Word of advise to everybody:
  • If you have still not upgraded to PM 2.5 filter, do it now
  • Change filter every 12-18 months depending upon your usage and pollution in your region

Re: My first car: 2020 Maruti Suzuki XL6 Alpha MT Review

Hi Sashi,
Need your inputs as I am looking to change from stock ecopias of my 2021 Ertiga as they've done nearly 40k. Have always felt they have poor wet grip right from the start and its only getting worse. Look forward to get this exercise done before next monsoon.

I checked with my Nexa service manager who said it might be better to change the whole underpinning setup including steering rack etc, if I intend to go to 16 inch alloys. Is this what you did too? The cost works out to about 1L INR. If I retain the stock alloys, whether 195/65 R15 give cornering and stability issues? I already feel the suspension is a tad bouncy.
I asked the vendor if he could give a trial with some old 195/65s but he doesn't have them in stock as its relatively low in volume. How would you compare 185/65 R15 Conti UC6/Michelin versus 195/65 R15 Earth 1? Whether using slightly stiffer tyres for 195 would give better stability without losing so much out on comfort?
Another important question, would the acceleration drop significantly?
Would much appreciate your opinions.

I so wanted to get a PM 2.5 HVAC filter for my Marazzo. But Mahindra does not sell one. I sometime wonder if a xl6 filter will fit in a Marazzo.

I've been using Continental UC6s on my XL6 and they perform very well in wet conditions with minimal road noise, of course you can explore with tyre other brands who offer similar/almost similar performance.

Replacing steering rack??? Unless there's something wrong with your steering system in your car, that seems like an unnecessary replacement, plus the part itself is not cheap. Also, what do you mean by underpinning setup? The suspension components?

It shouldn't hamper stability and cornering, the larger sidewall and width will actually improve ride quality. If you plan to go with 16 inchers then you could see the ride quality degrade.

I'm assuming you're talking about the stiffness of the compound. This really depends on the type of roads you drive on, softer compounds are better for good roads, harder compounds usually better for rougher roads. Wider tyres will definitely improve stability. Comfort is really dependent on factors like road noise and ride harshness, you should see better comfort on soft compounds, however, they are more susceptible to damage when compared to hard compound tyres.

If you go with larger tyres, the rotational mass will increase. In theory, the acceleration should drop, but in reality, it's marginal and really not that noticeable.

14. Fog light changed to Valeo+Philips combo

Hi Shashi,
I searched for the valeo+philips you gave last time but couldn't find in this thread. The link in Boodmo which I had saved is throwing an error. Maybe they have removed the item.

Please share recommendation and links for the fog light housing and the bulb to go with it.

I came across a Philips LED with likeness of Halogen temperature. Will this be useful for the fog lamp? What would be the pin type (H1/H4?) to match the existing fog lamp connector?

I am also looking for the DRL which comes in the shape of inverted tick mark. Amazon ones do not have good ratings. Any other suggestions for this please?

Hello Shashi!

Is there any place from where I can find the dimensions of these filters? Tried looking up on Boodmo as well as Maruti. Could not find for Baleno and Ignis. For Ciaz it says L - 215mm, W - 190mm, H - 30mm. I'm not even sure if these ones are right.

It would really be helpful for other owners if dimensions were available. Could be used across vehicles.

Thank you for the reply! The dealer suggested changing the whole suspension setup including steering rack if I wished to go with 195/60 R16 of the new XL6. But given the expenditure involved and the hassle of resale of multiple spares, I think I would restrict myself to 195/65 R15. Also I recently noticed that Maruti is actually listing 195/65 R15 Turanzas for swift/ertiga on their genuine accessories website!

Engine oil switch query

Hello everyone. Have this query
During the last annual service I switched the engine oil in my XL6 from the default semi synthetic to 5w40 grade fully synthetic.

Did it at the Maruti service center itself, I assume they use Castrol.

After this though the engine became slightly smoother, there was a drop in fuel efficiency by 2 KMPL.

Now its time for my next service, am wondering if I should move back to Semi-Synthetic or continue with Fully-Synthetic.

I mentioned this to the service engineer, he said could be because the spark plugs and air filter needs to be changed. Once this is changed you should get back the original milage.

Any suggestions / inputs would be much appreciated

Thanks
Fillmore

This looks like another case of service centre up-selling wrong grade engine oil. Refer the post below.

Coming to the question at hand, while changing engine oil type and grade, it is recommended to use a flush to remove the old oil before pouring the new one. Also thicker oil will provide better protection but at the cost of performance and efficiency.

Re: My first car: 2020 Maruti Suzuki XL6 Alpha MT Review

Did anyone complete 1L Kms on the odo with their XL6 till date? Asking because I have a relative, who uploaded a status in WhatsApp stating that his XL6 AT has completed 90k Kms in 2 years of ownership (bought in Feb 23) and he does highway runs quite often and claims his XL6 as "Gareebon ka Innova" or "Sasti Wali Innova". And, he also claims that he gets an FE of around 22-25 Kmpl with cruise set at 80-85 Kmph.

He did a pilgrimage trip from Hyderabad to TN, KL last year with his parents and a trip to Mumbai and Chennai with his wife and kids recently. He is a doctor by profession and also an avid traveller.

In the first year of ownership, he did 50k Kms on the odo while we did the same feat with our Innova Hycross Hybrid in 17 months of ownership (presently at 58k Kms on the odo) and his XL6 is being donned in Nexa blue colour.

My maternal grandparents, who own 2021-end XL6 Zeta AT in same colour as Leoshashi's, has run less than what my relative did in 3 years of ownership.

No doubts about this. Apart from the Carens, there is no other comfotable 6 seater in the 15L budget in the market.

17-18 kmpl is more realistic for 80 kmph speeds. Will be higher for a cng version though.

He even posted a video on the WhatsApp status stating that his car is giving 25 Kmpl on the MID screen.

A small cosmetic mod for my Ertiga Zxi front grill. It costs around 6k. Easy to install. The front bumper need to be opened up partially from the top. My car is now Ertiga GTR
