How did you arrive at the 4L figure? All diesel engine variants are sold at a premium of ~1L today. And there are talks that there is handsome margin in these additional 1L. Even if TATA prices variant to variant at 1L premium, I do NOT think this is going to cost above 3L. If Tata wants to play it safe, they can reduce the premium to a 50-75K and then price the diesel.

I was talking about the fully loaded version (to consider the maximum cost) petrol version which costs about 2.70L onroad. Hence the D-version could be around 3.75L on road.

Contrary to popular belief, diesel cars aren't sold at a premium. They are priced higher because they cost more to make. The manufacturing cost of a Euro-IV compliant diesel engine is double the manufacturing cost of a Euro-IV petrol engine.

I remember seeing some internal presentation from M&M on Team BHP where the whole cost of the Quanto engine was quoted to be INR 79K which is a 3 pot 100 bhp engine. I am sure that the Nano diesel engine would surely be lesser on cost given the lower power rating.

In terms of the Quanto engine costs - Rs.79 K was given, but I think this would have been a very preliminary estimate - fact is even the Bill of Materials (BOM) cost of the quanto would be higher today, and this is without the conversion cost and margin! Common rail pumps and other proprietary items from the likes of Bosch are pretty expensive.

Tata Nano Diesel NOT coming to the 2014 Indian Auto Expo.

Tata’s focus at the Expo will be on the electric power steering equipped Nano Twist and the Falcon range of upcoming cars.

It is not due to technical reasons, but due to market positioning. Nano's target market(!) does not need a Diesel, so the additional overhead in producing and servicing Diesel Nano will not be viable. Can we expect an Automatic Nano before the Diesel Nano? Or may be an Electric Nano.

Automatic Nano is not worth for that size and will rob FE. We can expect the electric, but there must be equal support from Government of India for providing charging stations in city centres or discounts for hybrids or some such stuff to promote it.

Nano Diesel need not be dead... OD is claiming that the Nano Twist Active (one with open-able hatch) has same exterior appearance as Nano Diesel. Here is the report:

http://overdrive.in/news/auto-expo-2...ctive-concept/

Excerpts-
Quote:
Tata Motors after launching the Nano Twist just a few weeks back has gone ahead and unveiled a concept, which is an indicator of the design theme for future generations of the small car, and what in all likelihood is the design of the future Nano diesel.

Nano diesel engine is ready. This is what TM's Autoexpo Press Kit says:

Quote:
Tata 0.8 L CRAIL TDI Engine
The Tata 0.8 L CRAIL TDI Engine (Common Rail Turbo Diesel) is an all-aluminum, compact 2-cylinder Turbo-charged Intercooled Common Rail Diesel Engine, built to deliver best-in-class performance and drive experience. This engine is fitted with a unique balancer shaft system which serves three functions namely, balancing of rotary forces, driving oil pump and driving high pressure pump. The turbocharger fitted on this engine is small and developed specifically for this engine.

Seems like they are displaying the engine given that it forms part of Press Kit. Has anyone seen it?

re: Nano Diesel with CRDI technology coming? EDIT: Plans scrapped for now

Tucked away along the sidewalls of the Tata hall at Auto Expo 2014, behind a Prima Truck was a partially cut section Nano Diesel Engine. Guess this missed the attention of most. Note the barely visible gear on the lower right side. Looks like a balancer shaft geared with the crankshaft to smoothen vibrations.

re: Nano Diesel with CRDI technology coming? EDIT: Plans scrapped for now

Good to know diesel version is being tested. I just hope this comes with an auto box.
The current Twist is around 2.8 lacs on road in pune. With discounts thrown in, the price is around 2.65 lac (approximate).

With diesel engine, the price will go up by 60K or so, and with automatic transmission, another 30K. So, the new price will be around 2.8 + 1 lac =~ 3.75 lac.

I know this will be fuel efficient, but for someone with city use, the additional cost could be a psychological barrier to cross.

re: Nano Diesel with CRDI technology coming? EDIT: Plans scrapped for now

Tata Nano Diesel put on hold again, while AMT variant greenlighted.
Quote:
The 5 speed AMT equipped Nano is likely to retain the 623 cc-twin cylinder petrol engine (37 Bhp-51 Nm) that it currently comes with. The AMT variant of the Nano is likely to feature power steering as standard. A price tag that’s about 30,000 rupees higher than the Nano Twist is likely for the AMT version.
