Scoop! 2020 Skoda Superb spied for the first time in India

https://www.thrustzone.com/2019-skoda-superb-facelift/

Rushlane claims the following -

2020 Skoda Superb Facelift India specific will feature a BS6 1.8-liter TSI turbocharged petrol engine putting out 180 PS that will be RDE (Real Driving Emission) compliant as seen in the picture while it was caught testing.

I was under the impression that the 1.8 TSI has been replaced by the 1.5 TSI ? Or am I missing something!

This is awesome news ( if true). The great 1.8 TSI is back.

re: Scoop! 2020 Skoda Superb spied for the first time in India

The 1.8L TSI is gone from all VW/Skoda cars. Replaced with 2.0L TSI and 1.4L TSI replaced with 1.5L TSI.

So this Superb on test most likely has the 190PS 2.0L TSI and not the 1.8L TSI. This is the facelifted car from the design of tail lamps and S K O D A badging.

This one got me really excited.
Skoda if you are reading this please do bring in the Octavia and Superb with a 2.0 190 HP TSI. We need that here. That will be a worthy replacement for our 1.8 TSI. It has its own cult following.

Agree, the 1.8 TSI kits are exhausted due to the recent price cut finishing off all IN petrol stock. Only 2.0 diesels are left.

This HAS to be the 2.0 TSI in 190 tune. Super happy to see Skoda take such proactive and aggressive measures, especially factoring in their long and complex supply chain.

re: Scoop! 2020 Skoda Superb spied for the first time in India

A completely OT question. These days we are seeing a lot of BS6 emission testing going on. Some cars have no camouflage and ony the testing equipment sticking out of the back while some have full comouflage with the testing equipment.

My question is isn't it unlawful to drive a car for testing purposes on public roads with the boot partially open and emission testing equipment hanging out of it? Especially in this case for the Superb, it is really looking kind of dangerous with all that contraption hanging from the boot. For example the driver won't be able to have a good view out of the back either through the rear windscreen or through the skyward facing camera. The rear parking sensors won't work either.

Don't be fooled by the 'jugaad' look around it. These RDE WLTP / NEDC / EURO-6 / BS-VI testing modules are highly robust but sophisticated mini-trailers which can be mounted on just about any sedan, hatch or SUV.

The tarpaulin is cosmetic and not structural

Extremely happy to hear that . Am sure the motor is even better to drive than the impressive 1.8 TSI. Good move by Skoda. That being said, they had better hurry up and ready the 2.0 diesel for BS6. As of now, it doesn't look like they'll meet the deadline which really sucks as they're adhering to stringent norms in Europe with it!

The 2.0L diesel is so important to the VAG group due to the sheer number of Skoda / VW / Audi cars that use it.

The current Octavia will go out of sale from April 2020 as the all new one will come in a few months (2020 year end) after that.

If you want a 2.0L TSI, it's pretty much confirmed the current gen vRS 245 is coming mid next year.

The all new one will mostly get the 1.5L TSI and not 2.0L TSI since they only have 4WD spec with 2.0L TSI and India getting that is almost next to nil chances.

Re: Scoop! 2020 Skoda Superb spied for the first time in India

This is the UK RHD spec Superb L&K specification as per the Skoda UK website. The chrome strips on the lower door moulding and between the rear taillights are a dead giveaway.

https://www.skoda.co.uk/new-cars/superb/hatch-l-and-k

As Skoda does not offer the 150 bhp 1.5 TSI in the L&K, it is almost certain that this is a 190 bhp 2.0 TSI. Of course it could be the 272 bhp 4x4, but let's not carried away .

Re: Scoop! 2020 Skoda Superb spied for the first time in India

Is there any reason we are excluding the possibility of this being a diesel? From what I have gathered so far, VW has only mentioned that they will exit small car diesels as the cost increase becomes prohibitive compared to the price of the cars.

As Vid & GTO have both pointed out, the rumblings from Skoda IN is that the 2.0 TDI is simply not ready for BS-VI certification. I would be surprised if they were already testing it in the real world.

Unfortunately, unlike the Octavia (boot lip spoiler in TSI only) there is no visual differentiation between the Superb TDI & TSI variants. So you could be right at the end of the day!

Is UK not having Euro VI? They have TDi engines for UK too.

It is but the problem is you have to homologate and test it for India BS6 norms.

Secondly the bigger issue is adding the BS6 hardware will increase the cost significantly. Case in point Compass Trailhawk.

The evaluation is whether it makes sense to spend money on homologating, tuning, testing for BS6 India then selling at a much higher price point making it out of reach for many.

This is why Audi announced no diesels and Skoda will have to be on their own if they decide to bring BS6 diesel engines.

I'm also guessing that the BS6/Euro6 VW diesels may not be suited for the BS4 fuel available currently.

There is a high possibility of the DPF getting clogged early and it is quite an expensive part. They will have to replace it under warranty too.

I'm sure it will require a lot of testing and changes to make a BS6 vehicle suited for BS4 fuels which may not pay off considering their volumes. Better to wait it out perhaps?
