Re: March 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Mahindra XUV 400, Mar '23 sales to dealership is 1902, but Electric Passenger vehicle retail sales according to FADA is 237. That is an inventory buildup of ~1600+, is this normal? Too early to read anything?

The e-C3 Mar '23 figures are 888 and 202 for comparison. Unfortunately there is no break of Tata EV sales to dealership, and the EV retail sales is also across multiple EV models. Would be nice to have same data for Tiago EV, all three started selling around same time.

Hello. No, what I meant was that HMIL is not a company that is surviving on the sales of the Tucson whereas the Jeep is surviving almost completely dependent on the Compass, with the Meridian, Grand Cherokee and Wrangler bringing in barely any numbers.
So it doesn't matter even if the Tucson is over priced and thus does not sell well because what matters is its presence as a flagship in the line up.
I believe all the products in that segment are overpriced. But the way the sales affect HMIL and Jeep is different.

Fair enough.
And now that you mention it, I just realised they haven't even mentioned the Grand Cherokee in the sales figures.

I wonder why, think it has been atleast one full month that the Grand Cherokee has been on sale now.

Re: March 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Many thanks to the team who has taken the effors to present the March month picture, hats off to the effort. Keep doing the good work guys.

Citreon suddenly seems to be the flavour of the month. Quite a significant jump to 4 figure sales from the meagre 3 figures only. The interest in the EV is quite revealing.

Honda still seems to selling the main bread and butter models. Surprisingly no new models being introduced and there seems to be no intentions to do so in the coming days as well I guess.

Jeep seems to never learn, they were never able to place a competitive priced offerings despite the technical excellence in a price sensitive market. The sales figures over the past couple of months have been showing the results.

Wasnt Marazzo discontinued by Mahindra? Can still see some sales, is this being even manufactured

Re: March 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

What happened to Alto? Down by almost 50%!

Hyundai slowly gaining ground and claiming its second position from Tata quite comfortably while Tata has two cars in top 10! Good competition going on there!

Could be just demo/ display vehicles which wont show up in retail sales.

Re: March 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

8000 Crysta's moved out of the showroom floors. Is the data wrong or is the Crysta such a strong vehicle in the market to be posing such numbers, despite of the Hycross being launched?
I mean, Diesel Manual only, barebones in terms of features, 7 year old model, 30+lacs price and still sells more than majority of the hatchbacks

Makes me wonder, did Toyota really have to launch the Hycross? I mean, they could've continued with Crysta for 3-4 years easily and still gain profits.

Edit: I guess those are Crysta+Hycross numbers combined.

Re: March 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

I have compiled a Sedan Vs SUV Sales Trend for the last year:

March 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis-sedanvssuv.jpg

The recent trend of SUV craze has made me wonder how bad is the Sedans sales. And then Hyundai releases new Verna. So I wanted to see for myself how the trend is and hence compiled this chart.

I noticed that, whenever there is an upward spike in SUV sales, the Sedan sales drops. The SUV sales is on an upward trajectory where as Sedan sales seems to be stagnated.

P.S: I have used the Body type above for the classification. What that means is the cars like PUNCH and C3 sales are included in SUV segment.

1. One of the biggest news for last month was TATA motors overtaking Hyundai in sales. But the team-bhp data doesn't seem to reflect that. Any reasons why that's so?

Quote:
Tata Motors has overtaken Hyundai to take the second spot in the sales chart for passenger vehicles in India, according to the Federal of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA). Maruti Suzuki remains at the top, having sold 137,201 units in March 2023, followed by Tata Motors which sold 46,847 units, followed by Hyundai which sold 45,703 units.
2. What does Innova crysta mean here? Is it Hycross or Hycross + Crysta?

Re: March 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Highlights for me-

Hector zooms past the Harrier+Safari combo for first time in a year or so. The facelift seems to be a hit with the masses. Tata's half hearted attempt at ADAS is another reason.

Verna top of the charts for first time in quite some long time. While City got in decent numbers, the Virtus/Slavia twins suffered the most.

My bad math skills at play!

But the difference is now negligible compared to the stark difference in previous months.

The entire jeep brand totals out at 650-ish.

Serious cause for concern, IMO.
Apart from Magnite and Kiger, there is no good product from Nissan.

For VW-Skoda, Kushaq/Taigun are simply overpriced wrt competition and not everyone is an enthusiast who wants a fast shifting gearbox mated to a lot of horses.

Jeep is extremely over priced for sub standard products. They dont have the reliability of the Koreans/Japanese nor do they have the brand value and engineering of the germans.

How come Virtus/Slavia suffered? Don't see the numbers reducing when compared to previous months. Verna might increase the total numbers in segment instead.

Verna-3755
Virtus/Slavia-3400(apprx)
City-2693

Sorry, how are we coming to this observation? City, Slavia and Virtus have done higher numbers than previous 2 months. For me looks like Verna has created additional customers in the sedan space. Though we need to wait and watch how these sedans numbers stabilise overall after few months.

On another note Kodiaq has hit 400+ units. Have they increased the supply or the demand increased?
