Mercedes-AMG One: new name for F1 hypercar confirmed

Mercedes has decided to give the Project One an official name, and it’s going to be called; the Mercedes-AMG One.

New ‘official spyshots’ released by Mercedes show the hybrid hypercar testing at what appears to be Millbrook, and as you’d expect, it’s covered in camo.

Alongside the new images, Mercedes have given us an update on how the hybrid hypercar is coming along, too. According to the release, Mercedes’ HPP team at Brixworth have already spent hours making the F1-derived powertrain ready for production, and the 1000+bhp unit has passed all its dyno tests.

he engine bit of the equation is a 1.6-litre single-turbo V6, closely related to that found in Lewis’s F1 car and engineered by Mercedes’ F1 powertrain plant in Brixworth. It revs to no less than 11,000rpm - lower than the F1 engine, due to lower-octane pump fuel, but still Pretty Good Going for a road car engine. It generates 603bhp (from a 1.6!).

Unlike an F1 car, the hypercar is all-wheel drive, with torque vectoring helping to translate all that power in a direction of the driver’s choosing.

In addition to the V6, there are four electric motors. Two drive the front wheels, then there’s a further 120kW one attached to the V6 engine’s crank, and an 80kW one is fitted within the turbocharger itself. This last one, designed to cheat turbo lag and called MGU-H (motor generator unit - heat) in F1 terminology, can rev as high as 100,000rpm.

It has still not made it into production even though Mercedes made the car around the engine (like Porsche did in the Carrera GT which also had an engine originally developed for a racing program). Following are a few reasons:

a) Engine start-up: Due to the complexity of F1 engines, they can't cold-start, while the actual engine start-up is through an external starter motor. For the AMG one, they would have had to increase tolerances big time.

b) Cooling system: F1 cars use two big radiators without cooling fans in order to dissipate the heat that the high-revving engine creates. And they have the space to place it in an inclined fashion in the side pods but road cars have to seat two and also be road worthy which means packaging issues! Ask Koenigsegg how difficult it is for them to supply the Agera RS to their customers in the middle east, only due to cooling issues.

c) Torque produced by F1 engine is quite low and ERS acts at the rear axle. I believe the road car will send power to the front wheels, just like the Porsche 919 Le Mans car.

d) Sound: people who have heard it on race tracks during testing say it sounds like a misfiring V6 or something. Not exactly expected from a 2M USD car. Especially when its rivals like the GMA T.50 sound so good.

The incredible delays they've faced on this project really makes you realise that you can no longer plonk an F1 engine in any old car. Especially one that was designed to idle at RPMs that would be in the red zone for normal road cars. Not to mention those engines were realistically designed to last 6 to 8 races at most. A whole engine rebuild that frequent isn't a great look for the owner. I wonder if the impetus for the project fell a bit after Dr Zetsche left

Talking to a friend who put down a deposit on a Project One, he indicated the whole thing has been a mess from the start. Getting the engine to work in a road car has been a huge undertaking and he's really not sure how real world usable it will be. A complete rebuild after 30k miles also doesnt thrill him. I think if Mercedes could quietly bury the whole project, they probably would.

Its a bit of an interesting situation with Hamilton and the AMG One. Hamilton has declared that he will only be driving electric cars on the street going forward yet at the same time, he will be getting one of the AMG One's. It will be interested to see if he actually is seen driving it or if it gets quietly sold off.
