testing. EDIT: Now launched

A Maruti Baleno with a Smart Hybrid badge has been spotted testing in Delhi, which suggests that Maruti could offer a mild-hybrid variant sometime in the future.

Except for the Smart Hybrid badge on the tail gate, the car looks identical to the facelift version of the Baleno. It has the updated front end with the new grille and bumper. The test vehicle also has dual-tone alloy wheels and ORVMs with integrated turn signals.

A mild-hybrid version of the Baleno is currently sold in the international market. It is powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine paired with Smart Hybrid tech. In India, the Baleno is available with a 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine that puts out 83 BHP and 115 Nm of torque and a 1.3-litre, 4-cylinder diesel that makes 74 BHP and 190 Nm of torque. While a 5-speed manual transmission is offered as standard, the petrol version gets an optional CVT. An RS, powered by a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine producing 101 BHP and 150 Nm of peak torque is also offered.

This means either the 1.3 diesel will die anytime soon or the 1.2 K12B will bite the dust. Wont make sense for Maruti offering four engines on a single model.

1.2 K12B
1.2 K12C - DualJet (if this is correct)
1.3 DDIS
1.0 Boosterjet

Are you even sure that it's a Test mule and not just a badge tacked on? I think Maruti wouldn't put the badge if they really were testing it.

Cheers!

I thought that too but considering it is HR-26TC car, I think it is a test mule like other Maruti Suzuki test mules bearing same kind of number.

re: Maruti Baleno Smart Hybrid caught testing. EDIT: Now launched

Maruti Suzuki Baleno Smart Hybrid with DualJet engine coming;

Maruti Suzuki Baleno Smart Hybrid 1.2 petrol will be available only on the Delta and Zeta variants next month, will come to other variants later.

Expect Maruti to introduce the new 1.2-litre K12C DualJet motor to other models in the near future, the Swift and Dzire likely to be first up.

Quote:
The Suzuki DualJet engine is essentially a successor of the K12B motor that is found under the hood of the India-spec Swift, Dzire and Baleno. The DualJet engine goes by the codename K12C and was first introduced internationally in the previous-gen Swift back in 2015.

This new engine betters the existing 1.2-litre K12B powerplant in terms of efficiency and emissions. This means, while this engine is BS-VI ready, it will also be more fuel efficient than the K12B which in the Baleno, delivers 21.4kpl.

The K12C DualJet is expected to also get redesigned intake ports, combustion chambers and piston crowns, oil cooling jets for the underside of the pistons, a new exhaust gas recirculation system and the Smart Hybird start-stop system. Sources tell us that the 1.2- litre DualJet engine will get the single battery Smart Hybrid system as opposed to the new dual-battery setup in the Ciaz 1.5 petrol.

Expect power output to be around 90hp at 6000rpm and a torque figure of 120Nm. In comparison, the current K12B develops 83hp and 115Nm.

Maruti's 1.2L petrol is already among the segment best, and it's going to be further improved? More power & supposedly more efficiency? Wow . Can't wait to drive it. One thing no one can accuse Maruti of is complacency.

I think they might quietly kill the 1.3 diesel once this is introduced.

re: Maruti Baleno Smart Hybrid caught testing. EDIT: Now launched

Maruti Suzuki Baleno 1.2 DualJet Smart Hybrid launched at Rs 7.25 lakh.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno has been launched with two BS-VI-compliant petrol engine options – the new 1.2-litre K12C DualJet with the Smart Hybrid system, and the existing 1.2-litre K12B petrol, which has been upgraded to meet the more stringent emission norms. Prices for the existing K12B variants of the Baleno range from Rs 5.58-8.90 lakh, while the DualJet Smart Hybrid engine is only available in two variants – the Delta (Rs 7.25 lakh) and the Zeta (Rs 7.86 lakh, all prices, ex-showroom, Delhi).

Maruti Suzuki Baleno’s price has gone up – the existing 1.2-litre K12B engine variants are now more expensive by Rs 13,000-20,000, while the DualJet Smart Hybrid variants cost a substantial Rs 89,000 more than the equivalent K12B variants.

Good that Maruti has taken the lead in launching BS VI, well ahead of the deadline as well as competition. But, cannot understand the reason for not launching in Alpha variant. CVT Variant might be taking more time in calibration of gear ratios, due to the bump up in power.

re: Maruti Baleno Smart Hybrid caught testing. EDIT: Now launched

That's good news.

We can get a BS VI car at just 20k more than a BS IV car.

Good job Maruti.

Waiting for the reviews of new Dualjet Dual VVT engine to know that 89k more for it is worth or not.

re: Maruti Baleno Smart Hybrid caught testing. EDIT: Now launched

According to the people I spoke to, most Maruti BS IV petrol engines can be upgraded to BS VI by some simple exhaust tweaks. So its not really a big task for them. Expect more BSVI models to roll out one after the other from Maruti's stable.

re: Maruti Baleno Smart Hybrid caught testing. EDIT: Now launched

So talking numbers on the new changes :-

BSVI is achieved at a price increment of just 1.7% for the Alpha Petrol

With the Smart Hybrid Variant,

we get an 8.2% increase in Fuel efficiency + an 11.5% increase in Power

for a 12.8% increase in Price.

Reasonable enough...
