ID:795 posted by agspins is probably a Willys CJ-3B complete with 4wd live front axle and some cosmetic disfigurement -- those ugly fender skirts and horizontal slatted V grille.

Then again it has some features of the ancient white USPS postal right-hand-drive two-wheel-drive Jeeps of the USA. I believe they were Jeep DJ-3 Dispatchers.

Willys Jeeps were made all over the world, by companies like Hotchkiss in France, EBRO in Spain, Mahindra & Mahindra in India, Keohwa in Korea and Mitsubishi in Japan.

This is one of these global cousins. It has the common Willys 4.5J, 4½-inch wide, 16-inch diameter wheels, so familiar in India.

What is interesting is that the assembler/modifier has maintained the 4wd running gear.

Well Well ID:795 is a Shibal commonly referred as Shibal Taxi.In 1955, three brothers founded Gukje Motor Company, with the ambitious goal of producing South Korea's first automobile. They took the chassis of used American military Jeeps, built imitation American engines of their own, refurbished American 3-speed transmissions,hand-built the bodies, and came up with this: the Shibal ("Beginning").Ugly, heavy and expensive, initial sales were slow, but when President Syngman Rhee rewarded Gukje Motor with an industrial award, sales took off. Nearly all Shibals were used as taxicabs due to their durability, and even to this day most people refer to Shibals as "Shibal Taxi".

Thanks for unearthing this 4x4 curiosity and also the information agspins. The pic you posted viz.

is a Gukje Shibal "prototype", so doesn't quite fit this thread. Never mind.

Here is some more info.

It was exhibited at the 10th Anniversary of Liberation Expo in Aug 1955, with some pride as the first Korean-assembled vehicle.

Choi Mu-Seong and his brothers established Gukje (or Kukje? Motors
Ga and Ka are identical in Korean like Tamil?) -- a cottage industry to put together the “Shibal”.

They patched together a body on a 1953 US Army (Korean War) Willys CJ-3B chassis. The prototype used the good ol' Willys Hurricane F4-134 engine, a refurbished Warner T90 3-speed transmission and Spicer-18 transfer case, so familiar to us on old Mahindras in India.

Like BMW in Munich, and Skoda, Aurangabad, one can read the name from the sky.

It supposedly took 4 months to hammer together a Shibal taxi, by hand !! There was no production line.

Not much different from our illegal Jugaads(जुगाड), Marutaas(मरुता) and Chakdos(चकडो) or, for that matter, the body-tinkering done by DC with insourced bits and pieces.

It is somewhat different from this underpowered Shibal taxi which used a locally made 1323 cc knockoff of the old F-head Hurricane engine and 15-inch dia. 5.5-inch wide wheels from the Willys CJ-5, rather than the 16-inch dia. 4.5-inch wide wheels from the Willys CJ-3B.

ID:797 (ID:308 posted by V-16) is a 1952 Datsun DC-3 Sport roadster.

It had an 860cc 20 bhp 4cyl. Datsun D10 engine and could top out at 84 km/h. Had a 3 speed crash box (non-synchromesh) and leaf springs all round.

These mechanicals were shared with the Datsun 5147 pickup.

The Datsun DC-3 Sports was designed and manufactured by Yuichi Ohta, son of the promoter of the Ohta car and truck co. The roadster was in production from 1952-58.

Sir, i think it perfectly suites this thread as the shibal was not just an prototype, agreed it was hand built ( jugaad types) without proper assembly lines.The production started in 1955, was on till 1964.the total no of Shibals produced were around 3000.Though mainly they were used in taxis, If we say mainly used in taxi that means the production has to be in a few thousands.

Let me clarify.

One the one hand, I agree, the later Shibals were hand-assembled en masse albeit without a production line.

So it would have been fine, had you had posted the light green one below, which were used as taxis and elite personal transport.

On the other hand, my point is,
that your original black and white image (for the Guess the Car) is not the production Shibal.

It is the single one-off prototype which is prominently Willys CJ-3B, or its military avatar, the Willys M606, complete with 16-inch rims.
