VW should have observed the Logan bombing big time. Either they make that dirt cheap or bringing the latest. If the former, they need to sell volumes and they need more dealers to do that.

It definitely doesn't look as outdated as the Logan, but it seems like a generation-old design by VW standards. I hope VW can bring something which looks at least as fresh as the Polo

From the report , there seems to be 2 cars from VW almost exactly matched in size and price that are expected to be launched at the exact same time (end of 2010).
Only one thing is bound to happen. VW will launch a sedan by the end of 2010 in the price range of 7-10 L but only 1 car is bound to come to India.

VW doesnt have the dealer network , nor the market in India for 2 sedans.

By subcompact if they have plans of bringing in something smaller than the POLO , i would request VW to plz leave the sides and the top open and also extend the back seat into the boot so that one can sit comfortably in the car.!

If VW is serious about India they will improve on their POLO hatchback and give us a better and more powerful POLO sedan (A good diesel would be much appreciated) or else VW be damned if they plan to bring in a dated car and hope to make money off it.

The polo sedan to be launched in India (globally to be know an Volkswagen Polo sedan 2010) will be based on the recently launched polo hatch, which has been reported several times in the media, quoting the high ranking Volkswagen officials.

Following is an artist's impression on how it may look like:

VW knows what's Ford's pricing game is, and again, it will launch a superior product against its competitors. Be it Renault, Ford, Tata/Fiat Combine , (dont consider Maruti as a competition)

But they know their turf well, unlike a group co. and more so even better than a group co (another one here)

VW should be bringing in the Polo sedan. The specs & looks are much better compared to the 'Gol'! VW will have to play their cards just right due to the utter lack of dealers compared to established players, the lack of a consistent brand image in spite of their aggressive TOI ads, & the offerings like the Phaeton and Passat which imply they really want to be associated with quality, not just large volumes (but volumes are what's needed to keep their bank rolling).
They're about to enter a very dirty & competitive segment with the Polo & we'll know 6 months down the line whether they'll be able to handle the compact sedan market too.

VW, if you're listening, bring in newer models, newer engines, better FE & way more tech!

Looks really bad. They should add a touch uniqueness to their upcoming cheaper cars. It doesn't even look like a VW should.

VW's product strategy for India is different from China, Brazil and South Africa. These places demand low priced but large & sturdy and cars that need not be very fuel efficient. Using old platforms with refresh makes sense there.

For India, they will use a sedan version of the 2009 launch Polo hatchback.

You're right. I was told months before at a survey comducted by VW(India) that the small sedan will be based on the current Polo hatch. No doubts about it.

Indians seem to be having a secret corner for bootylicious models. Cars designed as hatches are being burdened with extra fitting at the rear. Dzire, City ... now VW's so called 'sedan'.

The GOl strategy is flawed.

A bland car does not sell in India, especially in the sub Rs 10 lac level. We Indians want some masala (read chrome, snazzy styling, fuel efficiency but not necessarily outright performance) in our cars. Bland styling might sell in more expensive price levels, as potential buyers at say the Rs 15 or 20 lac+ price point, have different drivers for buying a particular car.

We hardly have buyers who would prefer a Bristol ( a handmade British car of the 60s, known for its bland styling) due to the fact that it is low profile.

The Polo derived sedan is a far far better option : newer styling and technology.

I doubt VW will commit harakiri by looking back to the Gol, rather than look forward to the Polo, the Polo sedan and the Up to drive volumes in an emerging market ( for them) such as India.

Regards

Well to me the car looks fairly spartan..!! It`s way too bland. It seems VW are trying to replicate the Honda strategy and price their products at a premium in the name of German technology. Dont think it`ll work.

VW Sedan - But Nothing to do with Polo?

Guys,

Just came across this press release

Volkswagen to launch new sedan by year-end

A board member from VW says that the planned sedan will have no relation with the Polo at all. Also, the model is 'All new, made in India' and should hit the market by the year end.

Interestingly, VW says that there is a vast market gap in the 7-10 lakh sedan catergory, which they aim to fill with this new product. Obviously they are refering to the slot between the Maruti Dzire and the Honda City.

Interesting development i think. Any thoughts / Comments? Would you know what platform this car could be based on? I hope its not the previous generation polo or fabia sedan.

This is strange, the sedan based on the Polo has already been caught testing in spy pics. And if VW really wants to keep the costs low,why would they go to the extent of developing and all new platform?
