Re: What grinds your gears the most about your car? List your primary annoyance

Tata Safari Storme 2015:

1. I agree the first gear is to pull the vehicle from a complete standstill with max torque. But I wish the first gear throw could have been tall.

2. The overall gearbox does not have this slick shift as in a swift, per se. I knew this before getting the Storme.

3. The steering could have been lighter at parking speeds.

I had only two bad experiences with the car, one of them is a dead battery after the morning office run and the other is the thermostat issue where coolant leaked. Otherwise, it is a solid car.

Tata service for Storme was much better until Tiago, Harrier and the new Safari(Harrier+) were launched.

Hyundai Grand i10 :

1. Lifeless steering
2. Poor brakes
3. Terrible fuel efficiency
4. Costly spare parts (Push button costs 10k, Steering column costs 25k)

Re: What grinds your gears the most about your car? List your primary annoyance

Toyota Corolla 1.4 Diesel
- the terrible turbo lag

Maruti Baleno 1.2 petrol
- Sound insulation could be better. This engine needs to be revved to move quickly enough, and the engine note isn't something passengers enjoy
- Lack of auto-unlock sensor on the rear hatch. I have to remove the key from my pocket to access the boot.

Fairly minor gripes overall though, and I'm used to adjusting my driving style as needed. I guess I'm easy to please.

Re: What grinds your gears the most about your car? List your primary annoyance

Ford Fiesta 1.6 Petrol:
  • Poor legroom at the rear: I have a hard time sitting behind the front seat in my own seating position (I'm around 5'9").
  • The lack of a 6th gear (120 km/h in 5th is at 3300 rpm); the engine has way more than enough torque for a slightly taller overdrive gear.
  • The mud flaps scrape literally everywhere.

Skoda Superb L&K:
  • Piano black trim: too easy to scratch and throws up some very strong reflections at times.
  • A/C performance: takes a little too long to make the cabin comfortable in 35+ degree heat, especially at the rear.

Still, the pros of both cars absolutely obliterate these cons so I'm happy overall.

37 liters isn't so bad and 350 km isn't so bad a distance to plan a fuel stop. I usually plan my next fuel stop, right after my current one on highway trips, this is across cars that had range between 450 to 900 km.

Audi A3:

No android auto or apple carplay. This is the only thing I hate about my car. I need to have my phone in the cupholder with Gmaps on always.

Re: What grinds your gears the most about your car? List your primary annoyance

Two things about my Polo:

1. Dark Seat Fabric: Dark seat fabric gets really hot, and with no seat ventilation available in older cars, it gets very difficult getting in the car on a hot day.

2. Patchy Android Auto connection: This is not really a Polo issue, but longer cables keep dropping AA connection intermittently. Very annoying issue.

2022 spresso k10C dualjet
Poor Noise insulation in otherwise good package. Too much of tyre noise and ambiente noise enters the cabin.
For ambiente noise (other motorists noise), I have have installed self made door beads on the doors and that has blocked 90% of ambiente noise.
For tyre noise, I have changed the car tyres and put noise absorbing foam below car mat and that has solved 50% of the problem.
Engine noise is already negligible as compared to k10B engine.
Wind noise is also very less as I never drive above 90 kmph.

Re: What grinds your gears the most about your car? List your primary annoyance

Can’t we just all agree that the biggest gripe we all have now with any new car are these ridiculous speed chimes (at >80 kmph); and soul-irritating continuous alarm beyond 120?

I mean we were recently on perfectly laid tarmac on NE4 (more on that here (Spiti in 2 white Toyota Fortuners)), and the instrument cluster went on registering its displeasure even though driving within the speed limit It is beyond annoying, I really want to be convicted for killing this “feature”

I have said this before, pretty much against the tide, and will repeat again :I think these warnings are a good mental alerts for speed. One can have varying states of mind and body while driving over long distances and any slight "slip" over 120 kph may not be mentally registered but for the continuous chime.
On a lighter note, while entering a highway, the 80 kph alert comes up pretty quickly on my Verna 1.5 DCT. I find this enjoyable and analogous to the "seat belt off" or "passing through 10000 feet" chime once a pax airplane is airborne.

Re: What grinds your gears the most about your car? List your primary annoyance

Wow, Nice thread. We all love our cars but we do have our minor annoyances which we have to live with! Here are mine:

i20: As mentioned in the first post, the fuel tank is just inadequate for long drives. For a 500km drive, you'll be left searching for a fuel stop once you cross the 2/3 of the distance and range anxiety kicks in. Adding more scare here is that my variant (2015) does not even get a Distance to Empty meter and its all guesswork.

Santro: Love this small car for city rides but the major annoyance is that the car just struggles beyond 80kmph. It pulls super slowly and it starts showing its not comfortable beyond that.

2023 Verna: Love this car, I got this especially as it ticks all my major boxes and didn't want to have anything that would annoy me. But some very minor nit-picks are that Ventilated Seats setting does not retain. I have to turn on the ventilated seats every time, and if I forget, I'll be left with a sweaty back (Chennai Heat ). One more was the lack of Wireless Android Auto which is there in even lower variants of the same car, luckily I solved it now with a Carlinkit box (2023 Hyundai Verna Review).

Renault Kiger : NVH level. Kiger is a perfect car for its price. But its NVH levels are really bad. Specially while driving on highways at higher speeds.

Re: What grinds your gears the most about your car? List your primary annoyance

WagonR 1.1 -
Clutch bite point - No matter how many times you adjust the clutch, you cannot correct the bite point. When you leave the clutch pedal, the clutch engages abruptly causing annoying jerking. This was a common issue with old Maruti cars.

Gear shifts - slightly better than a Tata truck

Exhaust note - too plain

Alto 800 Bs6
Steering - worst EPS in any car, ever. Zero feel & feedback, no return to center action and the steering action itself isn't smooth. Surprisingly, WagonR has a much better EPS than Alto.

Space - too cramped inside, ingress & egress are a pain. Boot space is very limited as well.

Body roll - bodyroll is very prominent due to soft and slightly longer travel suspension. So much so that on a twisty road, rear passengers tend to get nausea. Here also, WagonR has much better bodyroll control due to stiffer suspension.

Brakes - pathetic

Understeering - due to skinny tyres and crappy steering, it always tends to understeer.

Low end torque - 3 cyl F8D is a sprinter in city and highways, but on very steep inclines, the lack of low end torque becomes glaringly evident. In comparison, 4 cyl F10D in WagonR feels like a diesel engine, oodles of torque!

Grand i10
Steering - feather ight, steering action is very fluid too. But it lacks any sort of feel or feedback.

Ground clearance - too low. Alway's have to be mindful to not to hit the underbody. Alto & WagonR feel like mini-SUV's in comparison.

Brakes - too sharp bite when you take out the car in morning. Just a tap on the pedal and it applies 100% brake force. It can catch off guard people, who are not aware of this cars nature.

Fuel efficiency - 1.2 Kappa is a fun engine. But FE is painfully low : (

Rear window line - it's too high, making rear passengers claustrophobic.

Reliability - Not as reliable as Maruti when it comes to electricals and electronics.

Gen 1 Figo TDCi
Diesel clatter - sound insulation isn't that great, causing a lot of engine clatter to filter into the cabin. If you are used to the silence of petrol cars, then this will feel annoying.

Omni MPFi
Engine heat - since it's engine is placed between the front seas, the cabin gets really hot. No amount of heat insulation is enough to solve the issue. Omni desperately needed an A/c version.

Yeah, I know I'm supposed to list the single most annoying thing about each car. But what to do, some cars have multiple equally annoying things about them, that hamper the driving / ownership experience
