BMW 520D,530D,530D HIGHLINE Launched

German luxury car maker BMW today introduced new variants of its 5 Series sedan priced in the range of Rs 36.9 lakh and Rs 46.8 lakh as it looks to strengthen its presence in the country.

The new variants, BMW 520d, 530d and 530d Highline powered by diesel engines, will be additions to its existing petro variants BMW 525i and BMW 530i.

"The BMW 5 Series is in the luxury Business Class car segment, and it is our goal to continue providing our customers in India with the highest standards of all-round quality, safety, and perfection to ensure the highest levels of comfort and luxury, BMW India President Peter Kronschnabl said.

The company which started assembling cars in India last year had sold about 1,400 units and is targetting to sell 2,000 units this year.

It had increased production capacity of its Chennai plant from 1,700 units to 3,000 units per year on a single shift basis with an additional investment od Rs 3 crore. It had made an initial investment of Rs 110 crore.

Now this is good news in the morning.can someone see the difference in strategies between mercedes and bmw.mercedes just want to sell numbers.make money and thats just about it.with the launch of the 530d highline, bmw is showing that they want to make a name in the market.they now have the most powerful diesel in the market.and that too at a great price point.and they now have features that mercedes can only dream of.even if its for bragging rights but stuff like night vision etc. show that bmw take the indian market with more seriousness than mercedes.the snobbish attitude of mercedes of throwing the bare minimum at the indian market is what is taking it down.

Another blow to MBIL, just when their E-class sales picked up thanks to the E220CDi and E230... BMW dropped the bomb once again !

Excellent move by BMW and hats off to their proactive-ness in the India market. The 520d will bring in greater volumes and now with the increased capacity BMW is really getting aggressive. It takes some guts to discontinue your highest selling model (525d) so early in it's lifecycle, but bold move nonetheless.

Although I think it's still too early for the 530d to be stepped in, its a monster no doubt and probably brings better margins into the company as they charge you 2-3 lakhs more than the 525d but both cars have the exact same engine and components! Just an ECU remap means more green$$ to their bank account.

The 530d was introduced to increase the gap between the two diesel engines, but i think introducing the 525d in just a highline version would have worked better. BMW should have saved the 530d for later once the E320CDi comes out.

Would be intresting to see the pricing and spec levels...suprisingly the article doesnt mention the 523i, has that been discontinued too?

I wonder what will happen to the 530i now which was already facing stiff competition from it's diesel sibling.

Now if only i can source an engine remap to turn my car my 525d into a 530d without paying the extra cash would be a sweet deal

Well now this is a very very tough choice a customer has to make, i guess!
The 320d highline costing 35lk, a customer of this range, wouldnt mind spending an extra 8lks for getting an even better and bigger model - the 520d! yes, yesterday i got a call from the local BMW dealer asking me if i have finalised any car and what my take is on the 320d, and when i told him that i am waiting for the new A4's launch, he said "Sir now we have a new variants in the 5 series - 520d, 530d and 530d highline, and the 520d is only 43lk onroad, and it also has the iDrive that u want!"

Now for me it wont matter, as i am only looking for a car in the below 30 range, and might extend to 35lk for the a4. But ppl who have the 35lk segment in their mind, then they would surely go in for the 520d! it has the iDrive, so doesnt miss out on the basic luxuries a car of this segment should have, i think.

8lk extra for a car of the next range in BWM = ROCKING!
Mercedes Hai Hai!

Fantastic move by BMW. That just shows they dont rest on their laurels but keep introdcing the latest products. They are very serious about making a mark in this country. The 530d is one of the finest diesel cars around it was always popular even before BMW set up shop in India. A true driver's car with amazing torque, this one is a winner for sure.

Mercedes have a lot to think about now.

God bless competition...the 520d is surely going to give the new merc variants a run for their money. The 525d was the most exciting diesel i have ever driven..i can imagine what the 530d will feel like..

It just a matter of time before they bring in the 335i to take on the a4 3.2fsi.

Was just wondering, Would the 520d mean more mileage and lesser power compared to the current 530d?

The 520D is going to make the 5 series, which is already the best seller from its class, even more popular! That's some pretty competitive pricing and a lightning fast response to Merc's E220. 530D? You bet. More power is always welcome. I just hope the price bump is reasonable keeping in mind that it is, after all, the same engine.

Looks like they are preparing to take over the mantle of India's best selling luxury brand from Mercedes. The current gen E-Class is not a match for the 5. DCIL needs the all-new E, but that is still a good amount of time away.

I am pretty sure it would be so. The 520d is a 4cyl diesel.
BUT, it's almost as quick as the E280CDi ! So what BMW is doing is, giving the consumer an E280cdi at E220cdi price

This is great news. A perfect and timely response to the E220CDI. Wow. BMW is totally onto the game here. First the updated 7-series and the 3-series worldwide, and the 520d in India.

Thats a fantastic move by BMW , the fanship is going to grow wider and deeper .
Its going to give a real thrashing to Mercedes's popularity.
The star is going down and the india is turning out to be a hot spot for born motor wild people.

thanks for the links.

The ones you posted are for the pre-facelift 525d. The one we get here is the facelifted ones with 197ps now.

The two best diesel remaps are by DMS and Hartge. Both of which turn the 525d to a notch well above the 530d by giving it 600nM+ of torque and a lott more bhp too.
it almost meets the performance figures of the 535d ! Minus the 2nd turbo.
