Volkswagen Taigun spied testing in India

Mod Note: Our Volkswagen Taigun Report has been taken live at this link. Please continue the discussion over on the new thread. Thanks!

Volkswagen Taigun spied testing in India for the first time.

To launch after Skoda's Kushaq, some time in August /festive season.

Similar to the Skoda's SUV in size , it will have considerable differentiation to the exterior and interior designs.

Engine/Power-train ( 1.0/1.5L) / ( MT/TC/DSG) offerings will be the same as in Skoda's Kushaq.

Rumours suggest the Taigun will be priced lower (at a starting price of sub ₹ 10 lakh) than its sibling Kushaq with fewer variants on offer.

Taigun was showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo in a' closer ' to production form.

Quote:
The test model of Volkswagen Taigun looks quite similar to the test mules of the Skoda Kushaq, except for one major change – the taillight. The portion of the taillight peeking through the camouflage is the same as that of the pre-production Taigun showcased last year. Interestingly, the rest of the design isn’t too different from the Kushaq, at least when viewed from the rear and side in camouflage

While the VW SUV will launch after the Kushaq, the upcoming ' Premium ' sedan from VW will launch before its sibling from Skoda.

Re: Volkswagen Taigun spied testing in India

More update on VW TAIGUN:

- Taigun is all set to be unveiled in February ( expect a camouflaged media drive)

- Taigun will be positioned as a young and vibrant car, reflecting Volkswagen’s new corporate image.

- Taigun's three USP's - “Safety, drivability and dynamics.”

- No compromise in safety. The basic German DNA is intact

- Will be “Pretty similar” to the concept shown at the Auto Expo.

- Five things he likes the most about the mid-size SUV.
- Digital cockpit.
- Full-width tail lamps
- Butch looking front skid plate looks very good
- Body-coloured inserts on the dashboard which gives it a very unique personality
- Fifth would be the VW logo!

- 1-litre TSI engine with both manual and automatic gearboxes, and the 1.5 TSI as well.

- Likely to get the 'GT' badge

How will Volkswagen differentiate the Taigun from the mechanically identical Kushaq?

Quote:
The basic platform is the same but design wise it will be very different. In terms of exteriors, interiors, colour combinations, variant ant lineup and pricing, these are things we can play around with.
But the real differentiation will be the customer experience. The challenge for the team is to differentiate the VW experience from other players in the market. End of the day, that is how you differentiate a product. Most cars now have similar features but the whole experience and journey is what differentiates us.

Off Topic:

- Premium sedan from VW launching by Year eand

- T ROC is coming back ( possibility of local manufacturing)

- There’s a fourth SUV in the pipeline. ( Tiguan)

Re: Volkswagen Taigun spied testing in India

What I have seen from many potential/non-enthusiast buyers is that they go for cars which have many dramatic creases and cuts. They dont really realize the timeless design with minimal body works and elegant designs. I myself own a Polo and very much like the timeless design of the car.

When I bought the Polo, many of my friends and relatives were astonished and kept asking why I did not buy Swift/Baleno/I-20. After repeated explanation of Polo's build, its handling and timeless design, even now I get 'you are so stupid not to buy Swift/I-20/Baleno like me' looks.

Quote:
While the Volkswagen Taigun spotted on test looks identical to the one unveiled last year, the front bumper now features an additional horizontal slat just above the splitter.

Also, the full-width rear lighting unit is not seen on the test car, which means the carmaker is saving it for when the model gets launched
Quote:
Inside, the Taigun will come with all the latest kit like a digital instrument cluster and a touchscreen with connectivity features, among others.

Re: Volkswagen Taigun spied testing in India

ACI's take on Taigun:

- Taigun will be a conventional-looking SUV. with clinical design and an understated look.

- The nose looks similar to its larger sister, the Tiguan.

- A stylised ‘bull bar’ runs across the bumper and curls back around the fog lights.

-The chunky nature of the design also stands out when you view the car from the rear.

- At 4.2 metres long the Taigun isn’t very big on the outside, but space on the inside is more than sufficient.

- Sitting in the back more pleasant by using a higher seating position.

- The height of the central tunnel has been lowered, and the flatter floor

- At 4,218 mm, it is built on a long 2,651mm wheelbase, plenty of space for passengers between its wheels.

-The higher-spec versions will get powered front seats, and with the high seating position

-The large, 10-inch touchscreen on the centre console gets pride of place, and what should also delight Indian car buyers is the fully configurable digital instrument screen.( like the virtual cockpit seen in Audi, can be configured)

-The Taigun will also get VW’s new, high-quality flat-bottom steering wheel.

- Body coloured interiors to woo the young. Front and Rear styling will have a standout design from the crowd.

- will include a panoramic sunroof, leather seats, six airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), wireless charging and connected-car tech.

- At 330 litres, boot space isn’t massive, but the boot is wide and looks deep enough to hold two large bags or three strollers.[/b]

- Power-trains will be similar to Skoda's Kushaq ( 1.0L TSI in MT/ AT configuration and the 1.5L TSI in DSG configuration)

Maybe being politically incorrect, but I already don't like the 'old-fashioned' front end. Looks a bit fuddy duddy to me (for this segment), similar to the way the Venue looks oldish compared to the Sonet.

Everything else, including the panoramic sunroof (which the Skoda cousin doesn't seem to get) look great but 330 litre boot is small even by the sub 4 meter CSUV standards.

Positives:
* looks like VW hasn’t left out many features available with the competition. (connected car, wireless tech etc.). (Just hope it will come with ‘wireless’ CarPlay/android auto and usb type C )
* 1.5L TSI sounds amazing
* styling seems to be on point

Negatives:
* from the article it looks like 1.5 L TSI engine won’t come with a MT. Can someone confirm?
* body colored Interier seems to a bit over the top
* boot space is too less. But will wait to see the practicality.
* top variant most likely to cost 18l ex showroom. For a brand trying to make a splash in the segment it looks as though it’s priced to fail.
* color options might be limited(just my guess). Hopefully there would be black exterior paint option.
* personally not a fan of the two tone interior.

Re: Volkswagen Taigun spied testing in India

The boot space is too low for a car in this segment. Most sub 4m SUVs have larger boots.
The body coloured interiors should be optional IMO. The best part about VW interiors is their elegant and timeless design and this just looks a bit garish. Hopefully it is made optional or else it will be a love it or hate it look.

Re: Volkswagen Taigun spied testing in India

So Taigun gets the panoramic sunroof but Kushaq gets the ventilated seats? Interesting!

I'm not too sure about the body colored interiors - at least in this pic the red might have probably looked better with black interiors instead of white/beige.

Looking forward to this launch - this should be a nice city car and if it drives like a proper VW, this or Kushaq would be a much better choice over the Koreans IMO.

Re: Volkswagen Taigun spied testing in India

Looks good overall. I would just want the option to have an all black interior on at least the higher end variants. A jet black cabin is a hallmark of most Euro cars, especially those from the VAG group. Their high quality fit and finish typically shines with a jet black interior. Prefer that over the multicolored interiors shown in these pictures.

Re: Volkswagen Taigun spied testing in India

Does the Taigun come with the new slimmer VW logo inside and out?

Not sure if the new logo is reserved for new generation (read ID) series of vehicles only.

Smaller boot space will be a deal breaker for many of us. It is a practical and valid limitation for single car owners, why is it hard to understand to car makers. Taigun might end up like xuv300. i.e. xuv300 has Fantastic engine, excellent driving dynamics, superb safety features but sales are not at segment top, even after price correction. With this limitation, pricing will become a key factor again. 330 is just 10% more than most hatchbacks. Hope 330 is a typo and its actually 430

I've recommended xuv300 to 4 people so far, everyone loved the car but mentioned that smaller boot is a deal breaker(i must agree with them).

There is Beats badging in the pictures. Looks like the top variant is going to come with Beats speakers. Personally not a fan of the Beats sound profile. Looks like VW is trying to match or exceed everything Hyundai/Kia is doing. They have Bose, VW would have Beats.
