Coronavirus: Mahindra BS4 vehicle deliveries maybe delayed

According to a media report, deliveries of BS4 Mahindra vehicles could be delayed due to a disruption of components supply from China. The Coronavirus outbreak has resulted in several plants in China to close down temporarily.

Due to a lack of tier-2 components, manufacturing and registering the cars before March 31, 2020 may not be possible. It is said that if the shutdown continues, Mahindra and other automakers selling BS4 vehicles could seek an extension in the deadline to register BS4 vehicles. The deadline expires on March 31, 2020 and only BS6 cars can be registered from April 1, 2020.

It is said that factories of more than half of the top 20 global parts makers are located in China’s Hubei province, the epicentre of the virus outbreak. It is unclear when production will normalise.

Is it a planned action to push BS-VI implementation date further to clear the unsold BS-IV stock?

Seems like Mahindra lags the most in BS6 upgrades. Every article speculating about extension of the timeline quotes Mahindra. Given that their sales are predominantly diesel, it will hit them the most so no wonder.

Mahindra revealed their BS6 engine plans in June 2019 itself. So it will be a matter of time until the supply chain issues sorted out. But if they are relying China for any critical components, and if they cant find an alternative, then it might affect their sales as not even the Chinese know when they will be out of their crisis.

They might have wanted to say their BS4 deliveries are delayed AND BS6 are delayed too.
That will help them to have better point in getting the deadlines pushed.

Add the current scene of automotive market in India and Mahindra will be able to put the Virus's psychological effect to Government.

P:S: Take Mitsubishi along in convincing!

Mahindra had better not even try asking for an extension, as it could end up in an embarrassing situation for them. The courts have shown very clearly that there will be no extensions - remember BS3 2 wheelers being sold at 50% discount??

Most manufacturers are already well-prepared, with some even starting the sale of BS6 cars. If one hasn't done their homework, they must pay the price.
