It does not show much difference under normal driving conditions, but if the road is tad up-hill, and if you are in 4th gear at 1500 RPM, it takes ages to hit the turbo- had to shift down to 3rd and then take it up. I have never noticed this lag at 1500 in 4th while on Shell, even on similar/ same roads. |
.
Thats the business case justification for acquiring a Petes Box / RD ECU :)

The S.Drives behaved pretty well. neoranjit pointed out a mild tire squeal at high speed turnings, though. Also, if the road is wet and if one wheel is going over more water than the other, the steering tends to steer a bit in that wheel's side on its own- this took a bit of getting used to- had to hold on tight to the wheel with both hands while on watery surface
|
.
Well the next step after the squeal is the sideways movement, lateral skid !
Push the car any futher on water and aqua planing will then call the shots. But my friend basic rul in rains , do not use the high speed lane and stick to the right extreme, there is high probability of water logging. Hit these pools at high speeds th effcets wont be good
Finally neoranjit's take on the rocket-
"The engine is definitely a 5 Lakh engine, but the car is not. Interiors and features could have been better...". I have to agree.[/quote]

I couldn't make it to Pondy- was in Bangalore :)
The headlight cover stuff aint done yet- time isn't giving me a chance- lets see if I can do it one of these weekends...

Didn't happen that way- and the squeal was hardly audible. With the windows rolled up, there was a mild whistle. With the windows down, nothing can be heard- thanks to the wind noise...

Aquaplaning- that is what it is!! (Da new D-BHPian of Chennai enlightened me!!) And I guess you meant left extreme- and I gotta agree! I kinda keep in the middle-to-right-extreme nowadays if the road is wet...
Guys, does somebody know what is the configuration of Getz's fogs?I mean is it 9005 or H1 or ?
Is the getz crdi in market now? I cannot find the crdi in the website of getz. Only 1.3 and 1.1 l petrol are mentioned.

I remember reading somewhere that they are H3- not sure though...

Someone had posted that there are a handful of Getz CRDi available- but you need to cry loud and hoarse for the dealer to budge :)
Its been a while since I updated my ownership experience, so here goes. Let me start with my ICEing trip. Here is what I had in mind for ICE:
- A double DIN HU *without* video capabilities - didn't want the empty bay that would be left over by a 1-DIN, and didnt want video because I will be driving all the time - if I ain't seeing it, none else is! :D
- A good component up front
- A pair of coaxials in the back door
- A four channel AMP
I know I would miss on mid / low bass, but I had plans for adding a mono-block and a Sub later on.
After much searching and looking around, I locked on the
Pioneer FH-P8000BT /
Premier FH-P800BT. The primary difference between the two was the ability to switch off the internal AMP in the Premier. The Premier installation et all was useless for me over here in India. I found a pretty good deal for it, and had it shipped to a friend in the US, who was coming down.
The components for the front became Illusion EL6.1. I started off work with an installer in G.P.Road on 2nd October.
First Hiccup - AMP:
D-BHPian Nitrous and I hunted for the revered 75.4, and then for 1004 end Sep 2009 / start of Oct. Neither were within reach - 1004 was out of stock! Decided to have the setup without the AMP for now.
Second Hiccup - HU:
The HU's wiring harness did not get shipped at all, and after some looking around we used the harness from a FH-P6050, which is essentially the same except that it did not have the dimmer connections.
Deal breaker - Installer:
To cut a long story short, I ended up with dirty seats, and messed up AC controls. The way the door panel was cut for the components' tweeter was bleeding. Though I heard good things about this installer, he did not work out for me. Left a real bad taste.
The setup was playing now, but the balance / fader / channels were all messed up. The primary blame for this was the missing harness.
Back home, with an incomplete installation, I was kind of restless. After a few calls decided to head to Bangalore, to meet Satya of Evo.
Evo Experience
Met Satya of Evo on the 3rd of October, and he said he will get me a rear coax for the door, a 4-ch AMP (~100 Watts RMS) from Crunch, a 12" sub with enclosure, and installation done within my budget. I already had JBL power cables and coaxial cables.
The rear coax was filled by Lightening Audio, and the Subwoofer by 12" Hertz Dieci. The workmanship was impeccable, and I had an install within my budget, and one that matches my listening tastes - clear sound, good mid and lows, not so bright.
The total damage added up to 40k+ including the HU and the front compo and what Satya gave me. Had I gone straight to Satya, I might have had a better setup.
The listening experience:
Like most Premier HUs, my FH-P800BT is loaded with features.
What I liked most:
- Decent looking double DIN
- 7-band Graphic EQ
- Bluetooth speaker phone
- Bluetooth music player
- 3 RCA outs
- Built-in iPod control (comes with the iPod control cable). I never use iPods, but when a friend of a relative comes in with one, its just plug-in and play for their fav numbers!
Though it lacks the Auto EQ, Time alignment and Listening position selection that my P8650MP had, I am not complaining.
The front channel of the AMP is currently driving the 4 speakers, and the rear channel is bridged for the AMP. Hence the Lightening Audio coax I have in the rear is kind of overshadowing the Illusion Audio EL6.1. Also, I have come to feel that I need to do away with the porting in my Sub enclosure to have a tighter bass.
Future upgrades:
A good monoblock or a bridged 2 channel AMP for the Subwoofer. This will free up the 4 channels of the Crunch AMP and I can tune the rear channels so that they wont shadow over the Illusion 6.1s.
Bottom Line:
The setup is only as good as how well it is tuned. You have to listen to mine to know how good a tuner Satya is. I have very modest equipment that are excellently tuned to cater to *my* listening requirements. Thanks, Satya!
Note: Pardon the poor quality of the images - and those who are planning on a Nokia E72, here is the image quality for you lol:
I was off to Bangalore (yet again!) on the last week of October 2010 for my best friend's wedding and reception. The car touched the 10k mark on the way back.
... one more for the 5th digit!!
Yippie!! 10k in 4 months...
After I got back, gave her in for the 2nd service. In addition to the usual Engine oil change with oil filter and fuel filter change, I also wanted the interior cleaning to be done. The total came up to 2175 - and that is because the fuel filter was not changed. It was not in stock, and I was told I can have it changed at a later date.
I did not change the air filter because the stock air filter was hardly used - I was having a K&N stock replacement filter primarily, and put the stocl replacement filter only when I give her in for service.
Though I usually go with Mobile 1 Delvac MX, I went with whatever Hyundai A.S.S pours in. And this is because-
I will be travelling out of the country for the next several months!
I was contemplating having the car on stands in my garage, and read up on that a lot. One particular website that I found useful:
Laying up your car : Not using your car for a long time - how to prepare your car for storage - The AA
I finally gave it to my add to use as an additional car. I did not expect my running, though was worried about how it will be put to use. Everyone I can think of who might be driving the car (including my dad) were Petrol car drivers for several years.
There is only so much you can do, so I flew out to Republika ng Pilipinas on the first of November. The car was fresh out of the 2nd Service, with about 10500 on the clock.
When I got back in mid Jan, the rocket had clocked about 13500 KM - 3000 in three months, not bad.
I had given the car with the stock paper filter to my dad, so first thing was switching back to K&N. There was also a dent with scratches in the rear left door - car got nicked at the pillar in our gate when my sis was taking it out, and a few minor pricks-the-heart stuff. Though I had told my dad repeatedly that none else except him should touch the car, I was sure everyone who comes in will take a test. The only good thing about that- all had very good things to say:
Drives like a petrol. Insane power. Highway rides are a pleasure. Diesel clatter is hardly audible inside. AC is chilling. Very spacious. Long list...
Manila has a place called Banawue that has a lot of car mod stuff available. While I was not interested in performance mods, I was looking for HIDs and wanted to check out what else is available. Thanks to good friend and colleague Arvin, I ended up with
- 8000k HID kit with projectors and CFL "angel eyes" bezel
- Mugen pedals
- Momo gear knob
All these worked out to about 11k in INR.
Though the HID kit was a cheap, Chinese stuff, I wanted to check them out before putting in a lot of money in HIDing. Being 8000k, the light was white. The kit came with detailed instructions, all required wiring, relays, ballasts, and even a couple of tubes of glue to seal the headlamp after opening it up for installing this kit.
While I am happy with this kit, my grouse is that I am not getting the lights focused properly. When I say focused properly, what I mean is - when the lights are in low beam, the HID's shutter to cut off the light is not really straight. I haven't gotten to try and fix it yet.
The Mugen pedals are lovely. The Momo gear knobs are not :D
Actually the gear knobs are good, but not for my car. The reverse gear being where it is means I have to lift the shifter lock before engaging reverse, and hence the replacement gear knob will leave a gap. After having it for a few days, I removed it.
A few photos of the 'eyes...
and the pedals...

The car touched 15k by mid-February. And the round of regular maintenance routine I do every 5k on the clock started - wheel rotation, alignment, balancing, oil change, et all.
A 1000 clicks to go...
... and I missed clicking the 15k mark! :Frustrati Here is what I managed.
For the shoes...
Took her to Tyre Store for rotation, alignment and balancing. I wanted to do it every 5k KM, but missed it for the 10k round. And as the lug nuts have started rusting up, wanted to have them changed. All worked out to 1750 bucks. I wanted to have the K&N filter cleaned, but as it was a Sunday that did not happen.
Takin' a dip
Deepak of Tyre Store suggested I have the car's underbody too washed, as the car had been through the mucky rains of Madras. Took her on the way back to the HP petrol station under the Gemini flyover here, and got her thoroughly washed and cleaned. They first vaccum the seats, blow out the floor and the cubby holes, and then lift the car up and spary it clean. And then a round of soap wash for the body, drying, and a anti-corrosive spray where it matters. I think I paid about 300 bucks (not sure) for all this.
Back to pristine shape
I wanted to have all the nicks and dents removed, so took her to Raghav of Ignite early March. As the car has crossed 15k, also wanted the engine oil to be changed. The bill worked up to 9k, and the car was back to spotless shape. I had purposefully left the rear bumper from being touched - it already suffered a
rear-ending by an Innova earlier, and had a few odd nicks and scratches. Will have to get it changed later.
Coolers (again!)
The 3M RE50 I had on the 4 doors and rear, though was a good sunfilm, was earning my disapproval. It is not even March mid, and the AC's efficiency is noticeably lower. And, though not a major gripe, I felt I could do with some privacy. So decided to go for darker tints. After much comparisons, I decided to go for the darkest of the CS Series - the CS 5 for the 4 doors and rear, and CR70 for the front windshield. The cooling is killing now. On evenings I cannot tolerate the AC's chill in blower level #1 with 30% cooling on the thermostat for more than 30 min - have to switch off the compressor. On a mid day, I still cannot go up to blower level #2. In fact I have the vents focussed away from me all the times.
With the new sun-film...
16k is up already...
...and so is this :D
About a week or two after the water wash, I started getting scratching sounds from the rear-right shocks at times. Took her to KUN Hyundai Kottivakkam, and they tried on a shock from another Getz - no sound. So an intent was raised for replacing my shock absorber. After refitting my old shock on the same day, the sound stopped. So I told them to hold on the replacement and let me check. Sure enough, the sound was back in a week, so off I got for replacing. Funny enough, after replacing, I got the same sound during the test drive. After a few more check up n tightenings, the sound has disappeared, and has not come back for more than 2 weeks now. So not sure if the actual culprit was the strut or something else. I also hear a muffled thud from the rear struts when I go over a rough patch, it seems to have disappeared atleast in the new strut. Have to check for a some time more to confirm that, and then have the other strut too changed.
The remote lock from Piranha started acting up. If I lock from the driver side, all doors lock. If I unlock using the driver side or using the remote, all was well. If I used the remote to lock, only the driver side locks. I had to lift the driver side door opener to lock the other doors :D This was fixed in warranty by Piranha. The service guy who visited me told me that I will not be able to program the system to automatically lock the car after parking it for a x seconds. I was disappointed, the system I had in my Indica in 2005 was very similar to this, and I was able to ask the technician to program it like that.
Wish list:
- Mono block for the Sub
- Better number plates - the stock plates suck big time! Both the front and the rear plates are of the same shape n size!!!
- Headlight mods - 4500k or 6000k HID, projectors from BMW or Skoda, Angel eyes bezel, and matching HID fog lamps.
- Rear spoiler
- Leather / part leather seats, door inserts, gear knob and steering
The 195/55 R15 Yoko S.Drives are admirably good, esp on the braking aspects. But they are hard tyres. My next tires will be softer tires - will be looking at A.Drives or XM1+ when the time comes - which might be a while to come, looking at the tyre threads :)
Hey machi , back again with your updates . Nice .
And you have fitted angel eyes too . Great. Would like to see the pictures taken at night . How much did the projector kit costed? Bought them in chennai GP road?
WOW... what a long long update.
Loved your HU and good description of your experiences. Was anything done to fix the ruined cut for the component? I too am thinking of a double DIN HU, but with video capabilities. But need to accumulate cash for that + alloys.
How come you are clocking so much kms? What do you work as that requires so much travelling? i would loved such a job.

Thanks mams.. I got the projector from Manila. works out to about 7 - 8k in INR. Would get some night time shots later (tonight or tomorrow).

Thanks Krish. The ruined cut for the components remain, and the component was wrapped in insulation tape - don't think anything else can be done :Frustrati
Beware of being bitten by the ICE bug, you will keep spending / upgrading!! :D
My work place is just 7 KM, but thanks to weekend drives on the ECR or trips Bangalore often, I end up clocking 2000 ~ 3000 every month. Also, as the car is in lease, the company pays a specific amount per month for fuel. If I do not submit bills up to my limit, I will be taxed end of financial cycle - so that works as a good incentive to keep driving!
The pedals are insane !!! just love them !!

Will get a better quality pic - the pics I have posted do no justice to them!!
Please check with the Hyundai guys there on three points.
1) Can the ABS system in Getz 1.3 GLX be fitted onto the Crdi?
2) Rear disk brakes from i20 or erstwhile Verna ABS model
3) Rear glass defogger and wiper.
I asked the bangalore service station guys and recieved a firm NO. I'm though not so convinced, coz if one getz can have it, then the other surely can. There will be some additional work to be done as well, but I think its well worth it.
