The Mahindra Thar (for export only)

Note from Mod : The Thar's full test & review has been uploaded at this link. Thread closed. Please continue the discussion over on the review thread.

Hi jeepers,

Found an interesting on web about MM540 launch in europe. This is called mahindra Thar. Looks meaty with 235 A/T tyres and 2000 cc peugeot CRDI engine. Yeah u read i right...CRDI !!! The following are the specifications-

1997 cc turbo diesel CRDI
90 BHP
20.5 Kgm torque
power steering
NGCS chassis & suspension
5 speed gearbox
4wd
Priced at about 15900 euros (Not that expensive considering CRDI engine)

Wish this is launched here....with 100 bhp scorpio Euro III non CRDI engine available abroad to keep the cost low. Will be great off road and on road too!!

This sounds very interesting. This used to be a very decent off roader here when in production..

I also noticed on the Mahindra South Africa they offer a turbo charged version of the 2498 cc XD3 engine which makes 74 Kw @ 3800 RPM and 235 Nm @ 1800 RPM torque. I would love to source that engine and throw it in my MM540 but given the chasis dynamics of the MM540, I will probably spend a lot of time on my side ;-)

Market in India?

This price as stated is 9.3 lakh. It will have no market in India at that price. If they bring it down to 6 lakh I will be most interested indeed. The power steering (switchbacks) and disc brakes (it's a long way down) are nice to have up here in the BIG HILLS.

You can put a turbo charger on the 2.5 L engine from the Armada/bolaro, available in India, the block is design to handle turbo charging...it was mentioned during the launh of the engine by Mahindra.

Looks good. Is it just the picture,or does the rear segment look way too small in comparison with the front end?

I don't think so. I checked with the dealer here and now all Bolero's come with the DI engine. According to the Mahindra website, only the 4x4 version of the Bolero comes with the XD3 engine but is not the Non Turbo version. The torque numbers are much lower. The dealer claims that the XD3 engine in India is not BSIII compliant so they are not taking orders for the 4x4 Bolero. If you need 4x4 only the DI Invader is available.

Aah, finally they built a successor to the Classic. Why use a Peugeot engine when they have their own??

Hey, u know what, XD 3p turbo charged engine is a big failure for Mahindra in Africa. Intitially the Bolero pick ups were offered with this engine and had to face lot of problems. Now they have withdrawn this engine. So, when company cant do it, u dont try doing it as it would put hole in your pocket. Now mahindra uses scorpio NEF engines 2.6 turbo non crdi on pickups. This engine is derated and pumps up to about 100 bhp. This chain drive engine is a work horse and has proven itself in scorpio. This engine would be suiable for THAR if launched in india with tremendous torque. The launch price desired should be about 6 lakhs max.
Mahindra Bring it ON!!!

what is the current MM540 like? the MM540 our family owned in 1996 rusted like mad. have they fixed that problem?

and getting the current MM540 to look like the Thar should be easy. all it needs is better tyres and some cosmetic changes.

the standard MM540 engine is more than enough for offroading. it loses out on the highway, but you could fix that by changing the final gear ratio right? is'nt that easier than an engine and a transmission swap?
just asking, cos I have plans

What an awesome looking Jeep! Its a pity that Mahindra doesn't offer a simple macho off-roader with a powerful diesel to the Indian enthusiast. Especially when they have so many engines that could serve the purpose. Mahindra are pretty adept at mixing & matching engines across the range, and I really don't see a reason for this gap in their product portfolio.
