I have been trying to use the data available in the "Buyer Guide" of automobile magazines on various small cars to arrive at some sort of qualitative ranking. This study will compare cars based on measurables like -

1) Outright Performance (0 - 100 kmph)
2) Driveability or In-Gear acceleration (30 - 80 kmph in 3rd Gear, 40 - 100 kmph in 4th Gear)
3) Mileage and cost per Km.
4) Initial Purchase price and depreciation (cost of ownership)
5) Safety features like airbags & ABS
6) Interior space, bootspace and legroom
7) Features that make our life easy - like climate control, electric mirrors etc.

This compilation does not cover subjective aspects like -

- Ride & handling
- Design/Looks
- After sales service
- Maintenance costs

This compilation of data also exludes cars with automatic transmission, LPG/CNG kits and also oddballs like Premier Rio/San Storm. I've excluded Reva for obvious reasons. Also, with the arrival of BSIV norms, some of the models mentioned in this list will go off the shelf.

I have NOT separated petrol and diesel cars in this "study" - it is quite interesting to compare their engine performances.

Part I - OUTRIGHT PERFORMANCE

This is the most used and abused statistic that everybody uses to measure a car's performance. Although, one wonders if it is really that important. I don't exactly recall getting to 100 kmph from zero in 11 seconds in my car (Optra's supposed 0-100 timing) too many times. But anyway, here are the rankings -

Inferences:

- As expected, petrol cars rule the top 10 scene.
- Good old Palio 1.6 is on top - but is it still on sale?
- The second quickest small car is a diesel!
- Nobody has ever talked about i10 as a performance car, but it is quicker than the Swift!
- While the Marutis are mostly on the top, the bottom end of the table has been taken over by the Tatas and the Fiats.

Not to worry though - the Tatas and the Fiats come back into the game in the next section - DRIVEABILITY.

The numbers are taken from Autocar India. There are a couple of reasons why I'm not including 0 -60 here -

1) Almost all small cars reach 60 kmph from zero in around 6 to 7 seconds.

2) There is almost no difference in ranking of the 0 - 60 cars from 0 - 100 cars. That is, a car that does a quick 0 - 100 does a quick 0 - 60 too.

I think Fiat got rid of the old 1.2 Palio and replaced it with an anaemic 1.1 litre engine. From what I know, the new 1.2 FIRE engine powering Vista and Punto has not been placed in the Palio.

Part II - DRIVEABILITY (IN-GEAR ACCELERATION)

I have been watching other people drive sitting in the passenger seat - and according to me, atleast 90% of the users are "lazy gear changers". That is, on a dual carriageway, 2nd gear is rarely ventured into. Even in a single lane state highway, the car stays in the 2nd gear for a very short time (because of the engine noise) - people tend to upshift pretty soon.

That's why, to most users, driveability of a car is more important (and useful) than outright 0 - 100 kmph performance.

Analysis:

- As mentioned before, Tatas & Fiats come back into the game. It's quite obvious that the engine and transmission of Tatas & Fiats have been tuned for driveability rather than outright performance.

- The Swift & Ritz diesel do quite well for itself on the driveability front too. They have the best of both worlds.

- Petrols are nowhere to be seen (except for Palio 1.6).

- Swift Diesel's 40 - 100 kmph time of 14 secs is beaten only by Skoda Laura 1.8 litre petrol engine. No other saloon petrol car gets close to Swift Diesel's 4th gear accelation. No wonder Swift diesel owners are so smug about their cars!

- Hyundai i20 1.4 diesel and Hyundai i10 1.2 Petrol rankings, which did so well in outright performance category, simply fall of the cliff when it comes to driveability.

Thanks Sunil. Now I'm making a ranking of cars that perform well both on outright acceleration and driveability - to do this, I will be using a simple "point based system".

Since there are 36 cars in the list, the car with the quickest outright acceleration gets 36 pts, the next one gets 35 pts (and so on) while the last one gets 1 pt. Ditto with driveability. Adding the two, the car with the highest points has the best combination of both outright performance and driveability.

The methodology might be too simplistic and perhaps a bit flawed too, but it does give some idea about how the engines perform.

- If you look at the top 10 cars now, 5 are powered by petrol and 5 are powered by diesel.

- Suprise entry by Hyundai Santro 1.1 petrol. Not exactly a scorcher in 0 - 100 kmph or in-gear acceleration, but performs decently well in both categories.


Coming up next - the running costs. Tata Nano should redeem itself in this section. It would be interesting to see which cars offer the best balance between quick acceleration, driveability and low running costs.

Assuming a 70% city and 30% highway run for each car, and a petrol price of Rs. 52 per litre and diesel price of Rs. 39 per litre, the ranking of running costs for each car would be something like this -

>> The withdrawn 1.6 GTX is still into comparison, however, Swift with 1.3 G13B block is not here. I am saying this because, manufacturer listed timings for a 0-100 km sprint is 12.9 secs. This can become the second best had you included in your analysis.

Different people get different mileage from the same car (mostly because of driving conditions, driving style, whether AC was ON or not etc). Now the car magazine would have tested all the same under the same conditions (hopefully). So taking the car mileage printed in the magazine should be fine.

So basically, if you had owned a Honda Jazz (for eg), your city mileage would have been more than 12.3 km/l - and hence the ranking of the cars wouldn't have changed .

Along with Palio 1.6, lots of cars listed in this test will not be on sale anymore, because of BS IV norms. But since we already have the data, I'm using it.

True, but numbers cannot measure ride & handling - that's why one needs to apply these subjective aspects too, before buying a car. This data will definitely help if you are comparing two tall boys for example.

Yes... I am also getting 12-13 KMPL in city with 80% Ac in city.
And 14+ with 90 % AC on in highway. (Just checked in Expressway(Pune-Mumbai))
