So is it the way of life of the rich that keeps the luxury segment at a check?
Its not just about affordability but value for money also and that is very important for many of us originally from a middle class family. When I was in US way back in 2003, I had a BMW 325i but it cost me less than 25% of my annual income (and I was just a mere mortal techie, no big hot shot). So it felt alright to go ahead and buy it. But when I moved back to India, the car was 2x pricier and salary was 1/2 so I didn't feel like buying it, even though affordability was not an issue.

Imagine, if 3 series cost as much as 25% of annual income of a techie with 7-8 yrs work exp, how many 3 series will sell in India?

According to the company, new launches including the introduction of the new Panamera contributed to the spike in sales. Till the end of March, Porsche is said to have sold one new car on average every week.

Fuelled by a record number of Macan sales, Porsche's SUV sales increased by 38% compared to the same period last year.

The sports car segment, which includes the 911, 718 Boxster and the 718 Cayman, also registered growth in the first quarter. Sports car sales rose by 26%.

I would love to see a breakup of the dealership-wise sales numbers. It is a traversty that Porsche Bangalore is shutting down despite being such a high performing dealership.

Also, the mindset of the dealers. We were looking for a Merc/BMW and went to the dealerships of both in Gurugram. While the latter were friendly, the Merc were on a high horse and did not seem to be interested. At that point we were looking at the 3-series/C-type. We finally bought a 5-series Beemer. The price difference between a 3-LWB and 5 was minimal. Later Merc called up three times, but the goose had flown.

Good to see Volvo in top 5. S-60 launch should only improve this

Re: Mercedes, BMW, Audi & other luxury brand sales in 2021

As per multiple dealers across India, the Audi Q3 and A3 would be launched in 2022. Surprised to see Audi delaying their "Bread-and-Butter" product launches.

No wonder they are losing the German Trio fight in India and even a new entrant company like Volvo is beating Audi.

The brand value that Audi holds in India has drastically fallen down in the past few years for reasons best known to them. Frankly speaking, the German Trio has become a "Duo" now. Bringing in CBU models won't attract people and they should really focus more on the CKDs and bring in their Mass-market models and take India seriously. Audi should really care about their sales figures otherwise such days aren't far away when Skoda would be better received than an Audi, in India...

Globally, Audi is pretty strong and doing well. Don't know what's wrong with them in India!

Luxury Car Retail Sales Statistics for FY2021.

- Mercedes Benz maintained its leadership in the luxury cars segment and commanded over 38% Market Share. It also gained a significant Market Share in FY2021.

-BMW suffered a decline of -41.8% in FY2021 v/s FY2020 and ranked second.

- Lamborghini was impressive and the Italian marque recorded 100% YoY growth in FY2021 v/s FY2020. Urus SUV obviously was the most popular Lamborghini model and led to the sales spurt.

Audi which was once the king of luxury car market now struggles to sell in triple digit numbers. I wonder what went wrong with it apart from dieselgate scandal which its parent company had gone through. Their lineup isn't exciting anymore while its competitor are doing well. Heck, even JLR is selling in triple digits in this 2nd wave of pandemic.

Lamborghini India doubles volumes in FY2021. Lamborghini is the only super-luxury carmaker to post growth in FY2021

Sales surge fuelled by strong demand for Urus.

No SUVs, Lack of Diesel Engines, No "Bread-and-Butter" models like the A3/Q3, lackluster model lineup, No proper sales strategy, Degraded Brand Value, Poor Dealership Network, slow to react in the market, being too close to VW and Skoda (80% same experience)... and the list goes on!
You name it, and Audi IN already has that factor, acting against it!

I firmly believe that Audi didn't lose the market due to excessive discounting rather it lost the German Trio league due to its "Slow to Change" Attitude which is present all throughout the Company, especially in its Model Lineup!
For e.g. The to-be-launched Audi Q3, which is an International Bestseller in its segment is already a few years old and it still hasn't been launched in India till date! And when it'll be launched in India, the Model will be already due for a Mid-life update, internationally! That's the problem with Audi IN. They aren't taking the Indian Market seriously for reasons best known to them.
Audi is a very capable brand with excellent products but in India, it has a different story, altogether!

Recently, I was talking to an Audi dealer and I was informed that Audi is aiming for the no.1 Spot in the sales chart, this CY End! I don't know how it is going to happen but ofc, it'll be interesting to see how Audi IN performs this year. It'll be good to have the Old German back in the game.

After all, "Jo Dikhta hain, Wahi bikta hain!". We see new BMWs, Mercs, JLRs, and now even Volvos on the roads, in our neighborhood, etc. We see and we have the urge to own such beautiful machines and we end up buying them.

But are we seeing many new AUDIs on the road?...

Luxury sedans from Mercedes still fare better than SUVs.

The recently launched Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB continues to be the best-selling model for Mercedes-Benz India, closely followed by the Mercedes-Benz GLE SUV.

Another development in 2021 for Mercedes-Benz has been the continued growth of online sales. Over 25,000 sales leads were generated online and 35 per cent of the total sales during the second wave lockdown months of April-May. Through the first half of 2021, the share of online sales stood at 20 per cent.

Pretty muted sales to be honest. Considering that they had a few volume launches like the A Class, GLA and the facelifted E Class during this time, I would've expected better numbers.
Maybe its the overpricing and lack of discounts that's pushing customers away?
I expect BMW to take back the sales crown once their supply issues are sorted.
