Re: New "BH" series registration | For cars getting transferred from one state to another

Referring to this old article which says that existing cars too can be changed from state registration to BH number plate for private employees.

Has this been implemented at Mumbai MH RTOs as well? What's the experience like in converting from MH plates to BH plates?

I'd be careful to follow this path. Lifetime RTO taxes are already paid for personal registration and one would need refund of extra taxes if converting to BH. On paper it may sound easy but we know how system works in India. You should be absolutely sure about the process and pros/cons of BH series before taking the plunge.

Already there are reports about difficulties faced by owners during resale of BH vehicles. Some states (IIRC, Bihar) are even sending notices to BH owners, asking for multi years payment in advance.

BH is a good initiative by MoRTH but the state govt intent or the lack of it is causing issues on the ground.

Re: New "BH" series registration | For cars getting transferred from one state to another

Hi, Need some advice.

I am currently residing in Jaipur while my permanent address is from some other state.
I am looking forward to buy a used car but, for registration purpose I am required fo furnish a rent agreement.
Unfortunately, since I am living in a PG, same was not required and hence not available. What other options do I have?

Re: New "BH" series registration | For cars getting transferred from one state to another

I have paid road tax for next 2 years for my Nexon bought in Dec 2022. Tax amount was calculated by parivahan website as 17332. This was the same road tax which I paid 2 years back plus some other one time charges like registration hypothecation, RC fee etc.

Never understood the calculation of it how did RTO(Pune) arrived at this figure. Ex showroom price - 1039900.

There was one note on website after paying tax. Can anyone from Maharashtra who has gone through this process , please help me. Is there anything else we need to do after paying road tax online.

"Dear user, if you haven't done tax clearance after paying tax for a particular period, then please contact your RTO for
tax clearance to avoid any kind of penalty and extra payment "

Nothing more needs to be done after online tax payment, hope you have downloaded the receipt. You can ignore the message.

Re: New "BH" series registration | For cars getting transferred from one state to another

Has anyone tried for BH numberplate in Pune RTO recently? Are they allowing BH for private company employees ( who fit the eligibility)?

I am planning to buy car in next 2-3 weeks and want to register in Jan. Hence starting to prep for all documents

A friend did get BH-reg in Pune on his new car recently. HR of his company had denied providing the required letter initially but came around. I think the clause they had an objection to was certifying that this employee would definitely be transferred to an office in another state. It took him some time to get the letter from HR, but the BH-reg. as such wasn't a problem.

Check with HR of your company, that's where the issue is, not necessarily with RTO.

Re: New "BH" series registration | For cars getting transferred from one state to another

A friend of mine has a BH series car and has quit the company and moved abroad. Car is with his brother and they want to sell it off. Since he is abroad he is in India only for a very limited period of time. Car24 is discounting it at a very atrocious rate.
Questions -
1. Has anybody sold of a BH series car to somebody who is not eligible for such registration? Does anybody know the process?
2. Is it better to transfer the car to his brother who will then sell it at better price?
3. Or take the 50% discounted offer from Car24?

Car is a 2 year old top end Seltos that is run under 10K and is in Pune.

Unfortunately the resale process of BH registered cars is still not very clear. To answer the questions serially.
1. Best way is to approach the local RTO and get the required information. Pune RTO is updated on the BH registration process and should be aware of the transfer process as well.
2. If the brother is eligible for BH registration, it can be done but again refer to point#1.
3. I would not advise to take this option.

Re: New "BH" series registration | For cars getting transferred from one state to another

Thank you for the reply. I should have mentioned upfront that the brother is not eligible for BH. So it means that the car has to be re-registered as a regular MH?
We will visit the RTO to find out. However looking for feedback from somebody who has done this.

Anyone who is eligible for BH registration can buy the car and not limited to the brother. Pls note that state road tax (maybe on pro rata basis, not confirmed to be checked) will be applied during the transfer.
The car need not necessarily be registered in MH state, can be registered in any state or UT where the buyer resides with valid residency proof.

Re: New "BH" series registration | For cars getting transferred from one state to another

Has anyone here successfully resold their car with a BH series registration? Due to personal reasons, I need to sell my BH vehicle. To avoid the hassle of ownership transfer with BH series vehicles, I initially approached online platforms like Spinny, Maruti True Value, and Mahindra First Choice. Unfortunately, they all informed me that they do not deal with BH series cars. Currently, only Cars24 is handling such vehicles. However, it has been almost five days since their inspection, and they have yet to offer a price. They claim none of their dealers are bidding for my BH vehicle.

As a result, I turned to platforms like CarWale and OLX to connect with individual buyers. While I’ve received many inquiries, most people are unaware of the BH registration process. Upon explaining it, nearly all of them back out, despite my offering the car at a very reasonable price. One interested buyer has come forward, but they are unaware of potential challenges with BH vehicles.

To ensure a smooth ownership transfer, I contacted agents in Delhi, but none could confirm whether they could process a BH vehicle transfer. I also attempted the online ownership transfer on the official portal, but entering the BH registration number triggered an "Invalid Registration Number" error, indicating that the system isn’t designed to handle BH transfers yet. Visiting the Sarai Kale Khan RTO in Delhi was equally frustrating, as the officials there were unsure about the transfer process for BH vehicles.

Selling the car is urgent for me, and the buyer is willing to pay. However, I’m concerned that if they fail to transfer the ownership on paper, the vehicle will remain a liability for me. I’m looking for guidance on how to proceed and successfully complete this sale. If anyone has experience or knowledge about this issue, please help.

Re: New "BH" series registration | For cars getting transferred from one state to another

@AutoNerd and @kotirajendra, one suggestion based on my guesswork. It is understood that finding a BH eligible buyer for a resale may be really tough. Why don't you ask RTO folks/agents to convert it from BH to normal state series (like MH, DL etc.), most likely requiring pro-rated road tax payment as per prevailing rules for the remaining period of 15-years (which is the default registration period)? I am wondering whether they can do it very much like how we transfer registration from one state to another, except that states may be same in this case and refund from earlier BH tax should be less of a concern as compared to normal registration where we would have already paid for entire 15 years. It does implies that you may have to bear some monetary loss relative to BH-to-BH transfer, but then market rate of the car should anyway be based on normal road tax (and the next buyer may account for it if it is BH-to-BH!). If it is possible, it will at least bail you out of the current tricky situation.

I don't plan to sell my BH car anytime soon, hope these things will get ironed out by the time I need to

Re: New "BH" series registration | For cars getting transferred from one state to another

I purchased my car from Gurgaon on temporary registration and wanted to get the BH registration done in Patna where I'm currently residing.
I submitted my application before Diwali and till now I have been running behind the RTO with no luck. For the first month, they kept telling me that my application had been processed, I'd get an SMS and then I could visit them. After searching at multiple counters I found that they had lost my Form 60. Resubmitted Form 60 and then RTO needed a verification email from my company's HR which I managed to get delivered. In the email, HR mentioned that I'm an employee with the company and that the company has offices in 5 states which makes me eligible for BH registration.

Now, the District Transport Officer has rejected my application saying the HR should have mentioned "permanent employee", not just employee. I made HR send another email mentioning that I'm a permanent employee but they won't consider my application anymore. All of this is on paper and no tool is being used for tracking the progress, yet they want me to start the process from scratch because the email printout attached to my application has been marked as rejected.

I think I have had enough of this and would like to go for state registration at another state RTO because soon I'll be moving out of Patna. But, now the problem is in the temporary registration there is a mention of which RTO the permanent registration would be carried at. As Patna has been mentioned there I'm not sure if I can get the car registered at an RTO in a different state.

Is anyone aware of the process to get around this?
