Re: 2019 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!

2019 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-13.-nissan.jpg

Great manufacturer worldwide but in India, it hasn't gained any great traction. To worsen matters, the poor after-sales support killed the brand further. Neither is the current cars on sale any good nor is the support from HQ (Japan) any great to improve it further. Looking at this attitude from the manufacturer itself, many dealers/service centres are shutting shops and moving to another brand. I don't see any future for this brand in India unless they come up with something magical in the coming months.

2019 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-30a.-sales-trend-nissan-11-to19.png

Drop is sharp since 2014 to an all-time low at 7,000 units in the whole year.

2019 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-30.-nissan.png

Nissan has nothing worthy to sell in India except the Micra, Sunny and Terrano which did manage to put a decent show since launch but the year 2018 & 2019 were royally bad for them - dismal sales. Not sure how the dealers survived month-on-month. Sometime in 2019, Nissan came up with a new SUV named Kicks - didn't help the brand though. Moved ~200-250 units a month. No AT option also doesn't help matters and Nissan should have offered a CVT variant at least at the time of launch but God knows why they didn't.

Micra, Sunny, Terrano all have seen a drop of 65-70% in sales over what it was in 2018.

2019 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-14.-renault.jpg

At Rank 7 in the sales chart and with a total of 89,000 units in 2019, Renault has managed to have 3% of the market share. Up by 1% from last year but a drop in 2% from 2016 where it was at its peak at 5%.

2019 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-31a.-sales-trend-renault-11-to19.png

The graph looks swanky with the up's and down's but a promising one if products are priced and made well. Recent launches (eg. Triber) and refreshes (Kwid) have helped the manufacturer sustain some sales numbers in its kitty.

2019 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-31.-renault.png

53,000 units for the Kwid is great for what it offers against the competition and Y-o-Y sales have dropped in 2019, the drop (20%) isn't alarming though and is a major contributor to the complete sales by Renault in India (60% share).

Triber the latest offering from Renault into the people movers (MPV) segment has started off with a health 24,000 units in 2019. Looking at what it offers the customer, I don't think sales will come down in the coming months - A pretty promising product.

Duster and Captur are slowly falling down M-o-M with no great effort from Renault to help them either. Lodgy - a nice spacious MPV with a frugal engine inside somehow didn't click well for the maker, dropping numbers to mere 500 units in the whole of 2019 and in 2020, it got discontinued too.

Re: 2019 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!

2019 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-15.-skoda.jpg

What Skoda is trying to do in India is of great doubt. Y-o-Y sales seem to be standing at an average 15,000 units from four cars on offer. All their offerings have seen an 8-12% drop in sales over the last year. Skoda is at the 13th position in terms of sales with just 1% market share.

2019 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-32a.-sales-trend-skoda-11-to19.png

The graph is consistent but nothing great for what Skoda is capable of. The downward drop has started in 2017 and I see no real effort put from the manufacturer's side.

2019 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-32.-skoda.png

Rapid and Octavia are the bread and butter for Skoda in India keeping their share in sales a 63% and 16% respectively of the total sales Skoda managed in 2019. Superb is doing well for its segment/price at 1.4K units. Their D-segment SUV, the Kodiaq seems to have gained decent traction and has kept an average of 1,800 units a year.

The brand needs to wake up and take notice of what and where the competition is and what needs to be done to come back to life. YoY drop in sales has been appalling as in the year 2012, Skoda managed to produce 34,000 units (21K in 2013, 13K in 2016)but since then it has been continuously dropping a lot and why is this drop not getting noticed by the top management surprises me.

Indian homegrown manufacturer sitting in the 4th place on the sales charts in 2019 with a total of 1.5 lakh units and 5% market share. Tata has a lot of growth potential and one of the manufacturers seriously looking at providing 'safer' cars to the country and also to explore the EV segment which is the new trend.

2019 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-33a.-sales-trend-tata-11-to19.png

The graph more or less flat with the hike as seen post-Nexon launch at the end of 2017 helping Tata get some numbers into its kitty.

2019 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-33.-tata.png

Nexon and Tiago are Tata's strengths in the game. Hexa was at one point of time but the drop it saw in sales in 2019 is alarming (70% drop). Hexa is one product that I want to see improvements in terms of sales than what it has been doing all this while. Tata needs to act fast here.

Latest entrant for Tata in the B2 segment is the Altroz - brilliant product based on a new platform, built well with good features should help Tata increase its market share in the coming months. Tata Harrier, a new launch in 2019 just like the Altroz too has gained traction (negative initially due to issues at the time of launch but Tata seems to have solved them I guess). At 15,000 units, it should improve further with Tata giving AT option to the market with the brilliant 2.0L engine from FCA should help matters easily.

Nexon with its recent facelift plus 5-star rating for crash safety has helped inn sales a lot. Priced well, frugal engines, comfortable and easy on the pocket too, is what is making Nexon's fly off the showroom floors. With Tata's interest in the EV segment, they have launched the EV part of Nexon too in 2020. Let's see how that performs in the months to come.

Bolt/Zest have been laid to rest IIRC and Tigor isn't performing as it should witnessing a drop of almost 55% over the last year.

Re: 2019 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!

2019 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-17.-toyota.jpg

Toyota = Reliability & Reliability = Toyota.

2019 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-34a.-sales-trend-toyota-11-to19.png

Standing in the 6th position with a 4% market share, Toyota has been performing consistently over the last few years. At 1.2 lakh units in 2019, a drop of almost 25,000 units over the last year sales. In mid-2019, Toyota announced that it shall be partnering with Suzuki to dole out new cars.

2019 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-34.-toyota.png

Innova Crysta and the Fortuner are the two main cars that are keeping Toyota in India. Get them out of the equation and Toyota can shut shop IMHO. Glanza, badge engineering at its best and priced slightly lower than the Baleno, could hardly gain any traction. I am not sure why would one buy the Glanza over Baleno unless one loves the Toyota brand.

Etios and Liva have reached the end of their roads and shall not be seen in future leaving Toyota with only one sedan in the C segment i.e. Yaris which too has doomed badly (72% drop over 2018).

The Premium segment consists of Prado, Camry, Vellfire (latest launch that is out of reach of most citizens in India) which barely manages to reach triple-digit figures clubbed. Prius is at a negligible point at 1 unit in 2019.

With Toyota focusing on rolling out cars with Suzuki just like the Baleno-Glanza fiasco, future products and sales look bleak to me (C'mon Toyota, you can do much better than this). It shall be up to Crysta and Fortuner to help the brand save its image in the country and help it chug along.

Re: 2019 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!

2019 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-18.-vw.jpg

Capable manufacturer but no proper efforts put-in to improve brand perception and increase its market share in India.

2019 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-35a.-sales-trend-vw-11-to19.png

At 1% market share and selling just 32,000 units of which 58% is because of the age-old car named Polo (GT TSI mostly the variant I feel). Kia managed to sell more than VW with just one car in hand - Seltos. The downward trend is worrisome to look at and hopefully, the management wakes up and does something to rise again.

2019 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-35.-vw.png

Polo is the only car that is selling well for VW consistently around 20,000 units a year whereas the rest are just pulling along. Polo and Vento, have become seriously old now in terms of design and what the product has to offer to the market. With the recent removal of DSG from the line-up and replacing that with a TC unit, time shall tell how well it has paid off.

Tiguan is VW offering in the SUV section (D-segment) in the 26-30 lakh bracket, is priced a bit on the higher side than its competitors which doesn't help matters well keeping the sales as similar to what it was in 2018 (1,200 units).

Re: 2019 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!

Maruti Suzuki, even after 30 years continues to have a near monopoly over the market! That shows the loyalty shown by the Indian consumers. Yes, their offerings don't have the best quality, nor lead the pack in terms of safety and may be overpriced, but they are frugal & reliable, and the service network is spread from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. Though a warning to Suzuki, please update that 1.5l Diesel to BS6, that was a big mistake by your management.

Hyundai & Kia have done really well. Despite having an ageing lineup, Hyundai offerings continued to pull buyers to their dealerships. Now with the i10 & Creta refreshed, and the new i20 incoming, rivals are going to have a hard time eating into their share. Nothing can be said about the Kia Seltos- Kia had done their homework really well and have gotten an A+ from the buyers.

I feel bad for Mahindra, the XUV300 and Marazzo were good efforts, if a bit too overpriced, but the rest of their lineup is seriously outdated. Dear Mahindra, please refresh them!

Tata is become a brand that I'm fond of. Building safe, well engineered cars, the Nexon has been quite the crowd puller along with the Tiago. Let's hope that with future launches, they do their homework well, and launch a niggle free product.

Honda- A disappointment. Nothing else.

Ford is now in a JV with Mahindra. It's a shame, considering that with the exception of the Ikon, 1st generation Figo & the Ecosport, none of their mainstream efforts were great. Please get that twin-turbo 2.0l Panther Engine for the Endeavour, or watch it lose sales to the Fortuner.

Toyota is happy selling the Innova and Fortuner and isn't willing to get more of their international offerings, a shame, considering how good they are (Get the Rav4). Instead now they are in an alliance with Suzuki, compromising on their QDR policy, and selling us cars that the complete opposite of the characteristics that made Toyota famous in India (safety and reliability).

VW and Skoda are another set of disappointments. Still selling us the same cars that were launched a decade ago. They may be solid, but they're too long on the tooth. Nevertheless, they continue to thrive with a few (including many BHPians) continuing to buy them, thanks to the in-depth engineering and quality. Sadly they've been so 'smart' that they've decided not to upgrade their diesel engines to BS6!

Renault is in its own niche- selling us quirky cars developed for India. Sadly, not the last word in safety! And will you please launch the Second generation Duster, with a diesel engine?

Fiat is a dead brand. The 1.3 Multijet is dead. Now only Jeep survives. Just. Please reduce the price of the Compass, my parents bought the Seltos only because the variant of the compass with all the bells and whistles was over 3 lakhs more!

Nothing much about Nissan & Mitsubishi. Let's hope the upcoming Nissan Compact SUV can help things. Mitsubishi seems to be in paradise, ignorant of the fact that they had literally ZERO sales in 2019! Wake up, and shake off HM!

MG is another success story. Despite a lot of Anti Chinese sentiment, they've managed to hide their Chinese roots by hiring a British Actor as their brand ambassador and saying British everywhere! Buyers seem to love the Hector, as it sits comfortably ahead of the Tata Harrier, Mahindra XUV500 and the Jeep Compass.

Re: 2019 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!

Am I missing something here, Renault is the only one with YoY sales on positive side. 2018 was 82368 2019 was 88869. The only car maker in India to have logged more sales than 2018

Re: 2019 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!

Hyundai with all its offerings is unable to gain marketshare. A market share of 16% +/- 1% in last nine years, whereas Maruti has gained 10% market share in last 9 years and has a 50% share overall. This goes on to show that the talk of Hyundai being a superior product manufacturer than Maruti holds no significant value in the buyers mind. The Indian mantra for Car buying seems to be "When in doubt, buy a Maruti".
