Re: Petrol vs Diesel sales figures, in the BS6 era! Petrol dominates

Mahindra's Petrol Cars contribution crossed 10% for the first time in FY2021.

- Mahindra sold 19,061 Petrol Cars, 1,36,469 Diesel Cars and only 10 Electric Cars in FY2021.

- Only offered in diesel, Mahindra's oldest workhorse Bolero was also the best-selling model for the automaker. Over 38 percent of Mahindra's volumes came from Bolero in FY2021.

- Similar to Bolero, the other Diesel-only models in Mahindra's portfolio are - Scorpio, XUV500, Marazzo and Alturas.

- Mahindra XUV300 emerged as its best selling Petrol model for FY2021, 47 percent of XUV300 sales are of petrol variants.

- Thar registered a surprising increase in Petrol variants sales. 19 percent of Thar sold in FY2021 had a Petrol heart! Thar was also Mahindra's second-largest selling Petrol car in FY2021!

- Currently, only 3 out of 8 models in Mahindra's range have a Petrol engine option.

Re: Petrol vs Diesel sales figures, in the BS6 era! Petrol dominates

Petrol is now the most preferred fuel even in SUV buyers.

Crash of the diesel segment:

- Three out of every five utility vehicles sold in the Indian market last fiscal year ran on petrol, up from about one in three the previous year.

- The shift is particularly pronounced in the entry-level SUV segment where the share of diesel crashed to 25% from 60% in FY20.

- The preference for diesel variants has reduced in hatchbacks (to 1% from 5%), sedans (6% from 33%) and vans (3% from 10%) as well last year.

- The demand for the petrol variant of Mahindra’s XUV300 compact SUV had increased to 45% in FY21 from 33% the year before.

- Thar, which is sub-4m, the gasoline (petrol) demand is a significant 25% of the bookings

Quote:
Higher acquisition costs of diesel vehicles, improved fuel efficiency of petrol vehicles and the lower price differential between the two fuels have wiped off the gains of the lower running costs from diesel
DIESEL preference still exist is certain segments:

Quote:
expected to remain relevant at the premium end of the market as it delivers higher power and torque. Diesel variants contributed 64% to the volume in the mid-SUV segment and as much as 94% in high-end SUVs in fiscal 2021.
Quote:
55% of the bookings for the recently launched SUV Alcazar came from diesel, while in the mid-size Creta, this was higher at 60%
Quote:
there are certain markets like Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab, where demand for diesel is particularly strong
Quote:
For Kia, there is particularly strong demand for diesel vehicles in the above-4-meter category, especially in the SUV and MPV segments
Quote:
for those seeking the SUV driving experience, diesel is expected to remain the primary choice.

Re: Petrol vs Diesel sales figures, in the BS6 era! Petrol dominates

I suppose Brezza will be the reason for this dramatic shift to petrol in entry level suv segment( sub 4m).
Same can be considered for sedan. Ciaz, Vento, Rapid are petrol only in post BS6 era.

Re: Petrol vs Diesel sales figures, in the BS6 era! Petrol dominates

From 58% to 17% market share: Why Indians don’t like diesel cars anymore?

Quote:
When diesel was Rs 20-25/litre cheaper than petrol in 2012-13, cars running on it accounted for 58% of the market. Now, people buy less polluting options, and experts welcome it.
Quote:
But now, with that difference down to Rs 7-9 per litre, according to an analysis of government data, the market share of diesel PVs has dropped to just 17 per cent in the fiscal year ending March 2021
Quote:
Between 2019-20 and 2020-21, the share of diesel cars in the market fell from 29.5 per cent to 17 per cent while the share of petrol cars rose from 66 per cent to 76 per cent.

CNG cars, running mainly in big metros, jumped from 4 to 6 per cent. The share of electric and hybrid vehicles also rose marginally.

Quote:
The high cost, low availability and low shelf life of diesel cars is making the customers switch to cleaner fuel options
Quote:
In many bigger SUVs, diesel continues to be the preferred option, but the trend is changing significantly in the small car segment.
Quote:
According to Vivek Chattopadhyaya, senior programme manager, air pollution control unit at the think-tank Centre for Science and Environment, “Much of the change will be visible when we graduate to Bharat Stage 7 norms (in the medium term), which would strive to bring fuel neutrality…”

Re: Petrol vs Diesel sales figures, in the BS6 era! Petrol dominates

2021 car sales by fuel type: SUVs drove diesel demand in 2021, trend to continue in 2022.

- In the first 10 months of CY21, 74.1 per cent cars were petrol-powered, 18.4 per cent diesel-powered, 7.1 per cent powered by CNG, and 0.4 per cent electric cars.

-Rising sales percentage of sport utility vehicles (SUVs)—from 13.5 per cent share in CY15 to 38.8 per cent in January-November 2021—has led to sustained diesel-engine demand

- In hatchbacks and sedans the percentage of petrol-powered models is increasing, in SUVs diesel engine is a preferred choice

-In the compact SUV segment, the sales share of diesel-engine variants is 35-40 per cent, but this rises to 55-60 per cent in the midsize SUV segment, and even upwards in the large SUV segment

- In Mahindra Thar, about 75 per cent sales share is that of diesel-engine variants

-Hyundai has recorded high demand for the diesel-powered Creta and Venue SUV.

Re: Petrol vs Diesel sales figures, in the BS6 era! Petrol dominates

Absence of Fiat Multijet 1.3 Diesel engine is the main reason for this. Petrol dominating so much in BS6 era as people don't have much option in small diesels now. Previously lots of cars from Maruti like Swift, Dzire, Baleno, Ertiga, Ciaz, Brezza, S-cross etc. where running on Fiat Multijet and bringing great numbers. Not sure if we will see small diesel engines anymore in future.
