The design elements used on the front bumper in the concept vehicle as well as the sketches gave some iota of character to the GLA. Now this production version just looks like a glorified A Class, failing to hide it's roots.

Plus one on that. If they'd maintained a more butch look, the GLA would have turned out much better, on the Audi Q3 lines rather than the Volvo V40 CC's.

Mercedes-Benz GLA SUV unveiled.


The new Mercedes GLA compact SUV is the fourth member of Mercedes’ new small compact family based on its front/all-wheel drive MFA platform, joining the A-class, B-class and CLA.

is 4417mm long, 1805mm wide and 1494mm high, which makes it slightly longer, narrower and lower than the concept version. It is also 125mm longer than the A-class on which it is based, the pair sharing the same 2699mm wheelbase.

Internationally, the GLA will be offered with a range of transverse four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines equipped with either front 
or four-wheel drive.

Mercedes starts producing GL-class SUV locally.

India is the first country to locally produce the GL-class after Merc’s plant in Tuscaloosa, USA; price now at Rs 72.58 lakh.

It comes with a 2987cc V6 diesel engine that puts out 258bhp at 3600rpm and 63.2kgm at 1600rpm, which is mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission. This translates to a 0-100kph time of 8.9 seconds.

The 2014 Mercedes Benz GLA crossover is due for an unveil at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, which is days away. The crossover, based on the Modular Front Architecture (MFA), will be the entry level SUV in the German luxury car maker's range. The first completely un-camouflaged image of the GLA's rear end has made its way onto the interweb.



The GLA crossover, which will share many parts including its engine line up with the MFA based cars such as the A-Class, B-Class and CLA models, is expected to be sold in the Indian market as well. Both petrol and diesel engines could be offered on the India-spec GLA, which will be launched here as early as 2014. A 7 speed dual clutch gearbox could be standard for the India-spec version of the GLA.

The crossover's top end variants will get an all wheel drive system while the base models will make do with the front wheel drive layout. Mercedes Benz has been doing good numbers this year, having moved into the second place in India, in terms of sales volumes. The arrival of the GLA is expected to give Mercedes Benz the much needed entry level crossover to take on the likes of the Audi Q3 and the BMW X1.

The GLA crossover is expected to be priced at a level that's comparable to the likes of the Q3 and the X1. So, expect a sub-30 lakh rupee price point for the Mercedes Benz crossover. According to a report on AutocarPro, Mercedes Benz India CEO, Mr Eberhard Kern, has hinted at the possibility of his firm launching the CLA sedan and GLA crossover in India, to meet the growing demand for affordably priced luxury cars.

With the Chakan assembly facility expanded to assembly 20,000 cars/year, Mercedes Benz is likely to assemble the MFA based luxury cars in India from 2014. Along with the A-Class and B-Class models, the CLA sedan and the GLA crossover could complete the list of MFA based cars to be assembled at Chakan. With the depreciating Indian rupee, it is imperative that luxury car makers adopt the CKD assembly route in order to maintain car prices at affordable levels.

The 2014 Mercedes Benz GLA crossover, the German luxury car maker's answer to the likes of the Audi Q3 and the BMW X1 has been unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany. Mercedes Benz India's managing director Mr Eberhard Kern has hinted that the GLA crossover could be launched in India next year, making this unveil all the more interesting from an Indian perspective.



From the released official imagery of the GLA, and also its dimensions, it is clear that the crossover is a butch and jacked up version of the A-Class hatchback. Like the A-Class hatchback, the GLA crossover is based on the MFA platform. The GLA crossover comes with dimensions (length x width x height: 4,414 mm x 1,804 mm x 1,494 mm) that are larger than the A-Class hatchback.



These larger dimensions and the 4MATIC four wheel drive system means that the crossover also gets a more powerful turbo petrol and turbo diesel engine line up. The 1.6 liter turbo petrol engine outputs 156 Bhp-250 Nm (GLA 200) while the 2 liter turbo petrol engine is good for 211 Bhp-350 Nm (GLA 250).

The 2.2 liter turbo diesel engine is available with 136 Bhp-300 Nm (GLA 200 CDI) and 170 Bhp-350 Nm (GLA 220 CDI) states of tune. A 6 speed manual gearbox is standard on the GLA 200 and the GLA 200 CDI variants while the GLA 250 and GLA 220 CDI variants come with the 7 speed dual clutch gearbox as standard.



The styling of the GLA crossover is inspired heavily by the A-Class hatchback and so are the interiors, which are shared with hatchback model, albeit with detailing changes. Such parts sharing is the cornerstone of the MFA platform, which forms the basis of entry-level affordable luxury cars from the car brand with the three pointed star.



Orders for the GLA crossover will be taken from November 2013 with deliveries to commence in early 2014. The crossover is expected to follow the CLA sedan into the Indian car market sometime late next year. CKD assembly at Mercedes Benz India's Chakan factory is likely for all MFA platform cars including the GLA and CLA models.

Going by the pictures above this car appears to look like a slightly larger Hatchback : S, memories of Ecosport. Also, I'm not a fan of the tail lights.
Looks awkward and cheap. Looking forward to offerings from BMW and Audi.

It is the normal GLA for sure.
No question of the GLA AMG at this stage.

The GLA is meant for the X1, Q3 segment. No way they will get in the GLA AMG at this stage.
