Lots of doubts raised in past about accurary of ACI figures. Overdrive figures are supposedly reliable but they have not road tested Petra. They have 4 year old data. Fiat Petra manual claims top speed of 185 kmph in 5th gear. (I guess 171 kmph in 4th). Never driven at those speeds yet, so cant provide first hand information.

Yup even I don't trust these auto mag figures.. but I feel Petra is atleast as fast as the other two cars if not faster (don't wan't to start a war here, just what I felt after driving these cars) and the 100 Itlian horses defanitely mean something unlike the Korean ones!!. By the way the current car I drive is my Dad's Mondeo Petrol but sadly I can't afford one....

Correction here. It says "permissible" speed 185 kmph.

I assume its the 1.6 V Baleno
Then I'll go for the Ikon..
- looks mean with the front end treatment (fogs, air dam) , great handling

Baleno - a stock one looks very bland to me. I know abt Maruti network, engine, reliability etc etc but the Ikon just looks & feels better.

The testing of ACI is a bit hay wire but expect the car to do 185 ish with ease.
Our Palio has done 165 very easily and there was loads of reserve power.
BTW, should not the Palio 1.6 have a higher top speed as opposed to the petra?

Well, i'll pitch in with my biased report!!
I Had the same choices in front of me- Baleno/1.6 Ikon & Maybe petra

Fiat after sales etc sucks soooo much that the perta went out of the window shortly after the thought

The 1.6 Ikon is very sport et all, but i have never been very comfy with it under braking, the Nxt has improved in this area though. Ford Service- hmmm to not too sure about that one

And then I went and bought the Baleno - Jet black, and Immediately put a set of Alloys with 195/60 on 14" rims (Any larger rim size and lower profile, it looks awesome and your ride comfort & spine take a severe beating!)

WHy BALENO- Well the Ikon is small, its basically a 4 person car. You can fit 5, but they wont be comfy all the way to pune, leave alone goa

The engine kicks some serious ass, an almost flat torque curve gives you amazing drive in 2nd and 3rd. I have hit a 100 in 2nd with the ac on!
Decent FE- i'm getting 9 in Bombay traffic 13.5 on the highway run to pune

The handling is decent, it has the power operated Sideviews along with the Power steering & windows all for 6.1 on road.

And i am planning to Mod it, and whatever work you do on a maruti is gonna be cheaper than on an Ikon, esp with maruti offering the baleno for rallying

Ok, so it looks a bit uncle like, but its overall performance cover for that, plus with a proper set of alloys that can change too. Also wait for a decent aftermarket tailight cluster to appear and then check what will happen to the rear end.

Hey Abhay,

IMHO if i had to buy a car at that price i wouldnot even consider the Ikon as it is now dated and interiors are plain. It looks smaller then the Baleno. As far as modifications go you can check out Icemans Baleno and the post in Modifications and Accesories TCing a Ikon.

Hey revhedd,
There is this black Baleno by Team FS which had nice taillight cluster/cover.
It looks good and elevated the rear look of that car completely.Maybe you should try that.

Anyways, its the Baleno for me too.The reasons are obvious and nearly all of them are stated above. The Ikon is good too,but not as good as the Baleno.
