With economy chugging along nicely and stock markets chasing new highs in anticipation of explosive growth despite high fuel prices and no voices emanating from any direction, I wonder how many still feel that fuel prices will come down.

Petrol price crosses Rs 100 in Rajasthan - ET Auto

JAIPUR: Fuel prices in Rajasthan shot up on Monday to record high and crossed Rs 100 per litre, with the price of extra premium petrol in Sriganganagar clocking Rs 101.54 per litre and that of normal petrol hitting Rs 97.69 a litre.

In Jaipur, petrol and diesel prices climbed to record highs of 93.22 and Rs 85.29, respectively.

Rajasthan has the highest VAT rate on fuel in the country with petrol and diesel attracting 38 per cent and 28 per cent respectively. The price hike forced transporters and the retailers to appeal to the government for reducing VAT which is the highest in the country.

“We met the chief secretary and urged him to reduce the taxes so that the general public doesn’t suffer,” said Sunit Bagai, president of Rajasthan Petroleum Dealers’ Association, after the meeting.

During the lockdown period, the state government had increased VAT on petrol and diesel by 10 per cent each.

‘Urge Centre, state to keep prices between ₹70-80 per litre’

Bagai said that now that VAT revenues from fuels have crossed last year’s levels, the increase in taxes should be withdrawn.

The high fuel prices are also making goods costlier at a time when people have suffered erosion in their income due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We urge both the Centre and the state to reduce taxes and keep the prices between Rs 70-80 per litre. They can make tax adjustments by raising taxes when crude price is lower and vice versa” said Suresh Agarwal, president of Federation of Rajasthan Trade and Industry.

While in Sriganganagar the normal petrol price is Rs 97 per litre, it is Rs 82 the same in neighbouring Punjab. “It gives incentive to people residing border areas to buy from Punjab or any other border state where the rates are lower,” said a dealer. Rates are highest in Sriganganagar compared to other cities in the state because of transportation cost as the fuel is supplied from Jodhpur and Jaipur depots.

All of us are accepting fuel price hike with grace. Anyone visiting a petrol pump these days and refueling are actually serving nation by paying taxes and not paying for actual fuel. The current government has given us an amazing platform to serve the nation.

3. Take your helmet in your left hand and wallet in your right hand

There is no point in discussing fuel prices these days. No one is even perturbed that ordinary people are paying through their noses. Transport sector is reeling under losses and in my city Calcutta, many public buses have stopped plying since it has become untenable due to high fuel prices. The funny part is that day light robbery is going on and we are now conditioned to bear and grin it !

Diesel is majorly used in the commercial sector and the cascading effect of high fuel prices can be seen already. It is frustrating that we are paying almost 65% taxes on fuel when the nation is still reeling under the effects of the long lockdown due to the pandemic.

It pinches more when you know that Brent Crude is still under $60 and that the neighboring countries who buy oil from India are selling at substantially lower prices despite being less populous

We are not paying 65% taxes on fuel, rather 65% value of total amount goes into taxes (e.g. Rs. 65 tax on Rs. 35 product is almost double the product value hence it is roughly 185% tax).

The total tax we are paying is whopping 150% to 200% (depending on location) of fuel prices Rs. 28-31 per litre (Fuel Price after Processing - Ready to send to Petrol Pump).

Newspapers should print front page headline in big bold letters : "200% tax on fuel", maybe then consumers will wake up, that in current scenario, when people are trying to avoid public transport and despite many job losses/salary cuts/unemployment, government is taking them for a ride (pun intended).

Very Important: The Petrol been Sold in India from End 2017 has 10% of Ethanol been Mixed with Petrol. Been Ethanol is a natural Fuel (as made from Sugar and starch) and very well can be mixed with Petrol without any changes and also has no PM (Particulate Material) Pollution.

However - the catch is Ethanol is priced at just Rs 47.89 per Litre, but is mixed in Petrol and the given rate is combined rate as been sold to consumer

It means that if your car go for petrol Tank Full of say 30 Litres - then in actual your car will get 27 Litre Petrol and 3 Litre Ethanol - but the rate charged would be the price of Petrol only - means you have to pay price of 30 Litre Petrol.

There is a absolutely no point discussing this. Even if it crosses 200, we would still have to buy and use. Be it any govt. And govt is aware of this milking cow.

Fuel has become excellent source of indirect taxes for the government now. It affects the most the salaried people who actually can't escape on income taxes. Govt is taking advantage of other burning issues happening in the country.

May be it is time to take control in our own hand and go for EVs with own solar panels installed.

While it is the epitome of atmanirbhar mobility to run your EV with electricity generated off your own rooftop solar panels, it is an option that is available to a minuscule number of car owners. Most urban dwellings hardly have the space for such space consuming equipment.

Most people would have to make do with overnight charging at home, ongoing intiatives to provide charging points on highways etc. Besides, the tipping point for EV adoption could be the 10 lakhs rupee price point. Once usable EVs become available at that price point, a lot of people could break free from fluctuating fuel prices.

• Parking fee for EVs implemented locally but with an upper limit of a maximum 50% of the full price
• Access to bus lanes
• Company car tax reduction reduced to 40%
• No purchase/import taxes
• Exemption from 25% VAT on purchase.

EV incentives supporting EV adoption in India:

• Tax the hell out of citizens on crude based fuels so they are forced to adopt EVs.

In times to come, we will look back to applaud the creative genius of such strategies - one simple step for us to reach the very same goals that Norway needed complex strategies towards!

Don't see how EVs solve anything. If there is widespread adoption of electric cars (it's a big if), the government will charge tax on electricity to recover what it feels it'll lose in fossil fuels. The problem isn't fuel, it's that we don't have the gumption to hold our elected governments accountable. The yellow vests protests in France were in response to rising fuel prices and cost of living. We're a little more fatalistic in our country, and we'll just shut up and bear it. Our government and more importantly our billionaire class knows this very well, and therefore nothing will change.
