Re: Pimped Polo 1.6 with race exhaust + ECU

Hey everyone!!

Sorry to bump this thread but I am sure my query does not warranty for a new one.

I have a 2011 VW Polo 1.6 Naturally Aspirate Petrol which is 105 bhp & 153 Nm torque as stock. I was looking at a performance upgrade but without any physical upgrades (exhaust, air filters, suspension, etc) and had contacted Pete for the same. I am given to understand that an ECU remap can be done but gain will be only around 10 bhp to 12 bhp and torque of 15 Nm to 20 Nm. This will cost me around 20k. Is this a worthy upgrade?

Worthy or not, that is for you to decide Epic. But here are my thoughts:
  • For a N.A engine, remap alone will not give you any noticeable performance improvement, though it may appear good theoretically.
  • Even if Pete does manage to deliver the projected figures, it would still be lower than or almost equal to a stick 1.2 TSI. But the latter has that DSG magic, so you may feel dejected if you got smoked by one after spending 20 big ones.
  • Most importantly, the purpose of your upgrade is what matters. If its for some performance runs, then this may well be negligible.
Experts can pitch in here.

The thing is that I love this car! It has crossed 06 years and I still enjoy driving it as much as my other car (2015 Jetta TDI DSG) every single day. I was on the verge of selling it and upgrade to a GT TSI or a Vento TSI but I some how did not like the feel of the 1.2 in the GT TSI(maybe it's the feel of the 1.2 engine) and so decided to stick with this. I am also in the process of getting some accessory retrofits done including 16” rims. So the purpose of this upgrade is simply to enhance the driving pleasure.

Looking at the bump of just 10 bhp & 15 Nm torque (apparently the GT TSI gets a bump of 25 bhp & 50 Nm torque with the same remap), I do not find it worth spending 20k for it.

When did you check with Petes? I believe it's just 14.25k now (Festive offer). They have extended till this month end.

I had written to Pete's on 07th Sept regarding my requirement and I was happy to see a prompt reply (which one rarely gets) saying that I can expect a bump of 10 bhp to 12 bhp in power and around 10 Nm to 15 Nm of torque and to contact their Mumbai representative Mr. Rishad to take it further. They quoted Rs. 14,250 for the same as their special offer.

Called Mr. Rishad in Mumbai and explained to him my requirement of a want for increase in power without any 'physical' change done to the car. Mr. Rishad seems a bit cocky and laughingly said that how do you expect an increase in power and not want me to change anything in the car. I had to explain to him again what I meant and he told me that I would get a bump of 25 bhp and 50 Nm torque. I was happy but at the same time confused with the drastic difference in figures given by Pete and him. Contacted Pete again to clarify and they apologized saying that Mr. Rishad may have 'assumed' it was a 1.6 turbo. I realized that Mr. Rishad is one of those who listen less and talk more He also mentioned that the special offer is only till 08th Sept and post that it will be 20k. So I dropped the idea.

Pete's team is coming to Pune next week. You can drive in stock map to Pune and drive back to Mumbai post remap

This is so weird!! Surprising they did not mention about the extension. But I don't think it is worth doing a remap (regardless of the cost) for just a 10 bhp increase in power; let alone driving to Pune
