BMW has rejigged the 5 Series lineup. The premium sedan is now available in 520d M Sport trim, priced at Rs 68.90 lakh (ex-showroom). The carmaker has also discontinued the 530d M Sport, 520d Luxury Line and 50 Jahre M Edition.

The BMW 520d M Sport gets a sportier-looking exterior. It features the M Aerodynamics package with front and rear aprons, side skirts, gloss black kidney grille and 18-inch alloy wheels. The car gets M Sport brakes with blue brake calipers and chrome exhausts.

Inside, the M Sport variant comes with M-specific door sills, floor mats, Sports seats and an M leather steering wheel; among other upgrades.

The 520d M Sport is powered by a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine that makes 188 BHP @ 4,000 rpm and 400 Nm @ 1,750-2,500 rpm. The engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The BMW 5 Series is also available in 530i M Sport trim. It is priced at Rs 65.40 lakh (ex-showroom).

The end of an icon. The 530d has been the default luxury sedan for enthusiasts from the days of the E60. It's enjoyed an insane following for 15-years, thanks to the creamy 6-cylinder diesel, fast performance, practicality & fuel economy. But ever stricter emission norms (BS6 RDE coming up in April), the decline of sedan sales and the beautiful M340i would've meant the death of the 530d. Actually, I think the reason would be the M340i & low sales only, as BMW will be continuing with the 6-cylinder 3.0L diesel for its other cars (SUVs, 7-Series etc.).

IMHO, this is the best 6-cylinder diesel and AT combination in the world. It even sounds lovely at high revs! Too bad the 5-Series no longer gets the engine although, again, the M340i more than makes up.

Can't resist sharing these. IMHO, BMW should've continued with the 530d for marketing reasons & to keep the legacy alive:

When I enquired on behalf of a friend, my SA informed me that the 6 cylinder diesel will only continue with the X5 and X7.

630d and X4 also loose this engine.

The 6 cylinder diesel will return in the 5 series for sure by the time the next gen G60 5 series is launched in India :thumbs up

Don’t know what to say other than :crying, TBH. The 530d was the epitome of performance for BMW India’s sedan line-up for a very long time! Will miss this beast of a sedan, well some might argue that the M340i is here, yes but the diesel economy is diesel economy and the 620Nm of twisting force surely hauls. And there is quite a lot different between a 3er and 5er…

The used car market was already limited with 530ds, this move will surely make them even more hard to get and not to mention the premium they will command in the market!!

The X4 in itself has been discontinued!

Any chance the reason is the same discussed in this thread?

Owning a 530d specifically is a part of my bucket list.
I have the loved the look of the 5(not the 3& not the 7).
The 2L shared from the 3 is an insult to the 5 series label.

I understand that numbers aren't everything. I know that the BMW 2.0 diesel revs much higher than the average oil burner. I am aware that the ZF 8-speed is near perfect. I agree that the experience is orders of magnitude better.

But still:
XUV700 Diesel AT @ 18L ex-showroom: 182 BHP and 450 NM
BMW 520d M Sport (I repeat, M Sport) @ 69L ex-showroom: 188 BHP and 400 NM

Hmm :disappointed.

The M5 CP has also been discontinued sadly. The 530d and M5 were every BMW fan boys top picks. End of an era.

For Indian enthusiasts, this piece of news is akin to that of the Polo being discontinued. Really hits the heart hard.

With this move, I believe, the prices of used 530d's are going to soar. So, potential buyers should get them pronto.

Used 530ds are already commanding insane premiums in the market.

I think this might also be them getting ready to launch the next gen 5 series in 2 years. They had introduced 520d m-sport with the F10 generation as well before launching the G30.

I agree with GTO. It is truly an Icon. I am so glad I bought the current gen LCI 530d a year ago. Such brilliant performance, practicality and luxury. I test drove the M340i a couple of days ago and boy that is another stunner (in Dravit Grey colour). I was blown away by the performance of it. Though the FE was around 6kmpl. That way the 530d trumps it in FE along with great performance. These two are one of the best sedans ever made! Wish I could own both :-)

Mods, thank you for the heart attack this morning when I saw my beloved 530d (Trie) with a RIP message on the TBHP homepage.

Has to be related to CAFE norms.

Why else would they discontinue a lot selling premium model, when they are going to continue with the engine anyway?

Sad but happy that Im lucky to get mine via used route about an year ago. Its the best I have ever driven. Hope it makes a comeback with next gen 5.
