Re: Your favorite engine and why?

I am a diesel guy, my favourites are

1. VAG's 2.0 TDI - Master of all trades!

2. Ford's 1.5 TDCI - Fun, fast & frugal

3. Hyundai's 1.6 CRDI - Benchmark for refinement amongst diesels and good performance too

4. VAG's 1.6 TDI - Loud but fast & fun

5. Maruti's 1.3 DDIS - Not very enthusiastic, but extremely frugal & reliable

Amongst petrols:

I find Honda's 1.5 ivtec & VAG's 1.2 TSI a bit overrated. (Totally personal opinion!). Ivtec specially had a very flat boring midrange.

Fiat's 1.4 T-jet (Abarth) - fast & lively, can put much expensive cars to shame

VAG's 1.0 TSI - Fun despite the small displacement as well as fuel-efficient

Coming motorcycles :

Honda's 250cc - Epitome of reliability and all round performance (for the segment)

KTM's 390cc - As reliable as our government, but no engine in its price range is as much fun!

Royal Enfield's 650 twin - refined, fast and most value for money twin cylinder on sale in India

Honda's (HeroHonda) 99.2 cc - reliable like a Toyota, frugal like a Maruti

Re: Your favorite engine and why?

My favourite engine is the 2.0 TDI from our Jetta. I am not a diesel head but that is such a capable engine. Not a fan of the 1.2 TSI but the bigger 1.8 TSI in the octavia and the 1.5 petrol in the city are also favourites.

Re: Your favorite engine and why?

My heart goes to the 3.0 litre engine of BMW which 530d and 7 series uses. Driven it many times and boy what an engine it is. Lovely for in gear acceleration and fantastic for the sprints. Apart from this i love the Vtecs from Honda and obviosly K12B from Suzuki as as both engine are peppy and rev happy. K12B specifically have a strong mid range and will put a grin on your face all the time.

Re: Your favorite engine and why?

Since no one has mentioned it yet; Duratech 1.6 16V. This Ford/ Mazda designed engine is peppy and fun to drive. It is also very well suited for mods.

Re: Your favorite engine and why?

The Fiat 2.0 Multijet in the Jeep Compass for the thrill, the torque surge that kicks in at 2000 rpm and if you pay attention you can also hear the turbo sing, both these are just lovely, it makes even boring commutes fun.

Re: Your favorite engine and why?

3L inline V6 diesel from BMW.

1.5L Vtec from 1st gen Honda City.

The 1.8T petrol engine of the original vRS (unreliable but what a punch).

2L 148 bhp engine of Cruze, no doubt it was called a diesel rocket/cruise missile.

3.2L diesel which came in current gen of Endeavour. In my opinion a pure beast, sporty sounding, very refined while cruising and one of the best released engine for SUVs in India.

The engine of the mighty E63 AMG!

There are many more brilliant engines around...very tough to jot them down under a single post!

Re: Your favorite engine and why?

Petrol: Suzuki K12M
  1. Top Class Refinement.
  2. Eager to rev and has a nice engine note high up in the rev range.
  3. Amongst other engines of the same capacity the engine has the best driveability.
  4. Very economical.

Diesel:

Peugeot TUD5. It's a 3 decade old engine and most people would have forgotten it. But I do have fond memories of my good old zen diesel.

I have three words to describe it : revhappy, reliable and economical.

Re: Your favorite engine and why?

All the engines mentioned below share the following characteristics: fast, frugal and reliable. I am a huge diesel fan since they are frugal and fast diesels don't need premium fuel like the petrols, so can be filled anywhere.

1) Ford 1.5D(Sold now)

2) VW 2.0 TDI(In possession)

3) BMW 3.0 Diesel(Had a short drive)

But if I had to choose only one, it would be the Ford 1.5D. It is extremely fast for the segment and can return above 20 kmpl even if driven in an enthusiastic way.

Other honourable mentions:

1) Mahindra 2.2 MHawk- I am not a huge SUV fan, it would have been my one of my favourite, had it been in a sedan(Friend owns it)

2) Ford 3.2D- FE low due to the weight(Had a short drive)

3) Skoda 1.9 TDI- Outdated now, but a legend back in the day(Sold now)

4) Mercedes 3.0 D in the W212- Though it is fast, it is not an enthusiasts engine like the BMW(In possession)

Re: Your favorite engine and why?

My favourite engines are all turbo diesels. I hate the petrol turbos for their poor FE and it is also recent compared to turbo diesels to our market.

1) Chevrolets 2L diesel in Optra, Cruze and Captiva.
2) Vags 2L diesel.
3) 1.3L DDIS in first state of tune.
4) 1.5L hyundai in first state of tune in verna.

If reliability is a factor, I shall place the DDIS> than all these above options. You can replace a DDIS new turbo for around 12k INR

Re: Your favorite engine and why?

My favourites are the 1.3L Multijet and the 1.2L TSI that powered the Polo GT TSI / Vento. I just drove an Indica Vista Quadrajet yesterday and I just love the way it picks up once the turbo spools up. I've also driven the Swift diesel before and that's when I initially fell in love with that engine.

The 1.2 TSI is also one cracker, just love the way it rushes once it's well into the meat of it's powerband.

Re: Your favorite engine and why?

Triton V10 on the Ford Excursion (as well as on other cars).

50 mph at less than 1000 rpm, and the vehicle was dead silent. Absolutely no sound at all. Effortless cruising.

Fuel economy might be a joke though.

Re: Your favorite engine and why?

1. Mahindra 2.2 M Hawk from the latest XUV avatar. Will outrun anything this side of 50L sold in the Indian market. Self attested.
2. 1.3L Diesel MJD from the first swift. After BS4 it just wasn’t the same.
3. Harley Davidson 1600cc 103 engine - It develops torque that makes bigger VTwins weep. Torque monster and sounds so sweet.

Re: Your favorite engine and why?

One and only 1.3 DDIS. I have a 12 year old Swift Diesel with one at 1 lakh 86 thousand kilometers and I know a lot of these at 2 and 3 lakh kilomters on team bhp as well as in the Ola/Uber's that we ride, its relentless. My car engine wise still drives and feels the same as it was at 50 kilometers.

It got Maruti to where it is now, if not for this Engine, Maruti would not have been sitting at almost 50% market share, shame it had to be stopped as I feel they should have got the 1.6 DDIS, brought it down to 1.5 liters and continued a decade worth of cars with this engine right from Ertiga to Brezza to Swift to whatever they could have launched later.

Re: Your favorite engine and why?

My favorite is 1.8 TSI on Skoda Octavia.

I read several good reviews about 2.0 TDi, but I didn't get a chance to drive it.

I like the 1.5 TDi as well, very tractable in the city in its DSG combination. The highway punch is gone after the emission scandal fix.
