Re: Spied: Volkswagen Up! test mule

UP production version unveiled.

The production version of the Volkswagen Up! has been unveiled. The Up! will be the cheapest car in the Volkswagen line up in India as well as other important global markets and will debut early next year. It will first be launched in Europe in December, 2011 and will be available in 3 versions – take up!, move up! and high up! There will be two models based on the high up!, the up! white and the up! black. The Volkswagen Up! is powered by a new generation of 1-liter, 3-cylinder petrol engines producing 60 PS 75 PS of power respectively. A BlueMotion Technology version will be made available as well with a Stop/Start system.

The Volkswagen Up! can be had with new safety technology system known as the City Emergency Braking. It is automatically active at speeds under 30 kmph, and it uses a laser sensor to detect the risk of an imminent collision. The Up! measure 3.54 meter in length, 1.64 meter in width and 1.48 metres in height. The wheelbase at 2.42 meters is one of the longest in the segment. The boot space is bigger then even the Swift at 251 liters and 951 liters with the rear seats folded down. This 4-seater is based on the MQB platform and uses a front-wheel drive with front engine layout. T[u]he Volkswagen Up! is expected to be priced between Rs. 3-5 lakhs and will compete with the Maruti Alto and Hyundai H800."

Re: Spied: Volkswagen Up! test mule

Quite a nice looking car, but space inside seems to be very less, specially at the back. Compared to the tall boys!

I believe this will go against A-star/ i10/ Figo, and not Alto whenever it comes to India.

Re: Spied: Volkswagen Up! test mule

From about UP.

"The car that seen is has a wheelbase of 2.42 meters and a total length of 3.54 meters. Expect the five door version to be longer.

The Up! will also feature a Portable Infotainment gadget which will control many features of the car and can be carried along by you as you move out of it. Optional equipment for maximizing utility will include kits like the kid box, city box and travel box. The car will go on sale in Europe in December 2011 with three trim levels – Take Up!, Move Up! and High Up! with High Up! being the top of the line variant. The black and white cars you see in the pictures are two special variants – Up! Black and Up! White

Engines options would include two variants of VW new 1.0-liter petrol mills producing 59 and 74bhp. No details on the diesel options have been revealed, but for India, the 1.2 liter diesel engine powering the Polo and the Fabia makes logical sense. A CNG and EV variant of the car is also planned for the future.

The up! will first be launched in the European market. It all starts in December. There are three versions for different budgets and needs: take up! is the entry-level car, move up! the comfort oriented one and high up! the top version. Directly at the car’s market launch, there will also be two independent models based on the high up!: the up! black and the up! white. up! offers maximum space and superb functionality over 3,54 x 1,64 meters. up! debuts as first car in its class with City Emergency Braking.
The new up! – a small Volkswagen with great potential "

My guess is that VW will sell the Up! in a 5-door body-style, here in India.

A 3-door hatch will not go down too well with the car-buying audience in our country. So a 5-door Up! will have a considerably longer wheel-base, thus liberating more space for the 3rd and 4th passenger at the back.

My guess is that he Figo might fizzle out by 2013. The i10 would be VW's target too. The real threat to the Up! would be the latest from the Honda stable, the Brio.

Is VW coming out with a 3 lakh hatchback?

I saw in a regional website (thatstamil.com) that VW is coming out shortly with a 3 lakh Hatchback. What is the time frame in which this is planned? As i see it, for all manufacturers, the question is only "when" to enter this bracket not why.

Re: Is VW coming out with a 3 lakh hatchback?

Exactly. The VW Up! will be positioned under the Polo. VW says that it will still be high-quality even if priced under the Polo and IMHO, the interiors look simple, yet fabulous!

We can be overtly optimistic but the pricing looks unlikely given that its likely to be priced around 8K euros abroad

I think VW will price the Up! very, very well, here in India.

The reason why they've decided to introduce it here a year later is that they'd probably require more time to prepare the assembly of such a product. they don't want to hurry it up and get it wrong.

VW, being German, will never compromise on quality, fit and finish. Now that we know that, one must remember that VW had setup a huge facility in Pune, the Chakan plant.

The reason why they've done this is not to cater to the Polo/Vento demand. It's the Up! that will get the most priority. The VW plant in Pune has been designed to cater to the volumes that VW is hoping the Up! will generate.

To keep costs down, VW will be looking to localize as much as possible. So a price tag of 4-6 lakhs is very realistic. It will be a notch below the Polo, and will be up against the likes of the Honda Brio and the Hyundai i10, not to mention the Beat, and the other hatchbacks around.

Re: Spied: Volkswagen Up! test mule

Wow, those interiors look nice for a car that will reportedly go up against the i10, Brio et al. Shame it won't be launched anytime soon though. Finally, a Volkswagen launch that I'm really looking forward to!

Re: Spied: Volkswagen Up! test mule

Recently we brought you the latest details of the India bound Up from VW. VW did not wait till Frankfurt where this car was supposed to be first unveiled. Instead, they released all the information pertaining to Up in a massive global press release. Internationally, the VW Up replaces the aging Fox hatchback and in India the Up will be the cheapest offering from VW till date.Autoweek has some sypshots of the three door version caught testing in Wolfsburg. As of right now, the VW Up will be tested on the European roads because this car will make its debut in Europe first where it will compete against Toyota Aygo and Fiat Panda. The India debut, although confirmed, is not anytime soon.

In India, the VW Up will compete against established brands such as i10, A-Star and the likes.
It will be interesting to see Maruti Suzuki’s (the king pin of the Indian small car market) stance when VW launches the Up because it will compete against many Maruti Suzuki products. Considering VW owns 19.9% stake in Suzuki and their relationship has now gone a bit sour, the situation will be a spectacle to watch.
VW is expected to launch the Up in India in 2013 or 2014.
