Formula 1 | 2021 Belgian Grand Prix | Spa-Francorchamps | 27-29 August 2021

Formula One returns after the summer break after what seems like an eternity to me. The Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps is one of the most iconic race tracks on the Formula 1 calendar.

Based in the small municipality of Stavelot, this track has hosted almost every Belgian Grand Prix since 1983, missing only 1984, 2003 and 2006.

Throughout its history Spa has undergone several design changes, but by far the most notable was in 1979 when it was cut from an 8.76-mile circuit to its current length of 4.32 miles. In the process, this track went from using public roads to becoming a permanent racing facility with 20 corners.

Spa is seen as one of the ultimate tests of a driver. In particular, the Eau Rouge and Raidillon corner combination are some of the most spectacular sights in Formula 1, especially when the cars are launched through there at full throttle.

And as if the circuit itself wasn't difficult enough, Spa has a habit of producing very unpredictable weather. Sometimes it can be raining at one part of the circuit, but dry and sunny at another part.

Spa's current contract to host the Belgian Grand Prix runs until the end of 2021.

Re: Formula 1 | 2021 Belgian Grand Prix | Spa-Francorchamps | 27-29 August 2021

The Belgian Grand Prix is one of the most exciting races of the year in my opinion. Here's why:
1. It is definitely one of the suitable tracks for the likes of Mercedes, with Lewis Hamilton winning the race four times in the past.
2. Awesome Overtaking opportunities throughout the circuit. (Who remembers Pierre Gasly's mind boggling overtake at Eau Rouge last year?)
3. It is widely regarded as the best race track in the world.

Also, with the Max-Lewis rivalry closer than ever, there is nothing that will keep us F1 fans from watching the race this weekend!

That onboard from Alonso was enough for me to be convinced..

They are professionals.
Even if we drive/ride the same vehicles as they do, on a track, they will always have the edge.

I tried to lookout for the braking points in that lap multiple times, in slow mo too, to no avail. Either I am lousy or they are too good..

How impressive is Russell in the wet, in a dog of a car no less.

We could be in for another generation of British podium anthems. Current gen's best still going strong, and the Brits have Russell and Norris lined up to take the mantle when the opportunity arises (and hopefully competitve cars).

Edit: How slow is race control? Both Vettel and Norris said on their out laps it's too wet to run Q3, session allowed to run and Norris has binned it at Raidillon, a corner that's already had one bad crash in the W Series earlier.

Russell nearly pulled off pole in a Williams, on equal footing with the frontrunners, not a fluke. Wow!

What a lap by Russell to take the second position in the qualifying.
Brilliant lap in the difficult conditions.

Though Max takes the pole, the lap by Russell in Williams is top notch lap by a driver who will be potential world champion.

Verstappen pull off a great lap to seal pole but the qualifier of the day was Russell. Just Mega!

Seb's Aston arriving to check on Lando seconds after he had that big shunt at eau rouge was such a great moment.

George putting in a mega lap to outqualify Hamilton's mercedes and to claim that p2 is indeed the highlight of the day. Today's performance should definitely play a huge role in taking a decision regarding that second seat at mercedes for 2022.

Shame about Lando.. he was looking front row today.

Mega lap by George! Lewis already seems depressed!

Hope we get a wet race tom.

Guys, George Russell out qualified Lewis Hamilton on Valteri Bottas’s birthday

What did we just witness? A legend in the making? Russell out qualified Hamilton Vettel Alonso Perez and everyone else just based on MERIT in a freaking Williams. This is history. I’m beyond ecstatic. He deserves that Mercedes seat. Great drive by every driver in today’s harsh conditions. It’s always the unexpected result that makes me jump in the air for joy. 2021 season keeps getting better

Cheers!

This season just keeps giving more twists!
Feel sorry for Norris, could have been a very interesting front row had he not spun.
Superb lap by Russel and Max for the front row. Cannot wait for tomorrow's race.

Props to Vettel, true gentleman and some proper sportsmanship from him today.

Re: Formula 1 | 2021 Belgian Grand Prix | Spa-Francorchamps | 27-29 August 2021

The season of dreams, guys! How insane was that quali? Russell 2nd in what probably is the 9th fastest car on the grid? That's some real skill there.

Max as usual was a god in the wet. Lando had such poor luck. I'm honestly still shocked at the incompetence of the FIA. How does anyone decide to let cars go out under such heavy rain? Especially at a circuit like SPA? Seb was right in saying what he did and his care for other drivers makes me love him more and more at this point.

Fun Fact: Bottas was beaten on his birthday by two Williams (if we include the grid penalty).

What a time to be watching F1!

Re: Formula 1 | 2021 Belgian Grand Prix | Spa-Francorchamps | 27-29 August 2021

Simply amazing!! Russell has almost guaranteed his race seat with Mercedes for next year. He is leaving Wolff absolutely no reason to not take him and enough justifications to not continue with Bottas.

It’s sad for Bottas though, after driving a Mercedes it’s a real step down if he has to drive a Williams next year. At least he will continue to be in F1.

Was really hoping for a mistake from Verstappen so Russell could create history by taking Pole today. Anyways, it’s only a matter of when it happens, not if.

It’s really going to be a cracker of a race tomorrow. Expect Russell to not bother Hamilton too much with an eye on next years seat

Cheers

Re: Formula 1 | 2021 Belgian Grand Prix | Spa-Francorchamps | 27-29 August 2021

Belgium is indeed one of the best tracks and has seen one of the best rivalries like Häkkinen vs Schumacher, the rain today only made it more interesting.

Awesome drive by Russel getting in the front row, is it Russel or has Williams improved nicely this season?

Vettel and Norris were right calling to stop the qualifying when the track got considerably wet at the start of Q3. Seb was the first person to check on Norris after he crashed, classic Seb.

Awesome drive by Russel. That too in a Williams!
Lando Noriss crash was very scary. Am glad he is unhurt.
If the weather continues to crash the party, we can expect an exciting race.

Here are the qualifying highlights for all those who missed it.
