Re: September 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

What has happened to the C-segment dispatches/sales?
  • Honda City = 1819 units
  • Hyundai Verna = 1738 units
  • Maruti Ciaz = 1715 units
  • Skoda Rapid = 816 units
  • Volkswagen Vento = 455 units
  • Toyota Yaris = 232 units

Aren't the numbers too low? Seltos effect?

Re: September 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

- Happy to see the Renault Triber do well. The initial hype should give it some momentum, Renault should be smart enough to try to sustain it. What’s up with the Kwid though? Is it because of the facelift being launched at the end of the month?

- The Harrier is yet another example of wasted potential. Tata should’ve taken a few more months to iron out the niggles and launch a sorted product. Currently, it just doesn’t have the finesse expected from such an expensive car.

- The Jeep Compass is another car that deserves to do better. Where is the Diesel AT (not counting the 25 lakh rupee Trailhawk)? Don’t screw this up, FCA!

- The XUV300 and Marazzo numbers are a little disappointing. I was blown away by the XUV300 when I took a test drive. Time for a price correction and variant re-jig?

- Happy to finally see a real challenger to the Brezza, in the form of the Venue.

- Maruti hit the bulls-eye with the new WagonR. The Santro, in comparison, is languishing. Hyundai definitely must’ve expected it to do a lot better.

- The Honda City, Civic and CR-V are segment leaders for this month (by a small margin though)! Hope this gives Honda the confidence to bring in more ‘real Hondas’.

The total C2 sedan sale is less than Venue or Seltos.
Among the CSUV, 5th most selling (XUV300) is still 500 units more than the most selling C2 sedan.
Hector despite its price and unknown brand has outsold the established players.

It is pretty clear from the past year or so people have moved to CSUV/mid-SUV/Crossover cars and given a miss to C2 sedans.
Blame it on price, VFM factor or just the bad roads, C2 sedans will see a downfall for months to come. BS-6 might help them as CUSV/SUV are not very economical with petrol engines. This is the only space C2 sedans can get back some share.
I bet most of the C2 sedans are selling in petrol version than diesel version.

Re: September 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

As usual, a great compilation over there Aditya. Thanks for sharing.

Considering that the figures shown in this compilation are mere factory dispatches and not the number of vehicles actually sold/ registered, I would say that the new entrants in our market viz., Hector, S-Presso, Seltos, XL 6 and Triber, have all managed to put up a commendable performance.

It is really disheartening to see none of the C2 segment sedans have managed to touch the 2K mark. Thanks to the plethora of MUV’s and SUV’s that are now available in the same price band or even lesser.

Hard work finally paid off to the folks at Renault camp. Looking forward eagerly for the sales figures for October 2019, where the actual market response to the 2019 Kwid facelift, can be gauged. But then it is festival season around and then we have the New Year and then the BSVI hysteresis. The market would stabilize and settle down perhaps only by July - August 2020.

Hyundai Kona total units sold to date at 177 units, weren't the yearly target set at 120? Or they have dispatched 57 units for test drives which will be funny

Re: September 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

More than anything, I really feel bad that Tata is struggling again!
Now I know that it's mainly because of the market slowdown but then manufacturers like MS, Kia, MG have reported good numbers.
The Nexon and Tiago although sold in decent numbers are nowhere close to their rivals.
Let's see if the Altroz can bring some change.

Jeep will become another Fiat if FCA remains least bothered about the Indian market.

Are the plans firming up for new City? Any dates?

Glanza is 2nd highest seller from the Toyota family! Soon it could be #1 too!

PS: Does Glanza ship from MSIL factory or TML factory? Hope its not double-counted?

500 units was the target for the first year. Its very likely they will increase this four fold given the traction! Very nice option for a 2nd car!

Re: September 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Healthy discounts on Vitara Brezza seems to have done the trick for Maruti. Even the S-Cross will see a slight uptick for next couple of months relatively.
The Ertiga's 2k odd reduction probably is that of top end versions which is drawing customers to Nexa's XL6. So nothing to worry about.

Tata and Fiat need to start worrying about Harrier and Compass now, KIA and MG have started their onslaught and it shows. The SUV segment does not seem to be that affected by the current slowdown.

Happy to see Renault's numbers going up for the Triber. If it becomes a hit, it will probably defy most people's notion that 1.0 litre petrol engines on such cars is a bad business idea.

Re: September 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

1. Why would a column wasted for HM/Mitsubishi? It is an insult to a cult brand "Pajero". Shame on you Mitsubishi to have a zero cars sold on a market like India.

2. Venue impact on Creta is very vivid. When Venue goes up by 1000, Creta looses 1000 in the last few months incidentally. Seltos is impacting as well. By less Creta numbers, Hyundai stands to loose in over all profit. Once you see Venue in person, inside and outside, you will easily get convinced on it especially against Creta.

3. Kia - big thumbs up! From nowhere to one in Top 11 cars in September! Kudos for their sincere attempt, hard work and respect for the Indian customer. It pays off. Ford, Toyota - Learn from this company.

4. Same goes for Renault with Triber. When I first saw the car in August in golden color, even before launch, I thought this is another hit in the making after Duster and Kwid. Renault learnt a thing or two in India, think and do things completely differently helps them in surviving in these tough times. Looking at Nissan's pathetic numbers of 295 units for whole of India in a month, Renault shows they are smarter and dynamic.

5. Maruti survives and helps Toyota to survive! Yes, you guessed it. Deduct Glanza and then one will realize how Toyota fare in this mess.

6. Fortuner below 1000 again, which is very unusual and Endeavour maintains whatever it can somehow.

Re: September 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

The Seltos is ruling the segment and how with over 50k bookings. I'm sure October will see close to 9-10k despatches for the Seltos. Hector on the other hand is throttled by the limited production capacity.

The Creta is seeing diminishing numbers due to the Seltos and the fact that a new model is coming next year.

It's a pretty good game plan by Hyundai. Globally, Kia is priced lower than Hyundai cars. In India, by pricing the Seltos higher than Creta, it gives room for Hyundai to price the 2020 Creta even higher than the Seltos, reclaiming it's crown.

Re: September 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Maruti market share:

Entry level - 83%
Compact hatch - 63%
Premium hatch - 40%
Compact sedan - 65%
Executive sedan - 25%
Compact SUV - 34%
Regular SUV * - 0%
MUV - 40%

The regular SUV segment has enough numbers now and Maruti can now enter and conquer.

*Excluded S-Cross from regular SUV.

Maruti reports Baleno and Glanza numbers separately. So it won't get mixed up.

Agree. Look at the numbers; other than Nexon with an 'acceptable' 33% YoY decline which is in line with other major brands of the industry, all other products have declined YoY by 60% or more! Personally, I believe the marketing team needs to take the rap for the current state considering the basket of competitive and well-designed products they currently have. Consider this: other than the initial launch ads, I have not come across any brand communication either on Hexa or Harrier (not including the variant/discount announcers). Hexa has a fair amount of user-generated/contributed content and I am surprised TML has not put them to good use; their social media presence is pathetic, to put it mildly.

Hope they pull themselves up; I have my eyes on Hexa, though not before next year. Wonder if it will be around 8-10 months from now...

Re: September 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

There have been few rumors that slow moving models are being produced in far lesser numbers due to slowdown and BS6 deadline!

This makes sense for models that don't sell well, cars like Brezza can't afford to slowdown since they don't have a BS6 variant ready with them. Smaller players will certainly wouldn't want to burden their dealers who might be running in loss already!

Diesel vs Petrol numbers would be interesting

Re: September 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Fiat is finally at rest, just a reminder that Indian automobile industry is extremely difficult to crack and you better be prepared at everything. Best steering? Nope, heavy traffic we want it super light. tank like build? Nope, too heavy to push when it eventually breaks down or runs out of fuel.

C Segment is attacked from above and below, the traditional C segment buyer is shocked at the onroad price of these vehicles nowadays. It makes sense to go for sub4m crossover SUV and Payless tax as well in the process.

After looking at Bolero & Scorpio sales numbers, I can only laugh at the condition of M&M execs , their newer product teams must be left fuming while Mr. Pawan Goenka secretly have a laugh, they are after all his first few projects.

Tata really should have focused on utility vehicles, the Sumo was wasted , remember the Sumo X2 concept? Oh boy!
