Re: Tata Nano v2.0: What to add, retain and change if price isn't a consideration?

My thoughts are that they made it sound like a "cheap" car for someone who would look at it as an alternative to a motorcycle. It was a bit too expensive for a motorcycle alternative though.
Bells and whistles will drive the price higher.

The upgrades or mods you guys are suggesting will definitely make it a proper small car - you can justify the higher price and market it accordingly but they need to then position it appropriately.

I feel there still is a gap in the market today for that segment which they initially thought the Nano would fit in - before they figured out the price.

Re: Tata Nano v2.0: What to add, retain and change if price isn't a consideration?

Indian market is really sensitive and is driven by sentiments.
Take the example of Patanjali - "Patriotism" was the selling point.

Tata never used that to its advantage.
Tata's advertisement, till date aren't catchy.

Mistake or rather mistakes with Nano were many, the major one was the marketing of it as a "Cheap Car".

Nano was in fact a great car, test drove it multiple times, before buying my first car. Dropped it, just for its bad ride quality.

Indians though want everything for lesser price, will never go for a product which is called cheap.
Not to mention the fire incident - it was a real dent for the sales of Nano.

Another mistake Tata did and continues to do, is kill their own product.
They should learn from Honda, City has been there for more than 3 decades, and is a brand in itself (City mean quality), or even the Civic for that matter (since 1972 - is a favorite or enthusiasts & is mod friendly ).

Tata keeps killing its products, be it Nano, Indica, Aria, Sumo, Sierra and now rumors of Hexa as well (which brought down the sales by a huge margin & still Tata is mute).

Such approach of axing their own products will not help build a brand.

My 2 cents to bring back Nano,

1. Don't change the name - keep it as it is, that will help retain the brand value in the long run.
2. Better sounding engine - the old one sounded like an Auto
3. Have better quality checks - don't want another fire incident killing the brand image.
4. Go for crash test certification - to show case the safety of the product.
5. Improve ride quality.
6. Impact 2.0 design language - love the Hexa & Harrier which follow this.
7. Better advertisement.
8. Go Hybrid.
9. Bigger tyres - will help with aesthetics, safety, ride quality and grip.
10. Use premium colors - just because it is small & economical, does not have to look cheap.
11. Load it with gadgets - the Tesla way.

They should take queue from "Smart" car, to know how a small car can be made as a style statement.

I think they tried with salt- Desh ka namak but somehow this kind of advertisement always backfired Tata. Reliability and customer experience (showrooms and service centers) is something they should improve.

A 800cc engine (atleast) - a 1litre engine (great)
Auto transmission.
Power windows (optional)
Central locking

Rest I can live with!

Here is a render of what a future Nano should look like.

And a Nano that might have worked...

This is not to say that design was the only problem with the Nano, of course. But they have been mentioned already.

In my humble opinion, the only future Nano will have is EV. It is city friendly and needs a potent EV unit. I haven't heard much about the Jayem Neo since a while now. It will be a challenge to price the EV as the segment is tight and one would end up buying a ICE and still save few lakhs to spend on fossil fuels for few years to come.

Electric nano with 13 or 14" wheels, premium upmarket interiors. Use the Smart for four as the benchmark.

Platform needs a longer wheel base and wider track for stability, ride and handling.

Give it a hard targa top, with an active rollbar.

Proper nvh.

Short wheel base + narrow track is the main USP of the nano.

Hard targa top with an active rollbar for nano? audacious!

Re: Tata Nano v2.0: What to add, retain and change if price isn't a consideration?

My Nano V2 would be based on Tiago platform (JTP ).
  • Slightly short wheelbase.
  • taller than tiago with flat roof-line.
