Traffic cops misbehave with NRI, inquiry on

Overzealous Chandigarh Traffic Police personnel went overboard allegedly in a drunken state late last night and misbehaved with a Non-Resident Indian (NRI) and his family near the Sector 40 and 41 intersection. After trying to find a fault on various counts, a constable and his superior, an ASI, finally issued a challan for apparently no fault. On the basis of a complaint at the police headquarters an enquiry has been initiated into the affair.

The NRI was stopped and reprimanded for having alloy wheels in his car. After the NRI refused to accept that there was anything wrong with having alloy wheels, the traffic policemen started questioning him about the antecedents of other occupants of the car. When they were told that the woman in the car was the NRI’s wife, the traffic policemen issued a challan for not wearing seat belt.
Today, Mr Yadwinder Singh, who lives in the USA and is currently on a visit to Chandigarh, lodged a formal complaint against Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Tilak Raj at the police headquarters in Sector 9 here. Mr Dinesh Bhatt, Superintendent of Police (SP) (Operations) after going through the complaint initiated an inquiry into the incident.
Mr Yadwinder Singh alleged in his complaint that he was coming from Sector 9 along with his wife and two female family friends. The policemen stopped their car and the constable on duty asked his wife, who was driving the car, to show her driving licence. When asked the reason, the constable told them to see his senior officer. Mr Yadwinder Singh went to the ASI along with his wife, but the officer talked to them in an abusive manner.
Mr Yadwinder Singh further alleged that the ASI told them that they had alloy wheels in their car, which was a violation. On which they told him that they were not aware about the violation and would change the wheels if they had been warned earlier about it. To which the ASI used abusive language and said it was not Canada or the USA where people were first warned and would teach them a lesson by sending them to jail and impound their car if they argue with him. The policemen went to the extent of humiliating him by asking him to stand properly.

“Following this some people gathered at the spot. They finally issued a challan for not for wearing a seat belt instead of the alloy wheels for which we were stopped initially”, said Mr Yadwinder.

The in-charge of the internal vigilance cell of the UT Traffic Police, Sub-Inspector Jaswinder Kaur, said the inquiry had been marked to her.

Sad thing is because the guy is an NRI he has been able to use this to get the story into the media. I dread to think how many local people this pathetic copper must have harrassed.

A major revamp of all our Government organisations is required. Our Government run organisations are still living in 1947.
Come on man, our damned policemen don't even know what airbags are. Honeslty!
Add to that, bureaucracy... killer combo, isnt it?

Yeah the alloys thing was stupid on the traffic cop's part but then the NRI shouldnt complain much abt the challan should he ? She wasnt wearing the seat belt....do they do the same in the US? I think not ;-)

I think sacking will be too harsh. Cops should apologies to couple and refund their fined money in front of media. Remember, our cops should not be discouraged so much like some members have said,. Moral learned. End of story !

It is not that I am supporting cops, but alloy Wheels are supposed to be illegal if it has not come on as a standard fitment and has an entry in the RC book.
Also, if you do fit Alloys or change the color or any other mods ideally you need to get it entered in your RC book at your local RTO.
For that matter, stereos, dark sun films are also illegal.
But then the Alloy wheel illegal funda, only if questioned by an RTO officer is legal and not by the traffic police.
And not wearing a seat belt is a mistake, that too an NRI..
You think he would have done it in the US??
All in all, cops in India are rude, incompetent and boors.
There are lot of factors like their salaries which are peanuts..
Most of the cops join the force by paying bribes, which they need to recover after they join the force. Many of these are not well educated..
And also Indian Public mentality, you think if a cop speaks softly most of the public would respond in the same way???
If it is a honest cop, the public threatens him of having political power..

So blaming only the cops is very easy, but the whole system has to be blamed starting from polliticians who are out to make personal profit and not to upheave the current day to day to miseries. We are also to be blamed as we vote for the same politicians inspite of knowing what they are do nothing about it and all we do is BLAME.....

Hey,

Alloy wheels are not illegal from any angle and any circumstances and nor are stereos or sun films. Dark films are banned from the security angle in view of terrorist threats.

Also an RTO officer and traffic police fall under the same department.

well adit1329, cops should speak politely after judging the person. If person is well educated and mannered, cops should behave in manners with that particular civilian. I have also dealt with some cops in my life and most of them was polite after they judged my position and found that I am software engineer and educated person.

Well, if cop paid bribe to get his job, its not civilians fault and they make enough money from people who really break traffic rules. Taking bribe from innocent driver by threatening is not good at all. Most cops have this sense but some are brutal and senseless.

Nope. RTO and Traffic Police are two separate entities. Anything that changed from standard fitment has to be approved by RTO.
