re: Field trials of the 4-door Mahindra Thar begin!

There seems to be a bulge at the C pillar. A design feature most likely. Some rectangular contraption at the left rear top corner. Wonder what is it? Also, there seems to be a rectangular cutout on the bonnet. What could that be?

Does it look like a convertible/droppable rear portion? The grab handle at the A pillar for the driver is pretty clear though.

re: Field trials of the 4-door Mahindra Thar begin!

For me as an auto enthusiast, a Thar is a Thar nothing more nothing less.

3 door compact off roader and the current gen one is the best it can get as on today.

5 door vehicle will no longer remain a Thar.

I just cannot imagine calling a 5 door vehicle a Thar. Never.

The Thar has it own unique identity and it should remain that.

True. However, I'll be okay if they call it Thar ARMADA.
If they call it Thar Plus, Thar XL or Thar S or whatever, itl be a big no for me. I hope Mahindra doesn't dilute Thar brand name for this.

I test drove Thar and Scorpio-N back to back and can't shake the feeling of driving a Thar. Though I felt it could have a bit more power for the highway, but mostly does the job. Fingers crossed, they should price this below the Scorpio-N line up.

My whole family is against the big SUVs. Hopefully, with this being a 5-door Thar and a real 4x4, they'll approve this

Completely agree. However, if you look at it from Mahindra lens, they just want to tap the market which is on the sidelines just because of practical aspect of 3 door which 5 door will fulfill. I am sure they have done their surveys. There are many households who cannot have 2 cars because of multiple reasons, parking space being one of them. I know at least few in my circle who want THAR but waiting as they cannot have 2 vehicles in their garage. Lets be honest, 3 door THAR cannot be the only car for the majority.

From branding persepective, I also wish that they don't call 5 door as just THAR.

No additional storage on the passenger side.

No push to start.

AC switches etc should be the same.

I am hoping they'll put a larger touchscreen now since the 5 Door won't have a Convertible and no water proofing is required for the sound system.

Also, is that a tweeter in the A Pillar?

THAR will definitely retain its unique identity

In all likelyhood Mahindra will christen the 5 door THAR as ARMADA

re: Field trials of the 4-door Mahindra Thar begin!

The current Thar is a more practical car than the previous Thar.
This 5-door Thar will be even more practical than the current Thar.
Those looking for practicality will buy the 5-door and those looking for hardcore off-roading will chose the 3-door.
It is always a welcome move to let the customers choose what they want rather than manufacturers do it.

There's essentially no difference between this and the 3 door Thar. Hopefully production models will have a larger touchscreen and more features!

But that will mean higher price and it will move closer to Scorpio N.

In my opinion the 5 door is aimed mostly towards those who weren't able to convince the family for a 3 door Thar.

And I think it may come with 4x4 standard fitment with optional diff locks. Again possibly to safeguard the Bolero Neo and Scorpio N 4x2 volumes.

re: Field trials of the 4-door Mahindra Thar begin!

It appears that this is the last prototype and will serve as both the Production model and the final prototype due to the extensive cladding. Now, there are a lot more test mules around too. So it seems that the launch is imminent (This is my presumption)

I hope they upgrade the braking system or improve it since the wheelbase will be longer and the size will also be larger. As of right now, I have pre-planned braking by a second in my Thar.

Bootspace at the front will be the same and from the spy-shots, it seems that Mahindra does not wants to change a lot of things on the Dashboard. Hope they give the following -

1. Apple Carplay and Android Auto - Wireless, right now it is wired only.
2. USB Type-C charger.
3. Better Braking.
4. Improved ride quality, a fellow member was able to point out the Pentalink suspension in the Test Mule so if Mahindra plans to stick with it, Thar 5 Door will have mature ride quality and handling.
5. Tuned Engines.
6. Petrol with 4WD.

Would like to respectfully disagree here. Armada sounds like a nightmare name for the 5 door Thar.

The SWB and LWB versions both have its pros and cons when it comes to offroading.

While the SWB version has better ramp over angle due to the shorter wheelbase and also a smaller turning radius, the LWB version will have its strengths too as an offroader such as better rollover stability during steep inclines, more practical space to carry gear.
Even the rampover angle limitation in an LWB version can be overcome with a higher suspension/tyre setup.

Hope Mahindra retains the Thar name for the 5 door version . Naming it anything else by moving away from the Thar branding will risk in significant loss of buyer interest/enthusiasm for the 5 door.
