Good to hear that it wasn't anything with the tires or any other component. But, how did this happen in the first place? |
Well, 5 average sized people in the car- doing about 120 - 140 KMPH to Cuddalore. GST on the way to, and ECR on the way back. The road that connects GST with Pondi after Tindivanam is not a great stretch and I was doing 80 - 100, until the car landed kinda hard after crossing a culvert. Nothing seemed to be wrong, we reached Cuddalore.
On the way back, right when exiting Pondi I started hearing scraping noises, panicked. Saw tire fragments cut, but hanging on to the tire and rubbing the arch. Removed all the fragments- and then the sound of the wheel fouling the arch was pretty well audible at each contour of the road...
Hopefully it is fixed now!
Was it a manufacturing defect that caused this.

UPDATE:
Had been to Hyundai on Monday (31st Aug). The wheel arch's inside top was bent towards the tire. This was set right and touched up. Tried the car at a considerably bad/ steep slope within the service center with 6 people (6!!) onboard, and it doesn't foul anymore.
Fingers crossed as of now- my next highway roundtrip should tell... |
Glad that it was the just the wheel well.:thumbs up
btw how did it get bent ?

Dont think so- the wheel arch's metal part was bent towards the tire- cant be a manufacturing defect, something else that I did :(

Not sure yaar. What the Hyundai people guess is that maybe a stone or small piece of wood (you get the idea) revolved around with the tire and hit the arch - but I cant see how the dent is
towards the wheel,
not away. One of those mysteries?
Hopefully the mystery won't be back again. Doing 80-100 in that bad stretch is a bit too much. I had been that way on my bike and I had to keep the speeds lower in the stretch. Surprised that they haven't smoothened the roads as yet.
I have been planning this day for a while now- and so I started off at 11 and headed to Tyrestore. Agenda?
1) Tyre rotation
2) Put the 5th (unsed) alloy instead of the one that fouled (I know, but just a try :) )
3) K&N Stock Replacement filters!
Was there till about 2 or so, and was nice meeting Pras.oct25 too!
After Tyrestore, called up D'BHPian Nitrous seeking help on upgrading her eyes to a 100/90. And headed to GP Road, and got Roots wiring harness & relay, and Philips Rally 100/90 bulbs.
Headed straight to IgNite, and met Raghav. Agenda here:
1) Mobil1 Delvac MX engine oil
2) Upgrading the headlights
3) Washing the car :)
Total spend-
K&N Filter- 4500
Rotation, Balancing and Alignment- 900
Harness, Relay & Bulbs- 850
Mobile1 Delvac MX 5.3 Litre- 1298.50
Monday is going to be yet another day for her- Original Fog Lamps from Hyundai :)
I have had a chance to really ride her as I would like, thanks to traffic, but the car is as smooth as always. There is a change in the engine note due to the K&N, and it sounds more eager...
A Question- those who upgraded to 100/90 in a rocket, how did u wire the harness? There is a sealing cover to the headlight, are u still using it? Or did you bore holes in it, and sealed the holes after passing the wires through them?

Be careful while drilling those covers, if not done properly, water will enter the light assembly while washing/rains.Am facing the same problem with my i20, so wondering whether to upgrade or not. I've seen more than a few i10's with waterlogged headlamps!:Frustrati
Why dont you try Osram Nightbreakers? I replaced the stock on my Getz D with Osrams of same rating (60/55 W). The lighting is superb now and low beam is now enough for most conditions. Drove in rain yesterday night and the lights were enough.

The osram nightbreakers, are better than stock, but not as effective as 100/90 (Obviously!). Its kinda expensive( for a 55/60) too right?

The lighting with the 100/90 is perfect, no probz at all. The headlight's cover gets hot (real hot!), but I guess (and hope) it wont melt off! :)
Can someone tell me the diff. between K&N and green cotton? Phoenix's getz sounds like it has a pretty angry monster residing under the hood. Man the noise that thing makes.
O yeah- there is a marked difference in the way the engine sounds. A bassy note of air getting in is getting added to the diesel clatter. That's normal with K&N?
dude , if you are looking for better vision for night driving , you got try mine..
Those Hella Spot Lights are focussed directly on the road and it gets switched ON only on High Beam . On Low Beam , only the Head lights will be ON. I do have a control switch where i can turn it off or on fully . :D

:)
But what about low beam visibility? The stocks do you justice? What I got now seems be fine- let me take a highway roundabout and let you know!
Howz the read giant, btw?!! :D

Wiring is a breeze agreed , but my friend arent those blocking the air intake to your engine bay , i for one would not want to deprive my engine if even 5% of what its currently getting by installing after market fog light like that.

K&N and green cotton , i hear the air output of green cotton is slightly better than K&N, Peter gave me some reasons for it , actually he recommends the GC Stock replacement filter with the Petes box. What i personally found was that K&N is more widely available , with respect to the availability of the cleaning kits , K&N was better

Yeah , try my headlights after a 1 hrs drive with the 130/110W on high beams .Sometimes me thinks in an urgent situations i can makes dosas on them :Shockked:
And about the dust covers , better put them back on as soon as possible , and dont allow the installers to cut it , cutting it kills the entire purpose of the dust cover and will damage / fade you reflectors in the longs run [experience speaks]
