Re: Tata Altroz facelift caught testing; New details revealed

If 70% of Altroz buyers are first time buyers, then their current engine lineup looks alright. The 1.2 Revotron is alright for first time buyers.

But, for people who are upgrading from another hatch, this engine is hardly an upgrade. The features must be, but, not the engine.

I am hoping, Tata will launch the Turbo petrol too. If not the GDi, then at least the PFI. And there is no need for the stripes, the racer badge either.

Also, they haven't completely given up on the Altroz EV. Vivek Srivatsa told Business Standard, that they will launch it when it can "deliver strong range, performance, and cost parity with ICE".

I am guessing, if space and ground clearance was the issue, they are waiting for some battery tech, where less cells can pack in more.

Interesting. Despite the hatch segment shrinking, it's still expected to be a one-million-plus market. And the premium hatch sub-segment within the hatch segment is growing.

They should rename it to Tata Afsos. A visually stunning package inside and out, let down by its powertrain options. Afsos.

Skoda Kylaq, here I come.

Any addition to the variant after launch would hardly make any difference to the sale numbers. Prospective customers for the Altroz would go for the car now, after which, any changes to the variants hardly matter.

Few observations :

1 - They should have squeezed in a DCA variant within 9.99 Lakhs, it would have brought in more footfalls to a rather dying segment

2 - I keep telling my wife, it's difficult to "facelift" the Altroz and I think I'll stand by it. I miss the Original Alloys & Headlights

3 - Am hoping the lower variants will at least get darker interiors. Am tired of OEMs providing white / beige seats in Indian market.

Re: Tata Altroz facelift caught testing; New details revealed

It is not that the power output is bad, it is just that the engine characteristics across the revv range is below average, this engine cannot compete with Maruti-Suzuki engines from 2 decades ago, the NVH characteristics are extremely poor and have no place in a modern 8+ lakh rupee car.

Tata has screwed up big time on their ICE line up, I am guessing they were hoping for an all EV line up by 2030 which is not making sense in the current scenario, their EVs are also challenged by established Chinese EV manufacturers now and they are caught between a rock and a hard place, I do not see these issues getting sorted out anytime soon based on the below observations
  • 1.5 GDI is taking forever to be launched
  • 1.2 Hyperion is not offered on the Nexon or Altroz (Is Tata not confident about the engine?)
  • Hardly any marketing since the Curvv launch on the GDI engine
  • DCA paired with their petrol is not as reliable as one would wish for
  • Tata should have gone for the 6 speed torque converter from Aisin that VW and Mahindra are using
  • Petrol Harrier and Safari will have a tough time competing with XUV7OO with the puny 1.5 GDI for the size
  • Too many software and quality issues reported on new cars

Tata Altroz CNG to get an AMT soon.

Quote:
Altroz CNG AMT launch expected in the next couple of months
Automatic variants make up about 25 percent of Altroz sales
AMT is already offered with Tiago and Tigor CNG

Why would they do that when they have invested 500 crore in a plant to make dual clutch transmission through Tata Autocomp at Chakan in Pune?

I can think of the following reasons
  • Dual clutch AT as such is a complex piece of tech that none of the manufacturers have got right, Volkswagen group has struggled for better part of 2 decades, only recently they have made DSGs slightly more reliable after all these decades of experience
  • Moreover, this tech is prone to more failures in our dusty, hot and stop/go conditions
  • Many Tata DCAs have reported problems and total failures within a few months of ownership
  • Aisin Torque converters are proven, reliable and relatively well tuned and fun to drive compared to a Tata DCA

Re: Tata Altroz facelift caught testing; New details revealed

What TATA is doing is playing it safe. Keeping it close to the ground as much as possible. Which is to keep the car fresh for long term. For this, they will have to introduce new variants or engine options.

Looking at the strategy, the sales figures doesn't justify facelift every three years. So, this facelift will have to run for another 6 or so years. They will have to introduce the turbo in later days to keep to fresh.

What we don't realise in this forum is the target audience. TATA's audience are mainly first time buyers and those who want to travel from point A to point B.
So to me this launch makes the most sense when we consider the sales numbers.

Re: Tata Altroz facelift caught testing; New details revealed

A diesel automatic was the need of the hour in scarce hatchback space. Tata lost another chance at being an exclusive player. It would have added much needed volumes to the Altroz brand. Also why not offer the diesel engine in the Nexon tune for the racer variant?

True, the petrol engine is the one area with major scope of improvement.

Pardon my query but from a price-point perspective Kylaq is far more expensive than the Altroz. Only Kylaq Classic is available at sub 10 lacs. The other point being Kylaq is from a higher segment. While there would always be overlapping between segments, I doubt a Kylaq buyer would even evaluate Altroz.

Because I own both, the 1.0 TSI and the 1.2 NA Revotron. The TSI is in a different league altogether, the Kylaq will literally run circles around the Altroz.

Diesel AT is what is missing. This would have completed the lineup and given them an edge.
The car looks overall much better.
