Re: Your favorite engine and why?

In India my favorite engine would be the 1.8 TSI (from the Octavia)because of its stock power output of 177 Bhp and it's tunability.

It gives a decent level of performance in its stock output.

If you do a performance ECU upgrade , the performance level goes up to a respectable level.

Both my cars are powered by Fiat. A 1.3 Diesel and Fiat 2.0 Diesel. The latter is such a brilliant piece of engineering.

Re: Your favorite engine and why?

My choice would be the 1KD-FTV 3.0 D-4D available in the Fortuner from 2009 till 2016 and the LC Prado in India. It is a gem of an engine, almost zero turbo lag, picks up in almost any gear, very reliable and maintenance free, can run for kilometres and kilometres without popping the bonnet. In freezing conditions (with anti-freeze) one crank and it starts off without any fuss. Also at the same time for a large motor returns a mileage between 10-12Kmpl which is pretty impressive.

Re: Your favorite engine and why?

For me, two engines will make it to the list of the 'best'. They are:
  1. Hyundai's 1.6L U2 CRDi
  2. 1.3L MJD (preferred as 1.3L DDiS for the fantastic tuning done by Maruti)

I have the 1.3L DDiS for almost 2.2L kms and currently nearing 90K kms in the 1.6L U2 CRDi engine.

For me all this while the benchmark in diesel engines was the 1.3L MJD in the smaller cars and 1.6L TDi (from VAG) for larger cars but after experiencing the 1.6L U2 CRDi that has both performance and efficiency with a good degree of refinement, I have fallen for that engine. Never does it fail to amaze me how it deals with varying conditions be it - city traffic or highway, it performs without any issues. 100 marks to Hyundai for focusing on the refinement part which I stress a lot and this is one point that puts the 1.6L TDi engine in position 3 for me.

Coming to the 1.3L DDiS, what to say, this "the" engine that has made Maruti Suzuki what it is today, the market share that it managed to grab with this one engine is nothing less of feat that no manufacturer could pull off. That push in the seat post 2,000RPM was unbeatable for that period and at the same returning stellar efficiency was unbelievable. I don't think there will be a substitute for this engine.

K12 from Suzuki. TBH I haven't driven any car other than our Dzire. But I have sat beside a number of spirited drivers in different cars. Nothing less get the compromise between drivability and high end performance so right.

Re: Your favorite engine and why?

I have many favorites,

Mercedes Benz's 2.9 L 6 cylinder diesel, 3.0 L V6 petrol

Toyota's D4D 2KD-FTV (Old Innova), 1KD-FTV (Old Fortuner) and 1-GD FTV (2.8 L Innova Crysta and Toyota Fortuner)

TATA's 2.2VTT VARICOR Diesel Engine

Ford's Endeavour 3.2 and 2.0 twin turbo diesel (International version)

VAG's 1.8 TSI and 2.0 TDIs

Fiat's 1.3 DDIS which powered Maruti, TATA and Fiat diesel engine cars and 2.0 L Diesel engine which powered Jeep Compass, Tata Harrier.

Maruti's 1.2 / K12 Petrol engine and 1.6 Diesel (S-Cross)

Hyundai's 1.6 L diesel and 1.0 turbo petrol

I also love the Formula 1 V 12s, Ferrari's, McLaren's V 12s, Toyota's V8 and V6 engines.

but my most favorite engine layout is Subaru's BOXER engine, these engines are of different displacements and are offered in different state of tunes.

Your favorite engine and why?-boxerengine.jpg

At the heart of EVERY Subaru is the Subaru Boxer Engine; named for the horizontal movement of the pistons - much like boxers throwing punches. On this page you will learn why Subaru chose the Boxer engine, how it works, and the safety, performance and handling advantages it brings to the driving experience.

BENEFITS OF THE SUBARU BOXER ENGINE

· Flat layout allows engine output to flow directly into the transmission. This linear flow of power reduces engine components and inefficiencies, resulting in better fuel economy. Subarus are the most fuel efficient AWD vehicles in America, often getting better gas mileage than its FWD competitors.

· By lowering the center of gravity of the engine, you also lower the center of gravity of the entire vehicle. A lower center of gravity = more responsive - particularly when cornering or doing evasive maneuvers.

· Less vibration. The natural counter punch of the opposite piston cancels out unwanted vibration where inline and v-type engines require additional components to accomplish this.

· Safety. In the event of a frontal accident, the boxer engine's low center of gravity allows the engine to drop "below" the passenger compartment instead of in it

Re: Your favorite engine and why?

All may favourite engines are the ones that I haven't owned.
  1. 1.0 lit carburettor engine of old Zen. Responsive, reliable and frugal.
  2. 1.1 lit peppy engine of Santro Zing. Responsive, reliable and frugal.
  3. Tata 4SP engine on the first few generations of Tata 407. Very reliable and powerful workhorse with minimum maintenance. This was based on Renault engine.
  4. Hino engine on the Ashok Leyland trucks. Again very reliable and very well tuned. Just hear the engine idling and you will notice the difference from it's competitors from Cummins or Eicher. One of the best engine notes IMO.
  5. 1.5 iVtec of Honda. Do I need to explain?
  6. And yes, the old OM616 Mercedes engine produced by the then Bajaj Tempo. Very smooth (for that generation of diesels) and reliable engine.

The engine of my M800 was also frugal and good enough. If I see the engine power and torque numbers today, I don't believe in the performance I used to get. Same holds good for 1.0 Zen engine and 1.1 lit Santro engine too. But otherwise there is nothing much to talk about the 3 pot F8 engine in M800.

The M16 NA engine on my SX4 is very good in terms of reliability. It is fuel efficient too, for it's size and for a 1250 kg car. But it shall have been more responsive to throttle inputs. Though I love this engine, I can't say it is my favourite.

Re: Your favorite engine and why?

For me , Hands-down, it has to be the Volkswagen Group 1.6 TDI.
I have a 2012 VW Vento TDI with 177,000 Kms on ODO and still going strong. The drivability, power, torque and fuel efficiency of this engine is awesome. Further, no other engine comes close to this in terms of driving pleasure.

Yes, this engine got lot of notoriety due to Dieselgate & there is some some crudeness and sound above certain RPMs, but in terms of sheer driving pleasure, nothing beats it.

My personal favourite is the Palio 1.6 engine as tuned for the S10. Wonderfully responsive and super mid-range.

Re: Your favorite engine and why?

I would that thought that on an enthusiast forum like TBHP, atleast a few people would have mentioned the high-revving, super reliable 1.5 and 1.8NA Honda iVTECs.

Oh, I did not know that Hino is part of the Toyota Group.

Ashok Leyland had their own in engines long back (which are still popular with the small local Genset manufacturers. They also had Iveco engines, which were not accepted whole heartedly by the market. And then came the Hino engines, which are liked by the users. AL and Hino are together for a long time now and they were jointly developing the BS VI engine IIRC.

I came to know of AL offering Hino engines, when I read this on our State Transport buses in MH. The buses had an instruction painted below the driver cabin door, for the driver / maintenance staff. It read, "Hino engine, power steering".

For me, It has to be the 1.6L CRDI from Hyundai for its refinement, performance and not so poor mileage.
Our fluidic Verna(2014) has done 160000+ kms and the engine has never given us trouble till date and still going strongly despite being driven in the worst roads. This led us to buy a Next-gen Verna with the same engine in 2019 just before this gem was discontinued.

In the bikes, it's the madly rev happy KTM's 200cc.

Re: Your favorite engine and why?

The Skoda/ VW 1.8 TSI engine.. What a versatile powerhouse.

Can surprise anyone with a fuel efficiency range between 2.1kpl to 16.8kpl. It also has mad, mad potential to take it a powerful but restrained cat at 160bhp to an insane beast at or over 330+bhp, from the same 1.8 mill (through varying levels of mods).

One of the best engines I've been fortunate to experience.

Re: Your favorite engine and why?

The Honda 1.5 i-VTEC: it can be meditation and the next minute can unleash the hooligan in you! It's powerful and fuel efficient, that's added advantage, so much so my Honda City CVT delivers better fuel efficiency than my son's Grand i10 1.2 Auto both in the city and highway. I've been taking drives every evening and have learned to extract very good FE in the city: 11 kmpl (tankful to tankful) and above in the 'meditation' mode.
