Re: Looking at buying a BMW X1 - Need advice

Hi Bhpians,

Looking at used X1s in the market and confused between petrol and diesel models.
Drove both at a used car dealer and impressions are given below.

Diesel - X1 sdrive 20d
- 190 bhp and 400Nm
- Reliable Aisin 8 speed torque converter gearbox
- old style gear lever for pre 2020 models

Driving impression: Diesel felt heavier to drive and a bit linear initially. But after around 2000rpm there is a rush of torque which seems to be never ending. Fun to drive and handles well for a cross over.

Petrol - X1 sdrive 20i
- 190 bhp and 280Nm (Torque is lesser than VW/Skoda 2.0 TSI engine)
- 7 speed DCT gearbox
- BMW joystick gear lever even for pre 2020 models

Driving impression: Petrol car itself felt very agile and light. This is punchy from start itself and as soon as you press accelerator, you are pushed back to the seat. Initial and midrange is really good, but top end seems to be flat. Fun to drive in the city but not sure at higher speeds.

I was biased towards diesel and was checking 2018 and 2019 models as after BS6 (2020), there is additional Adblue and DPF.

But with recent statements from Nitin Gadkari and general aversion towards diesel, thinking whether to check petrol models instead.

Please suggest whether i should go for diesel or petrol.
