When it comes to a car's looks, it grows on you after sometime. This is applicable to radiator grille too!

Would ugly radiator grilles dissuade you from buying a particular car?-img_20210328_093935.jpg

Looking at this face everyday, I slowly transitioned to finding Venue's radiator grille acceptable. These days, I even find it attractive!

Except for the BMWs outlandishly freak breathers, rest all are very palatable to me. I'm okay with the looks of Lexus, Genesis or even the old Innova but man what are those slapped to the face of them BMWs?!

Re: Would ugly radiator grilles dissuade you from buying a particular car?

Given we've owned the dated Liva, Etios, and the arguably not great looking S-Cross, and big grilled ES : I'm going to have to go with no unless it's really unbearable (and a couple of the ones posted above actually are!).

That being said, it would definitely help if there were options to fix up the grill : say an M3 grill conversion to the one in the standard G20 3 series.

For me, it depends on the color of radiator grilles and body color of whole car.

Black colored radiator grilles go well with dark colored cars. However, these same grilles in chrome finish would look ugly irrespective of the whole body color be it of any car.

Yes. Horrendous is the word.
Just the car being very capable cannot be used as an excuse to slap those horrendous grilles on the front. Not just the front but even the rear ends have begun looking outlandish e.g. the present Creta and Aura.

Re: Would ugly radiator grilles dissuade you from buying a particular car?

For me, the looks of the car is pretty important unless there is something strikingly great to ignore.

Look the Innova's of the world - we've never had a good looking Innova, but for what it does for a people mover with reliability in the used car market its a yes.

And there are a lot of factors that make us like a car and first and foremost is its looks.

While at the Mahindra service center for my XUV's service I really liked how the KUV's features and niche segment it fit into - but I could not digest the looks.

However, when I was looking for an used AT for my wife, I pulled out the better looking Hyundai i10 for the Suzuki A-star (never for its looks).

Re: Would ugly radiator grilles dissuade you from buying a particular car?

Voted "YES". A grille is significant enough to transform the front profile of a car. Although my #1 priority remains the engine, looks are a close second.

Thanks to the new Creta we are even having this discussion.

Voted Yes.

And agree with most of the examples here – say the Lexus, Genesis G90 etc. And some new Toyota models have extremely busy-looking front end.
But after seeing a few M3/M4s around, I am slowly getting warmed up to the new BMW face; would say looks better in person than on photos. I also feel that it looks much better than the (comparatively) less controversial X7 grille.

Re: Would ugly radiator grilles dissuade you from buying a particular car?

Voted YES, but among the examples given, only the Innova is ugly enough to dissuade me from buying it. The Creta's also looks pretty ugly, but not enough to prevent me from getting one. I don't find any of the other grilles ugly at all.

Nice compilation of cars with a grille not easy on the eyes and as pointed out, the easiest part to change. What gets me is that one would have expected this to have been sorted out by the company, especially premium brands, before sending them on the road, knowing how much emphasis people place on buying cars for the looks, especially the front.

Re: Would ugly radiator grilles dissuade you from buying a particular car?

While looks are important to me, it's very subjective. Another important factor is it takes time for one to get used to new design language. The more you spot on road, acceptance increases in majority of the case. A grille is one component but then there are many other which contribute to design/looks.
But one thing I can say for sure, the simple boring geometric lines are out of fashion. I like it and there are few others, but stand out design is the flavour of the season. Bigger bolder grille(or no grille), asymmetric headlamps, katana bumpers, cuts and crease, a car just needs to stand out.

Re: Would ugly radiator grilles dissuade you from buying a particular car?

Didn't vote on this because my answer isn't an unequivocal Yes or No. It would depend on other attributes of the car, like value, comfort, safety, reliability, performance. Example- Even though I'm not a fan of the Creta's looks, I haven't dismissed it entirely from my consideration set for all the positives it offers- great drivetrains (that 1.3T+DCT), comfort over the Seltos, ease of use within the city compared to the Harrier, better performance over the Compass etc etc.

All products have something going for them, even if their design is a hit or a miss. Guess the main question is this- are you buying a car for its utility, or as a showpiece/vanity purchase? In any case, you're the one sitting inside enjoying all its other attributes while the rest of the world cringes at your grille.

Re: Would ugly radiator grilles dissuade you from buying a particular car?

Voted Yes.

Looks matter and ugly grilles - large or small, are a turn off. It's more about the grille's design and how it gels with the rest of the elements that matters.

I can't stand the Hyundai Creta grille though - one of the reasons I'd choose the Seltos over it. I hate the new BMW grilles too. On the other hand, I find the large grille of the 2022 Maybach very classy. Again, Rolls Royce grilles are large, but I love them.

Re: Would ugly radiator grilles dissuade you from buying a particular car?

Voted yes.

I bought the BMW 3 series F30 outgoing model despite knowing the G20 is better in several aspects. Except for the instrument cluster. AND the grill, that comes on to the bonnet. I sold the F30, but should I buy a 3 series again, I prefer a used F30 over new/used G20 and mod it to bring the performance at par.

Similarly, the Lexus is a beautiful car until one beholds the front, so much so that if I see any on the road, I see the body and look away when it comes to the face!

I find the Audi A4 grills too big as well.

Simple, clean, understated designs work the best in my opinion.

VW Jetta, Polos have sweetest lips.
