re: Indigo Airlines sues Mahindra for its BE 6e model name EDIT: Mahindra renames it to BE 6!

Its a 'nice' PR strategy for both companies involved, whichever way the result goes.

Those who haven't even followed EV or BEV launches will now know

But hey, any PR is good PR, isn't it.
What makes it even funnier is that it's a second time for Mahindra after this equally ridiculous objection from Hyundai: link (Hyundai drags Mahindra Renault to court (over the "Sandero" name))

Shakespear must be rolling in his grave now. Its million dollars now for a name.

Mahindra Design and marketing team must have had a huge horse vision when they decided to name the vehicles. I personally feel there should not be any number to identify any vehicle, gives the feel of a qaidi (convict). Its time for the lawyers as well as the PR guys to scratch their heads real hard and come out of this tangle. Surely Indigo is not going to part with their identity. So whatever publicity or interest the EVs had generated waits to be seen if it drops down hard or increases with the negative publicity.

While it is quite petty for Indigo to sue a car manufacturer (unless Indigo plans to get into the car business which is highly unlikely), I am not sure if Mahindra is doing a good job on naming their SUVs, What is with names ending with 'OO's? which is then followed by '3XO' and now 'BE 6E' that is pronounced as 'Be 6E' and 'XEV 9E', I would have simply preferred 'Mahindra 6E' and 'Mahindra 9E'.

World over using letters and numbers is preferred. A name like Indigo or City doesn't stress the company name and help its visibility. Some companies have stopped using iconic model names and moved to letters.

re: Indigo Airlines sues Mahindra for its BE 6e model name EDIT: Mahindra renames it to BE 6!

Did I think Indigo when I heard BE 6E ? Big Yes, probably because I often travel with them.

But, that's just me. Unless there's significant evidence of consumer confusion or intent to mislead, this might just be a case of over cautiousness on Indigo's part.

It's highly unlikely that Mahindra would have been unaware of the potential issue of using 6e. A company of Mahindra's scale would not take such a step without considering potential ramifications. This is more of a calculated risk.

But what stops them from being more original with their branding and designs ? When it comes to price to performance, Mahindra's easily tops charts at least in India. If those EV's deliver on performance and quality, customers will embrace them even if you call it a Green Mango (a node to Indian roots and eco-consciousness). Take Apple, for example- sounds like a fruit selling company, but they are one of the most valuable tech companies in the world.

re: Indigo Airlines sues Mahindra for its BE 6e model name EDIT: Mahindra renames it to BE 6!

How stupid on Indigo's part. Simply because, "who cares".

If anyone cared, Tata's would have taken Jaguar Sanitaryware to the cleaners. But they happily coexist and no one cares.

I, as a regular customer of Indigo, and possibly a future Mahindra customer, "I don't care"!!! Or lets say I dint even notice all these days that "6e" belonged to Indigo.

Honestly to Indigo and Mahindra, specially to Mahindra, "6e" sounds like the name of a printer. It sucks. Please take this wonderful opportunity presented to you and give the car a better name. It doesn't stick. I still cant remember the exact name given.

And Indigo, no one gives two hoots about "6e" when they book/board/de-board a flight. I am pretty sure none of the well read members of this forum cared about "6e" until now. You would have had a point only if the car was called "Indigo". But alas thats not the case.

The only people to benefit in this entire journey are the lawyers in Delhi, who would charge a Mahindra a day on both sides.

On Mahindra's Response:
Absolutely valid and to the point. Mahindra has a fair chance on winning this. Thats why classes exist in trademark. Duplication is permitted. Very hard and long drawn process to win.

Over a decade ago, I was faced with a similar legal notice on a trademark that I hold which was named similarly to another trademark in a different class. Since it was only a year old it did not mean big money, but a lot of work had gone into it.

The law was very clear on this, different class and kind of business, very good chance of me winning this. Thankfully, I had the best advice from my lawyer, change the name and buy your 5 years worth of sleep. Easy to get a new name now and concentrate on work. Was a good decision I took, by keeping my ego aside.

Slightly nitpicking but it's not 'Jaguar' sanitary ware. It is common error made . It is actually 'Jaquar'

But overall, agree with your post that it is stupid on part of Indigo to have dived into this '6e' thing. Nobody actually cares. Neither did it cross my mind when I heard the name of this car- which I cannot recall fully now.

Also, agree with some other posts that Mahindra should have not gone for these complex nomenclatures just to sound sexy...I mean 6E.
XEV would have been exponentially better and fitting.

The sanitaryware company is Jaquar and not Jaguar.

I think Indigo's goal is not to stop Mahindra at all, but to show everyone that they are prepared to sue even a big company like Mahindra for (supposed) infringement of their trademark.

Not sure if Tatas settled their claim against Indigo. From the very start Indigo laid a path of trademark infringement. Not sure they can use the call sign assigned by a regulatory authority as a trademark. Will be interesting to watch the lawsuit in case it does not get settled amicably!

I want to file suits against everyone using my car's registration number anywhere.

Conversely, I think Indigo is scared that Mahindra may enter the commercial airline space and with a tagline like, 'BE6E, and FLYSE!'

All in all, whatever be the outcome, both companies would stand to gain more reach and publicity!

re: Indigo Airlines sues Mahindra for its BE 6e model name EDIT: Mahindra renames it to BE 6!

Looks like somebody in Indigo's marketing team tuned into the Mahindra BEV launch function in bits and pieces, and saw that the BE 6e is fighter jet inspired and the interior looks like an aircraft cockpit - hey how can they launch an aircraft with the name 6e? Let's sue them.
